Useofthehydraulicretarderduringinclementweatherorwhen
roadsurfacesareslipperycouldresultindeath,seriousinjury,
orpropertydamage.Onvehicleswhichhaveaprimaryretarder
controlbaseduponclosedthrottleposition,brakepedalposition,or
brakeapplypressure,alwaysmanuallydisabletheretardercontrols
duringinclementweatherorslipperyroadconditions,usingtheOEM
providedretarderenableswitchifpresent.
Ifthetransmissionretarderdoesnotapply,death,seriousinjury,or
propertydamagemayoccur.Operatorshouldbepreparedtoapply
vehiclebrakesorotherretarderdeviceifthetransmissionretarder
doesnotapply.
Ifthetransmissionretarderdoesnotfunction,death,seriousinjury,
orpropertydamagemayoccur.Besuretotestforproperretarder
functionperiodically.Ifaretarderispresentbutisnotdetectedby
“autodetect,”theretarderwillnotfunction.Whenevertheretarder
doesnotapply,seekservicehelpimmediately.
RegardlessofthetypeofAllisonretardercontrolsonyourvehicle(referto
Table4–7),thefollowingsafetyfeaturesarecommontoeachconguration:
•Theretardercanbedisabledwheninclementweatherorslipperyroad
conditionsarepresent.
•Vehiclebrakelightsshouldalwaysbeonwhentheretarderisapplied
(periodicallyverifytheyareworking).
•Anti-lockBrakeSystem(ABS)sendsasignaltotheTCMtoindicatethe
brakesystemisactivated.
NOTE:Theretarderisautomaticallydisabledandthelockupclutch
isdisengagedwhenevertheABSisactive.IftheABSmalfunctions,it
isrecommendedtheretarderenableswitchbedisabled,ifequipped.
NOTE:Ifyourtransmissionhasaretarderbutitisnotfunctioning,
itmaynothavebeenautodetectedduringvehiclemanufacture.
