The AirClean® Systems PowderSafe™ Type C enclosure is a ductless balance enclosure designed for handling powders and particulates. It incorporates AirSafe™ filtration technology and HEPA filters, providing effective operator protection from potential exposure to toxic powders, particulate, chemical fumes, and vapors. The AirSafe™ automatic safety controller continuously monitors airflow and filter conditions, ensuring safe operation.
Function Description:
The AirClean® Systems PowderSafe™ Type C enclosure is a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtered workstation that provides a safe environment for weighing and manipulating powders and other particulate materials. Its primary function is to protect the operator from hazardous airborne contaminants by containing them within the enclosure and filtering the air before it is recirculated or exhausted. The enclosure utilizes a multi-stage filtration system, including a pre-filter, a bonded carbon filter, and a HEPA filter, to capture a wide range of particulates and chemical fumes. The AirSafe™ Automatic Safety Controller is a key feature, providing continuous monitoring of critical operating parameters such as airflow, filter monitoring, and gas detection. This controller ensures that the enclosure operates within safe limits and alerts the user to any potential issues, thereby enhancing operator safety. The enclosure's design promotes horizontal laminar airflow, which helps to sweep airborne contaminants away from the operator and towards the filtration system.

Usage Features:
- AirSafe™ Automatic Safety Controller: This controller provides operator protection 24 hours a day. It incorporates a combination of airflow monitoring, filter monitoring, and gas detection. The controller allows the user to breathe easier knowing their safety is being constantly monitored. It features a user-friendly interface with MODE, SELECT, and SET buttons for programming and adjustment.
- Programming Keys: The controller allows the operator to move between different program screens (MODE), select movement within each program screen (SELECT), and adjust user-definable settings such as face velocity, lab event timer, time/date, and gas detection (SET).
- Quick Keys: Dedicated buttons for BLOWER (default screen continuously displays face velocity), PUMP (inactive key for enclosure), LIGHT (one touch to enable fluorescent light), TIMER (user definable lab event timer), and AUX (inactive key for enclosure).
- Alarm System: The controller includes an audible alarm that keeps the visible alarm armed. It provides alerts for various conditions:
- ALARM → CHG FILT: Indicates a chronological timed alarm that turns on about two weeks before the HEPA filter should be changed.
- ALARM → FILT BP: The BP alarm comes on when either the prefilter or the HEPA filter becomes dirty and the enclosure requires immediate filter maintenance.
- ALARM → LOW AIRFLOW: The low airflow alarm comes on when the face velocity drops below the pre-set limit.
- ALARM → GAS DET: The gas detector alarm comes on when breakthrough is detected (for models with a bonded carbon filter).
- Installation and Assembly: The enclosure should be installed near doors, windows, or air conditioning/heating/ventilation systems. Air must be allowed to circulate freely around the enclosure. It should be placed at least 3" below the top of the enclosure and any overhead cabinets or shelving for adequate exhausting. The manual provides instructions for assembling the mobile cart (if ordered), placing the enclosure on the cart or counter, connecting the prefilter for inspection, connecting the power cord, and activating the main power.
- Operating Instructions: Specific instructions are provided for containment of powders and particulate, as well as fumes and vapors. Users are advised to ensure that the installation and assembly instructions have been completed. Before use, it's crucial to ensure that no incompatible substance is within the enclosure. The enclosure should be run for 5 minutes before beginning any application. Operators should work within the enclosure, keeping the front sash down and performing procedures in the center to rear of the enclosure.
Maintenance Features:
- Pre-filters: Should be checked each month. Replacement is required when discoloration of the prefilter occurs or when the low airflow alarm comes on. The manual provides detailed instructions for pre-filter check and replacement, including steps for removing the old filter, cleaning the pre-filter grid, and installing new filters.
- HEPA Filters: The HEPA filter must be changed every two years or whenever it is clogged. The frequency with which the filter must be changed depends upon usage, OSHA and the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) have published guidelines for Threshold Limit Values (TLV's) of exposure to chemicals and particulate. The manual provides detailed instructions for removing the spent ACFHEPA filter and installing a new ACFHEPA filter.
- Bonded Carbon Filters (Optional): For carbon enclosures only, a solid state hydrocarbon detector warns the user of filter breakthrough. Alarms are audible and visible.
- General Maintenance: The manual emphasizes the importance of following instructions to assure better protection of the operator and the environment, and extends the life of the enclosure and filter. Correct use of the enclosure is the responsibility of the operator.
- Check the display screen to assure that the enclosure is functioning properly: If the Low Airflow Alarm is not activated, proceed to use the enclosure. If the Low Airflow Alarm is activated, contact AirClean® Systems Technical Support Department.
- Warranty: AirClean® Systems provides a warranty on all parts and factory workmanship. The warranty includes areas of defective material and workmanship, provided such defect results from normal and proper use of the equipment. The warranty for all AirClean® Systems products will expire one year from date of shipment from AirClean® Systems, except for DrySafe™ Forensic Evidence Drying Cabinets and CyanoSafe™ Cyanoacrylate Fuming Chambers, which carry a two-year warranty from date of shipment. This limited warranty covers parts and labor, but not transportation and insurance charges.
