Overview

This supplement describes the main characteristics of the Alfa TCT 6-speed twin dry clutch automatic transmission fitted on the car. To use the gearbox correctly, this supplement must be read completely to understand the correct, permitted operations from the outset. For all other information, comply with the instructions in the Owner Handbook.

Function Description

The Alfa TCT 6-speed automatic transmission is an electronically managed system where gear shifting occurs automatically based on instantaneous car usage parameters, including car speed, road gradient, and accelerator pedal position. This innovative transmission integrates with the Start&Stop system, offering a modern alternative to traditional automatic transmissions with built-in torque converters. Additionally, it provides the option for manual gear changes using the gear lever in sequential mode.

The transmission offers several driving modes:

  • Automatic Driving Mode (D): In this mode, the electronic transmission control unit selects the best gear ratio based on speed, engine load (accelerator pedal position), and road gradient. For quick acceleration, fully pressing the accelerator pedal activates the kick-down function, causing the transmission to downshift.
  • Sequential Driving Mode (+/-): This mode allows for manual gear changes, operating like a manual gearbox. The driver can shift to a higher gear by moving the lever towards '+' or a lower gear by moving it towards '-'. The engaged gear is displayed on the dashboard.
  • Integration with "Alfa DNA" System: The "Alfa DNA" system offers three distinct driving modes:
    • "Natural": Optimizes gear shifting at low engine speeds for enhanced comfort and reduced fuel consumption.
    • "Dynamic": Engages higher engine speeds for a sportier driving experience.
    • "All Weather": A driving program designed for roads with poor grip conditions, such as snow, ice, or mud.

Usage Features

Selector Lever Positions:

  • P (Park): Corresponds to the neutral position of the transmission and mechanically locks the drive wheels. It should only be engaged when the vehicle is stationary and the handbrake is applied. The ignition key can only be removed when the lever is in position P.
  • R (Reverse): Engages reverse gear. The engine cannot be started with the lever in position R. Reverse should only be engaged when the car is stationary, the engine is at idling speed, and the accelerator is fully released.
  • N (Neutral): Corresponds to neutral for a standard manual gearbox. The engine can be started with the lever in position N. It is advisable to engage N during prolonged stops.
  • D (Drive): The lever position for standard automatic forward driving.

Starting the Engine: The car is equipped with an electronic engine lock device. Starting is only permitted with the gear lever in position P or N (with or without the brake pedal pressed).

Start&Stop System: When the car is stationary and the Start&Stop system is activated, the engine stops if the gear lever is in any position other than R. The engine restarts automatically if the brake pedal is released (and the lever is not in N or P), the lever is shifted to an unstable position (+, -, or R), the lever is moved from D to sequential mode, or by using the steering wheel levers (if equipped).

Moving the Car: To move the car from P, press the brake pedal, use the button on the gear lever, and move the lever to the desired position (D, R, or sequential). The car will start moving (creeping effect) as soon as the brake pedal is released, without needing to press the accelerator pedal.

Gear Change via Steering Wheel Levers (if equipped): On some versions, gear changes can be made using controls on the steering wheel. Pulling the '+' lever towards the driver engages a higher gear, while pulling the '-' lever engages a lower gear. These controls can be used when the gear lever is in sequential or D position. Incorrect use (pushing levers towards the dashboard) could damage them.

Acoustic Signal: An acoustic signal is heard for safety reasons in several situations, such as when the driver's side door is opened with the engine running and the gear lever is not in P, or if the engine is switched off with the gear lever not in P. It also sounds if the accelerator/brake pedals are not pressed for at least 3 minutes with creeping deactivated, if the brake pedal is pressed for over 10 minutes, or if a fault is detected in the gearbox.
