Overview

This document is the Owner's Manual for the Amana ACC3660 Gas Downdraft Cooktop, designed for use with Natural Gas ONLY. It provides comprehensive instructions for installation, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Function Description:

The Amana ACC3660 is a gas downdraft cooktop that features surface burners and the capability to integrate grill or griddle accessories. Its primary function is to provide a versatile cooking surface for various culinary tasks, from simmering to high-heat frying and grilling. The downdraft ventilation system is integrated into the cooktop to remove cooking vapors, odors, and smoke directly from the cooking surface.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Fuel Type: Natural Gas ONLY. The cooktop is not designed for use with LP/Propane gas.
  • Burner Type: Standard burner cartridges come with two gas burners. Accessory cartridges include a gas grill burner and a gas grill burner for a griddle.
  • Flame Adjustment: Surface burners feature adjustable air shutters to control flame characteristics. A properly adjusted flame on a high setting should be clean and blue with a distinct inner cone approximately 1/4 to 1/2 inch long.
  • Ventilation: Features a variable-speed downdraft exhaust fan built into the center of the cooktop. The fan automatically turns on at low speed when the grill or griddle is in operation and can be manually set to high speed. The fan cannot be turned off while the grill or griddle are operating.
  • Ignition: Burners should ignite within 4 seconds. If not, troubleshooting steps involving burner cap placement and air shutter adjustment are provided.
  • Electrical Requirements: The system that lights the burners is electric, requiring proper grounding and connection to the main power supply.

Usage Features:

  • Cartridge System: The cooktop utilizes a cartridge system, allowing users to customize their cooking surface by installing different accessories like standard gas burners, a grill, or a griddle. Instructions are provided for installing and removing both burner and grill/griddle cartridges.
  • Surface Burner Controls: Control knobs are used to ignite and adjust the flame intensity from LITE (ignition) to HI, MED, and LO settings.
    • HI: Used to bring food to boiling temperatures.
    • MED: Used to maintain boiling of larger amounts of food, low-temperature frying.
    • LO: Used to prepare food at less than boiling temperatures or to simmer.
  • Cookware Recommendations: Emphasizes the use of flat-bottomed, heavy-gauge metal cookware with secure handles. Proper pan size is crucial, matching the flame size to prevent ignition of clothing, hot handles, or burns. Cookware materials like aluminum, stainless steel, copper clad/tin lined, cast iron, enamelware, and ceramic (glass) are discussed with their respective heating characteristics and recommended uses.
  • Grill/Griddle Operation:
    • Requires the grill burner to be inserted into the cooktop well, followed by the grill grate or griddle accessory.
    • The griddle accessory must be placed directly over the grill burner with the grease trap toward the rear. The grill grate and griddle accessory cannot be used simultaneously.
    • Preheating the grill for approximately 10 minutes at MED HI is recommended.
    • The grill or griddle should not be set at HI without food to prevent damage to the non-stick finish.
    • The fan automatically activates at low speed when the grill or griddle is in use.
  • Power Outage Operation: Surface burners can be manually ignited with a match during a power outage. However, attempting to light the grill burner during a power failure is not recommended due to potential smoke and fire hazards if the fan is not running.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: Detailed instructions for cleaning various parts:
    • Burner caps and grates: Frequent cleaning with soap and water, and non-abrasive pads. For deep cleaning, they can be soaked in a plastic bag with 1/2 cup ammonia (not poured directly onto grates).
    • Gas burners: Do not require cleaning as soil burns off during cooking.
    • Cooktop trim: Clean with a damp cloth and soapy water, or non-abrasive cleaners/pads. Avoid harsh powders, oven cleaners, scouring pads, or steel wool.
    • Control knobs: Pull off, wash gently (do not soak), dry, and return.
    • Fan cover and filter: Remove filter cover, clean filter and cover with a damp cloth and soapy water, or in a dishwasher. Soak for dried-on soil. Always replace before operating.
    • Grill grate or griddle accessory: Wash with damp cloth and soapy water, or in a dishwasher. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
    • Drip pan, cartridge pan, or drip bowls: Clean with a damp cloth and soapy water. Soak for dried-on soil.
    • Glass control panel and gasket: Remove knobs, lift glass and gasket, clean with soap and warm water, then replace.
  • Stainless Steel Care: Recommends warm soapy water and a soft, clean cloth for routine cleaning. For heavy soil, use a stainless steel cleaner designed for kitchen appliances. Avoid abrasive powders/liquids, citrus-based cleaners, ammonia, steel wool pads, abrasive cloths, oven cleansers, and acidic/vinegar-based products, as these can cause discoloration or damage.
  • Vent Filter Maintenance: The vent filter should be cleaned frequently to prevent grease accumulation. It can be cleaned in a dishwasher or with a damp cloth and warm soapy water.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: Provides solutions for common issues such as the appliance not working (power outage, tripped breaker), control knobs not turning, surface burners not lighting (improper installation), roaring/loud flame (improper air shutter setting), cracking/popping sound (wet utensils/spillage), and discoloration/water spots (dirt, white vinegar solution).

Safety Information:

The manual includes important safety warnings and precautions, such as:

  • General Safety: Proper installation and grounding by a qualified technician, never using the appliance for room heating, keeping children away, wearing proper apparel, referring servicing to qualified technicians, avoiding storage of flammable materials, and using dry potholders.
  • Surface Burner Safety: Using proper pan size, never leaving burners unattended, ensuring reflector pans/drip bowls are in place, avoiding aluminum foil liners (unless specified), using suitable glazed cooking utensils, and turning utensil handles inward.
  • Fire Safety: Instructions for smothering surface burner fires with a non-flammable lid, baking soda, or a Class ABC/BC extinguisher, and immediately turning off controls, power, and gas supply.
  • Gas Leaks: What to do if you smell gas (do not light appliances, touch electrical switches, or use phones; call gas supplier or fire department).
  • Delayed Ignition: Instructions for re-attempting ignition and contacting service if burners do not light within 4 seconds.
  • Ventilation Safety: Importance of cleaning ventilating hoods frequently and turning on the fan when flaming foods.
  • Downdraft Operation: Warning against operating the cooktop without the filter to avoid smoke damage or fire.
  • California Proposition 65 Warning: Information regarding potential exposure to chemicals known to cause cancer or reproductive harm.

The manual concludes with warranty information, outlining a full one-year warranty and a limited second through fifth-year warranty on specific parts, and provides contact information for Amana Appliances for service and consumer affairs.
