Overview

The AIRCAT Model 1994 is a 1" x 8" "SUPER DUTY" Impact Wrench, designed for heavy-duty fastening applications. This pneumatic tool is accompanied by a comprehensive manual that outlines its operation, maintenance, and safety guidelines.

Function Description:

The AIRCAT 1994 is a powerful impact wrench used for tightening and loosening threaded fasteners, primarily nuts. It operates by delivering rapid, high-torque impacts to the fastener, making it suitable for applications where significant force is required. The tool is designed to provide efficient and reliable performance in demanding environments.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model: 1994
  • Drive Size: 1" x 8" Square Drive
  • Free Speed: 4,500 RPM
  • Bolt Capacity: 1-1/4 inches
  • Impacts Per Minute: 1,100
  • Max. Torque (at 90 psi): 2,300 ft-lb
  • Weight: 35.0 lbs.
  • Length: 26.0 inches
  • Air Consumption: 16 CFM
  • Recommended Hose Size: 1/2 inch
  • Air Inlet: 3/8 NPT

The tool operates on compressed air, with a recommended air pressure of 90 PSI at the tool while running free. Higher pressures are cautioned against as they can shorten tool life due to increased wear and potentially create hazardous conditions, voiding the warranty. The air inlet is a standard 1/4" NPT American Thread.

Usage Features:

The AIRCAT 1994 is designed for robust use, but specific operational guidelines must be followed to ensure safety and optimal performance.

  • Safety First: Operators must always wear impact-resistant eye protection, hearing protection, and safety gloves. The manual emphasizes reading and understanding all safety instructions before installation, operation, repair, or maintenance.
  • Socket Usage: Only impact sockets and accessories designated "FOR USE WITH IMPACT WRENCHES" should be used. Hand tool sockets are prone to breaking under impact, creating a hazard. For heavy impact sockets (3/4" drive anvils or larger), a socket retaining ring and pin are required to prevent the socket from falling off. Sockets, retainers, and drives should be regularly checked for wear or damage and replaced as needed.
  • Connection and Air Supply: The tool requires a clean and dry air supply. Water in the air line can damage the tool, necessitating daily draining of the air tank and weekly cleaning of the air inlet filter screen. An in-line filter-regulator-lubricator is recommended to extend tool life and maintain consistent operation. Line pressure may need to be increased for unusually long air hoses (over 25 feet).
  • Torque Control: This impact wrench should never be used to set torque. A separate torque wrench is required for precise torque settings. For removing nuts, the regulator should be set to maximum. For installing nuts, it should be set to minimum to medium, avoiding overtightening.
  • Ergonomics and Posture: Operators should maintain a balanced body position with secure footing and avoid awkward postures. Changing posture during extended tasks can help prevent discomfort. If symptoms like persistent discomfort, pain, tingling, or numbness occur, medical advice should be sought.
  • Accessory Handling: The tool should be disconnected from the energy supply before changing accessories. Sockets and accessories should not be touched during impacting to prevent cuts, burns, or vibration injuries. Only manufacturer-recommended sizes and types of accessories and consumables should be used. Loose attachments can cause serious injury.
  • Hazard Awareness: Warnings are provided against projectile hazards (failure of work piece, accessories, or tool), entanglement hazards (neckwear, hair, gloves), operating hazards (crushing, impacts, cuts, abrasions, heat), repetitive motion hazards, workplace hazards (slips, trips, falls, hidden utilities, explosive atmospheres, electrical contact), dust and fume hazards, noise hazards, and vibration hazards. Specific controls and protective measures are detailed for each.

Maintenance Features:

Proper maintenance is crucial for the longevity and performance of the AIRCAT 1994.

  • Air Quality: Unclean air, moisture, or restrictions in air pipes can lead to power loss or erratic action. Regular draining of the air tank and cleaning of the air inlet filter screen are essential.
  • Lubrication: An in-line filter-regulator-lubricator is recommended. The in-line lubricator should be regularly checked and filled with air tool oil. Excessive oil should be avoided. To properly set the lubricator, a light oil stain should collect on a piece of paper held next to the exhaust ports after about 30 seconds of throttle operation.
  • Storage Lubrication: For extended storage, the tool should be generously lubricated through the air inlet and run for approximately 30 seconds to distribute the oil evenly. Store the tool in a clean and dry environment.
  • Troubleshooting: Loss of power or erratic action can be caused by reduced compressor output, excessive drain on the air line, moisture, or restrictions in air pipes. Grit or gum deposits can also cut power. These issues can often be corrected by cleaning the air strainer and flushing the tool with gum solvent oil or a mixture of SAE#10 oil and kerosene.
  • Repair: For tools within the warranty period, they should be sent directly to an Authorized Service Center. For out-of-warranty tools, operators can disassemble, clean, replace worn or damaged parts, and re-lubricate, or take the tool to any air tool service center.
  • Recommended Lubricants: Air tool oil or any other high-grade turbine oil containing moisture absorbent, rust inhibitors, metal wetting agents, and an EP (extreme pressure) additive are recommended.
  • Warranty: The AIRCAT 1994 comes with a 2-year warranty covering defects in material and workmanship from the date of purchase. This warranty applies only to the tool itself, not to attached accessories or consumables. Repairs due to normal wear and tear, abuse, misuse, modification, or unauthorized repair attempts are not covered. Tools requiring warranty service should be returned freight prepaid to an Authorized Service Center, including proof of purchase and a description of the defect. Tune-Up and Head Kits are available for all AIRCAT pneumatic impact wrenches and ratchets.
