The Aladdin Blue Flame Heater, Model 37, is a domestic kerosene heater designed for safe and efficient heating, manufactured in accordance with British Oil Heater Regulations 1966, British Standard 3300:1974, and other relevant national and international safety standards. It incorporates an extinguisher device that activates if the heater is accidentally knocked over, enhancing user safety.
Function Description:
The Aladdin Blue Flame Heater operates by burning premium grade paraffin (domestic kerosene) to produce heat. The design emphasizes a "blue flame" for optimal combustion, indicating a clean and efficient burn. The heater is equipped with a wick mechanism that draws fuel from the tank to the burner. A flame spreader ensures even distribution of the flame, and a chimney directs the heat upwards. The heater's primary function is to provide warmth in indoor spaces, with a strong emphasis on proper ventilation to ensure adequate oxygen supply for both the heater and occupants.
Important Technical Specifications:
- Heat Output: Ranges from 5,870 to 9,320 B.Th.U's per hour, or 1,470 to 2,330 Kilogram Calories per hour. This translates to approximately 13/4 to 23/4 kilowatts.
- Fuel Consumption: 25-16 hours per Imperial gallon.
- Approximate Capacity: 1 Imperial gallon (4.5 litres).
- Fuel Type: Only premium grade paraffin (domestic kerosene) conforming to British Standard 2869C1 should be used. The manual explicitly warns against using petrol or power kerosene, highlighting the danger.
- Extinguisher Device: Automatically puts out the flame if the heater is knocked over.
- Oil Gauge (P.199916): Designed to register "full" when the tank is approximately 80% full as a precaution against over-filling.
- Wick (P.169901): A crucial component for fuel delivery and flame control.
- Filler Cap/Air Valve (P.169902): Essential for proper heater functioning; a small air hole in the cap must remain clear.
Usage Features:
- Unpacking: All packing materials must be removed before lighting.
- Extinguisher Device Check: Before filling, the extinguisher device should be checked by pressing the resetting lever and then rocking the heater to ensure the sensing weight falls and releases the extinguisher. The carrying handle must be kept down during operation to prevent overheating.
- Filling: The tank (P.169917) holds one Imperial gallon. Only premium grade paraffin (BS 2869C1) should be used. The filler cap/air valve (P.169902) must be handled carefully, and its air hole kept clear. The oil gauge (P.199916) indicates full at 80% capacity to prevent overfilling.
- Lighting: Before lighting, the wick should be turned down, and the flame spreader (P.329900) checked for proper seating. The wick is then raised until near the top of the burner, and the flame is lit. The resetting lever should be held down while lighting. The wick winder (P.169901) is used to adjust the flame.
- The Safe Blue Flame: The indicator (CN) on the heater shows the flame colour. A clear blue flame is ideal. Yellow flames, or flames that are too high or too low, indicate improper burning and potential smoke. The wick should be adjusted to achieve a clear blue flame, raising it until the yellow edge disappears.
- Leaving the Heater: Simple precautions should be taken when leaving the heater unattended, such as ensuring it is on a level surface and away from draughts and children.
- Extinguishing: The wick should be turned right down to extinguish the flame. It is crucial to ensure the flame is completely out, as a low yellow flame can overheat the burner and cause smoking.
- Ventilation: Adequate ventilation is paramount. Rooms should have an unblocked flue or substantial air inlet at floor level, with a fanlight or window slightly open. This is especially important if the heater is used in a room where someone is sleeping. The heater should never be used in completely sealed rooms.
- Draught Excluder (P.160803): Must be fitted firmly into the underside of the tank.
Maintenance Features:
- Wick Cleaning (P.159904): A clean wick is essential for a good flame. The wick should be cleaned after approximately 50 hours of use. This involves removing the flame spreader (P.329900), turning the wick down, placing the wick cleaner (P.159904) on top of the burner, and slowly turning the wick up while rotating the cleaner clockwise with gentle downward pressure. This process removes black carbon. Scissors or razor blades should never be used on the wick.
- Cleaning the Heater: Regular cleaning is necessary to prevent smells and potential hazards. This includes wiping off spilt paraffin, removing dust, fluff, and carbon from air holes. The flame spreader (P.329900) and burner basket (P.151000) should be removed for cleaning. The gallery at the bottom of the chimney also needs cleaning. Hot soapy water can be used, but abrasives should be avoided, and no water should get into the tank or on the wick.
- Reshaping Wick: If the wick burns unevenly or produces a yellow flame, it needs reshaping. The heater should be allowed to burn completely out in a well-ventilated area, and then the wick cleaner used.
- Fitting New Wick: Wicks have a long lifespan, but eventually need replacement. Forcing the wick winder when the wick can no longer be turned up high enough will cause damage. To replace, remove the flame spreader (P.329900) and burner basket (P.151000). Turn the wick up until the cog is free, then pull the wick and carrier (P.379935) out. Disengage the old wick from the carrier. A new wick should be carefully inserted into the carrier, ensuring the teeth engage with the slots. The assembly is then drawn over the centre tube of the tank, aligning the rack with the winder cog, and pushed down until engaged. The wick should be turned down, ensuring the tape inside doesn't catch on the centre tube. After replacing the burner basket and flame spreader, the tank should be refilled, and the wick allowed to soak for at least an hour before lighting.
- General Maintenance: Any damaged or worn parts should be immediately replaced with genuine Aladdin spares. The tank should be rinsed with clean paraffin (kerosene) once a year, and a new wick fitted. If the "SAFE BLUE FLAME" cannot be achieved or if there are any difficulties, the heater should be taken to an Aladdin stockist. Never use a heater that is not working properly.
Safety Precautions:
- Always place the heater on a level surface with the handle in the down position when alight.
- Use only premium grade paraffin (BS 2869 grade C1); never use petrol or other fuels.
- Ensure the flame is blue.
- Keep all parts clean, especially the burner and chimney.
- Ensure the room is well ventilated; avoid draughts.
- Do not fill or carry the heater while it is alight.
- Do not allow clothes or articles near the heater, and do not place it where it can be knocked over.
- Replace damaged parts immediately with genuine Aladdin spares.
- Guard the heater if children are in the room alone.
- Do not add salt or anything else to the fuel.
- The heater's feet have screw holes for fixing.
