Do you have a question about the Alnor HRU-WALL and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Alnor HRU-WALL and HRU-WALL-RC are decentralized, ductless heat recovery ventilation units designed for residential buildings. Often referred to as "push & pull" units, they are wall-mounted and suitable for single-room applications. It is recommended to install two units in a pair, where one unit extracts air while the other supplies it, ensuring balanced ventilation. These pairs can be installed in the same room or in different rooms (e.g., living room and bedroom). The units are designed for continuous operation and should only be stopped for maintenance or service. If heat exchange is not required (e.g., during mild seasons or when using the "summer free cooling" option), it is recommended to set the unit to "extract-only" or "intake-only" mode rather than switching it off completely.

Function Description:

The unit operates by alternately extracting and supplying air for 70-second intervals. When warm indoor air is extracted, it heats the ceramic heat exchanger, accumulating thermal energy. When cold outdoor air is supplied, it passes through the preheated exchanger, recovering most of the thermal energy that would otherwise be lost during ventilation.

Common Features:

  • Heat exchanger: Ceramic, regenerative, honeycomb structure for high thermal efficiency.
  • Telescopic inner pipe: High-quality, impact and UV-resistant, 100% recycled ABS, black color, adjustable from 300-570 mm.
  • Front cover: Removable without tools for cleaning.
  • Installation plate: Facilitates easy access to the heat exchanger from inside the room.
  • Anti-dust filter: Located on the fan housing (HRU-WALL) or next to the ceramic exchanger (HRU-WALL-RC), easily removable for user cleaning.
  • Outer grille: External steel cover, white RAL 9010, with acoustic lining and insect screen.
  • Energy efficient EC fan: Single-phase, reversible brushless motor with integral thermal protection, high-quality ball bearings, and "winglet" blades for optimized quietness and efficiency. Designed for continuous reversible running.
  • Electrical grounding: Double insulated, no earth connection required.

Usage Features:

HRU-WALL (Controlled by 3 two-position switches):

  • Operating modes:
    • OFF: Unit is off.
    • Speed 1, 2, 3: Continuous running at selected speed.
    • Heat recovery (Alternate flow): Fan alternates between extract and intake, inversion time automatically defined by temperature sensor.
    • Free cooling (One-way mode): Stops alternate flow, fan operates in extract-only or intake-only mode to avoid heat exchange. Set via internal jumpers (A for extract-only, B for intake-only). LED on front cover indicates when active.
  • Boost function: Can be activated via a dedicated switch or room sensors (optional), running the unit at increased speed.
  • Synchronization: For paired units, set jumpers (A for one unit, B for the other) to ensure one extracts while the other supplies. Up to 10 units can be connected to a single HRU-WALL-CONTR or HRU-WALL-CONTR-I controller.
    • Reset synchronization (Option 1): If units are connected to a main switch, switch it OFF then ON.
    • Reset synchronization (Option 2): If units are not connected to a main switch, press the black pin on each unit for at least 3 seconds.

HRU-WALL-RC (Controlled by infrared remote controller with LCD display):

  • Operating modes (via remote controller):
    • ON/OFF: Turns the unit on or off.
    • Airflow direction: Alternate (heat recovery), Extract-only, Intake-only.
    • Continuous running speed: 5 speeds (20m³/h to 60m³/h).
    • Comfort mode: Optimizes acoustic and thermal comfort. Inversion time varies automatically (40-120 seconds) based on temperature sensor. First cycle is 120 seconds.
    • Efficiency mode: Optimizes thermal efficiency. Inversion time fixed at about 70 seconds.
    • BOOST speed: Runs at maximum speed (Speed 5) for 15 minutes in extract-only mode, then returns to the previous setting. Cannot be activated if the unit is OFF.
    • Free cooling: Unit runs in extract-only or intake-only to avoid heat recovery.
    • Smart humidity control: Automatically increases fan speed when a rapid change in relative humidity is detected. Returns to selected speed after 10 minutes. Active in alternate or extract-only modes. Can be disabled by pressing the humidity control button for 5 seconds.
    • Antifrost function: Prevents heat exchanger icing at very low outdoor temperatures. When active, the unit runs in extract-only at speed 1 for 30 minutes.
    • Acoustic signal: A short signal confirms settings transfer. Can be deactivated/reactivated by pressing the acoustic signal button for 7 seconds.
  • LED indicators:
    • Green: Normal operation, short signal for setting transfer.
    • Red: OFF (long signal), Antifrost active (fixed).
    • Yellow (fixed): Filter maintenance required.
    • Blue (fixed): Boost active.
    • Blue (flashing): Smart humidity control active.
    • Purple (fixed): Unit not properly coupled with support base.
  • Backup button (on unit): In case of lost remote or dead batteries, allows ON/OFF control. Airflow direction is always alternate, and operation mode (comfort/efficiency) is the last selected via remote.
  • Synchronization: Up to 10 units can be synchronized via a 2-pole twisted pair wire (max 30m) to synchronize mode and inversion time. Fan speed, and alternate/extract/intake modes are controlled independently per unit. COMFORT/EFFICIENCY mode changes synchronize across all units.
    • Reset synchronization: Same as HRU-WALL (Option 1 or 2).
  • Remote controller: Infrared, with LCD display, wall-mountable support base with magnet. Requires two AAA batteries (not supplied). Point the controller towards the unit's IR receiver (left side) for optimal transmission. One remote can control multiple units.

Maintenance Features:

  • Filter cleaning (user maintenance):
    • The yellow LED indicates when filters need cleaning (every 3 months).
    • Turn off the unit at the main switch.
    • Remove the front cover by pulling it.
    • Remove the fan assembly by turning the central screw counter-clockwise and pulling it out.
    • Remove the filters from both sides of the ceramic exchanger (HRU-WALL-RC) or from the fan housing (HRU-WALL).
    • Clean filters with water and mild soap, then let them dry completely.
    • Reassemble in reverse order.
    • Reset the filter alarm by pressing the dedicated button on the remote (HRU-WALL-RC) or by switching the unit off and on (HRU-WALL).
  • Heat exchanger cleaning (service by qualified personnel):
    • Turn off the unit at the main switch.
    • Remove the front cover and fan assembly.
    • Remove the ceramic heat exchanger from the inner pipe.
    • Clean the exchanger with water and mild soap, ensuring it is completely dry before reinstallation.
    • Reassemble in reverse order.
  • Maintenance-cleaning register: A dedicated section in the manual to record dates of filter cleaning, filter replacement, and heat exchanger cleaning.
