Do you have a question about the Airspan Mimosa A5x and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Mimosa A5x, by Airspan, is a flexible PTMP (Point-to-Multipoint) Access Point featuring GPS/GLONASS Spectrum Reuse Sync. This device requires unlocking prior to use, with instructions available at mimosa.co/start.

Function Description:

The A5x serves as a central access point in a wireless network, designed for Point-to-Multipoint applications. Its core function is to provide wireless connectivity to multiple client devices within a given area. The inclusion of GPS/GLONASS Spectrum Reuse Sync is a key feature, enabling efficient and coordinated use of spectrum, which is crucial for maximizing network capacity and minimizing interference in dense deployments. This synchronization allows multiple A5x devices to operate in close proximity without significant self-interference, thereby improving overall network performance and scalability.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Antenna Compatibility: Requires a dual-polarization access point category antenna. The antenna must be cross-polarized. This specification is critical for achieving optimal performance, as dual polarization allows for better signal integrity and capacity by utilizing both horizontal and vertical polarizations.
  • Grounding: Requires a minimum 10 AWG (5.26 mm²) ground cable with a pre-terminated ring terminal. The ground wire should be no longer than 1 meter in length. Proper grounding is essential for safety and protection against electrical surges, including lightning. Failure to ground the device in compliance with local and national electrical codes could lead to serious injury or death.
  • Power Input: Supports Passive Gigabit Power over Ethernet (PoE) input, supplying between 24-57 VDC. This flexibility in voltage input allows for compatibility with a range of PoE injectors, simplifying deployment. Connecting to any power source that does not meet the specified voltage, frequency, and current requirements may damage the power supply or product and pose a fire hazard.
  • Ethernet Cable: Requires an outdoor shielded CAT6/6A Ethernet cable. Shielded cabling is vital for outdoor installations to protect against electromagnetic interference (EMI) and to ensure proper ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) protection. Failure to use minimum grade CAT6/6A shielded Ethernet cable or violation of local and national electric code grounding and premises ESD protection requirements for outdoor installations will void the product warranty.
  • Connectors: Utilizes two (2) RP-SMA male type jumper cables for antenna connection. These connectors are standard for many wireless devices, ensuring broad compatibility with various antennas.
  • Operating Temperature: The maximum ambient operating temperature is +55°C. The device should not be operated above this temperature to prevent damage and ensure reliable performance.

Usage Features:

  • Mounting: The A5x can be mounted to a pole using a hose clamp style pole strap, inserted through a slot in the mounting bracket. Alternatively, it can be attached to any antenna that supports integrated mounting clips. This dual mounting option provides flexibility for various installation scenarios.
  • Antenna Connection: Two RP-SMA male type jumper cables connect the A5x to the chosen antenna. It is recommended to optionally seal these connectors with mastic tape for weatherproofing, which is crucial for outdoor deployments to protect against moisture ingress and corrosion.
  • Ethernet Connection: A shielded CAT6/6A Ethernet cable is connected to the device by inserting it through M25 cable sealing gland components, which are then tightened. This sealing gland ensures a watertight and dust-tight seal for the Ethernet cable entry point, protecting the internal electronics from environmental elements. The other end of the Ethernet cable connects to a passive PoE power supply.
  • Unlock Requirement: The device requires unlocking prior to use. This might involve a software activation process or a license key, ensuring compliance with regional regulations or specific service provider requirements. Instructions for unlocking are provided on the Mimosa website.
  • Spectrum Reuse Sync: The integrated GPS/GLONASS Spectrum Reuse Sync feature allows for coordinated spectrum use, which is particularly beneficial in dense wireless environments. This synchronization helps to minimize interference between co-located access points, improving overall network capacity and reliability.

Maintenance Features:

  • Weatherproofing: The recommendation to seal antenna connectors with mastic tape and the use of an M25 cable sealing gland for the Ethernet cable highlight the importance of weatherproofing for outdoor installations. This proactive measure helps prevent water ingress and corrosion, extending the device's lifespan and maintaining performance.
  • Grounding: The explicit requirement for proper grounding is a critical maintenance and safety feature. Regular inspection of the grounding connection ensures continued protection against electrical hazards.
  • No End User Serviceable Parts: The manual states that there are no End User serviceable parts inside the equipment. This implies that any internal issues or repairs should be handled by qualified technicians or returned to Airspan/Mimosa for service, preventing unauthorized tampering that could void the warranty or cause further damage.
  • Warranty Information: Mimosa products are warranted against defects in material and workmanship for a period of either twelve (12) months from the date of activation or thirty-six (36) months from the original date of shipment, whichever is earlier. The warranty process involves returning defective products in accordance with the Return Material Authorization (RMA) processes. This provides a structured approach for addressing hardware failures.
  • Limitation of Warranty: The warranty is invalidated if the product is altered or tampered with, including external modifications (painting, labeling), modifications with third-party hardware/firmware, abnormal physical/electric stress (lightning strikes, negligence), incorrect installation (mounting, grounding, cabling, power connection), or failure induced by connected third-party products. This emphasizes the importance of adhering to installation guidelines and using approved accessories to maintain warranty coverage.
  • Software/Firmware Updates: While not explicitly detailed as a maintenance feature, the mention of "Modifications of the product with third party hardware, firmware, and/or software" as a warranty invalidation suggests that official firmware updates provided by Airspan/Mimosa are expected for proper operation and maintenance.
  • Support Resources: Instructions, videos, and help can be found at mimosa.co/support, providing a valuable resource for troubleshooting and maintenance guidance. This online support portal is a key feature for users to resolve issues and understand device operation.
