Overview

The Water Wiggler Model 4WW is a device designed to create ripples in a bird bath, preventing stagnant water and attracting birds.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Water Wiggler is to generate continuous waves or ripples in a bird bath. This movement helps to keep the water from becoming stagnant, which can deter birds and encourage mosquito breeding. By creating movement, the device makes the water more appealing to birds, as moving water is often perceived as fresher and safer. The device operates on batteries, driving a "stirring device" that agitates the water.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model: 4WW
  • Power Source: Requires two "D" cell batteries.
  • Components: Consists of a dome, a base, a motor, a stirring device, and three "U" shaped wire supports (legs).
  • Material: The battery/motor compartment is made of plastic.

Usage Features:

  • Assembly:
    1. Remove the screw from the top of the dome to separate it from the base.
    2. Insert the three "U" shaped wire supports into the base of the unit. These metal legs are crucial for stability and proper operation; the unit should not be used without them.
    3. Attach the "stirring device" to the motor by pressing it into place using the center hole on the stirring device.
    4. Insert the two "D" cell batteries into the unit, ensuring correct polarity as indicated. The stirring device will begin turning once the batteries are inserted.
    5. Reinstall the screw on top of the dome to close the unit.
  • Placement:
    • Place the Water Wiggler in the deepest portion of the bird bath.
    • Water Level Requirement: The maximum high-water level in the bird bath must remain at least 1/4" below the plastic bottom of the Water Wiggler.
    • Adjusting Height: To determine if the unit needs to be raised, place a yardstick or other straightedge across the top rim of the bird bath. If the simulated maximum high-water level (from the straightedge) is less than 1/4" from the plastic bottom of the Water Wiggler, then a stable and level support must be placed under the Water Wiggler to raise it. Ensure the unit is secure and will not fall off this raised support.
  • Operation: Once assembled and placed in water with batteries inserted, the stirring device will continuously create ripples.
  • Limitations:
    • Not a De-icer: This unit is not designed to de-ice water. It should be removed, and batteries stored, during winter months.
    • No Tipping: Do not allow the unit to tip over in the bird bath.
    • No Attachments: Prevent materials like algae, twigs, or leaves from becoming attached to the agitator, as this can significantly shorten battery life.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Replacement: Change batteries when the unit no longer creates waves. This indicates the batteries are depleted.
  • Water Level Monitoring: Always keep the water level at least 1/4" below the plastic base to prevent the battery/motor compartment from getting wet.
  • Addressing Wet Compartment: If the plastic battery/motor compartment does become wet:
    1. Open the unit and immediately remove the batteries.
    2. Dry the batteries thoroughly with a towel.
    3. Use a hair dryer to completely dry the battery compartment and the motor.
  • Winter Storage: During winter, remove the batteries from the unit and store the Water Wiggler indoors to prevent damage from freezing temperatures.
  • Cleaning: Regularly check for and remove any algae, twigs, or leaves that may attach to the agitator to ensure optimal performance and battery life.

Cautions:

  • Do not immerse the plastic battery/motor compartment in water. This is critical to prevent damage to the electronic components.
  • Always ensure the metal legs are installed before use to maintain stability and proper function.
  • The unit will not de-ice water, so it should not be used for this purpose.
