Do you have a question about the ALERTON VisualLogic BACtalk UL 864 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The VLC-1188-S is a high-performance, DDC-driven field controller designed for controlling building mechanical and electrical equipment. This includes central plant systems, air handling units, fire control dampers, clean rooms, fume hoods, and large terminal units. All DDC program data is stored in non-volatile EEPROM.

Technical Specifications:

  • Communication: Operates on a BACnet MS/TP LAN at speeds up to 76.8 Kbps.
  • Inputs: 11 general-purpose analog or digital inputs.
  • Outputs: 8 binary outputs and 8 analog outputs.
  • Power Supply: Requires a UL Listed Class 2 transformer, 24VAC at 5VA minimum, 65VA maximum standby power, half-wave (grounded).
  • Wiring:
    • Power Supply and Ground (including cable shield drain): Use unshielded 18AWG minimum @ 12ft (3.5m) maximum. Longer runs are achievable; refer to "Power supply wire selection" in "VLC Installation & Wiring Guide."
    • Inputs (resistive, dry contact, 4-20mA, 0-10VDC, 0-5VDC, solid-state switch, pulse-type): Use shielded 18 to 22 AWG @ 1000 ft (300m) maximum.
    • Outputs (binary, analog): Use unshielded 18 AWG @ 1000 ft (300m) maximum. Ground the BO return to the transformer or panel ground, not to the GND terminals on the VLC.
    • MS/TP: Use shielded 22 AWG, 2 conductor @ 4000 ft (1200m) maximum. Characteristic impedance = 120 Ohm, capacitance between conductors = 30 pF/ft (100pF/m), and capacitance between conductors & field = 60 pF/ft (200 pF/m). Air cable #W221P-2544 or equivalent is recommended. Ideally, ground the cable drain nearest the segment midpoint.
  • Protection: Offers short circuit protection on all binary outputs.

Usage Features:

  • Device Connectivity: Connects to UL Listed smoke control devices such as air handling units, dampers, fans, actuators, and proof sensors.
  • Instruction Execution: Receives instructions from the BTI-S (BACtalk Integrator for smoke control applications) to open/close dampers, turn fans on/off, etc. These instructions can be part of the smoke control DDC programming in the BTI-S or result from manual overrides at the Firefighters' Smoke Control Station (FSCS).
  • End-Process Verification: Monitors end-of-travel and flow proof sensors, sending data back to the BTI-S.
  • Alarm Generation: If a smoke control device malfunctions under emergency conditions, the BTI-S initiates an audible signal, lights a trouble LED on the FSCS, and logs or prints an alarm.
  • 4-20mA Wiring Scenarios: Supports 2-wire 4-20mA devices, either powered from the VLC or from an external 24 VDC fire alarm power supply. Precision resistors (250Ω ¼W ±1%) are used for current-to-voltage conversion.
  • Binary Output Wiring: Typical binary output wiring scenarios involve connecting BO loads to the VLC terminals, with a return ground connected to the UL listed 24 VAC transformer.

Maintenance Features:

  • Troubleshooting: Detailed information and technical specifications, over-current protection device (fuse) replacement, location, and rating, correct mounting, orientation, and clearances, recommended wiring methods and guidelines, electrical ratings of input power and extended circuits, and impedance values for testing open/short circuit and ground faults are available in the VisualLogic Controllers Installation & Wiring Guide (LTBT-TM-VLC) and VLC-1188-S data sheet (LTBT-VLC-1188-S).
  • Resetting Protection Devices: After a short circuit event, a binary output must be cycled off and back on to reset the protection devices and ensure proper operation.
  • Transformer Selection: It is crucial to use a UL tested and approved transformer for use with Alerton smoke products. Refer to the "Transformer selection information" section in the manual for compatible models (e.g., Intech 2011MWDH, 10011DHCB; Functional Devices PSH500A, PSH100A100AB10, PSH100AB10; Edwards 598 for BTI-S only). The BTI-S requires a full-wave device with an ungrounded, non-shared secondary.
