It could be due to dirt or foreign bodies between the friction lining and the trailer hitch ball, in which case you should clean the trailer hitch ball. Another cause could be a coated trailer hitch ball, and the solution is to remove the coating. Lastly, it might be that a removable trailer hitch ball has too much play in the locking mechanism, and you should visit a specialist workshop.
