Overview

This manual describes the Kindle Heater Allison and Bella models, which are commercial patio heaters designed to provide mood and atmosphere for outdoor spaces. These heaters are intended for use with Propane gas (LPG) only and are not to be operated indoors due to the production of carbon dioxide gas, which can cause injury or death in enclosed spaces.

Function Description

The Kindle Heater Allison and Bella models are outdoor patio heaters that incorporate a decorative element, resembling a large floor lamp. They are designed to provide warmth and enhance the ambiance of commercial outdoor patios. The core function is to generate heat using propane gas, which is then reflected and distributed by a shade. The design aims to reinvent the traditional patio heater by integrating it into a stylish living element.

Usage Features

The assembly process for both the Allison and Bella models involves several steps to ensure stability and proper operation.

  1. Base Assembly: The initial step requires attaching three large C-brackets to a weighted base using bolts, secondary nuts, and lock washers, which must be tightened firmly for stability.
  2. Socket Plate and Support Bracket: For the Allison model, the socket plate is attached to the top of the C-brackets, followed by connecting the support bracket using acorn nuts, bolts, and lock washers. The Bella model has a slightly different support bracket that uses a nylon bushing and a flat washer, with one attachment point that swivels to allow the base to clear.
  3. Gas Pipe and Heater Head Connection: The gas pipe, which has Teflon tape on one end, is firmly attached to the heater head.
  4. Pole Installation: A black pole is then slid over the gas pipe and secured with four smaller screws.
  5. Reflector and Shade Bracket: The reflector and shade bracket are attached to the top of the heater head.
  6. Neck and Trim Ring/Cocktail Table: The heater head is placed upside down, and the trim ring (or an optional cocktail table) and the Kindle neck are slid over the pole until they rest snugly against the base of the heater head.
  7. Logo Alignment: The Kindle logo on the neck should be aligned with the control knob for aesthetic and functional consistency.
  8. Hose Clamp: A hose clamp is tightened on the base of the Kindle neck, and a secondary hose clamp is provided to prevent the neck from sliding down during extended use.
  9. Optional Light Ring: An optional light ring can be attached to the base of the Kindle neck using three small self-tapping screws. Care must be taken not to overtighten these screws to avoid cracking the light ring.
  10. Base Cover Installation: The Kindle base cover is placed over the weighted base, and the entire heater assembly is slid into the socket post. If a light ring is installed, caution is advised to prevent damage during this step.
  11. Trim Ring/Cocktail Table on Base: A trim ring (or optional cocktail table) is snapped onto the top portion of the Kindle Base.
  12. Shade Placement: With assistance, the Kindle Heater is leaned to one side, and the shade is gently placed on top of the heater, resting on the shade bracket. Care must be taken not to damage the Firewall lining of the shade.
  13. Propane Tank and Regulator Connection: The Kindle base cover is lifted and rested on the support bracket. The regulator is then attached to the gas pipe. The propane tank is placed inside the Kindle base cover, on top of the weighted base. The regulator is then attached to the propane tank, and the valve on the propane tank is opened.
  14. Ignition Procedure: To ignite the heater, the control knob is turned to "PILOT," pushed in, and held. While holding the pilot knob, the red ignitor button is pressed and held until the pilot flame ignites. For a new tank, this may take up to two minutes to purge air from the gas line. The pilot knob should be held for 30 seconds after ignition, then turned to "ON."
  15. Stability in Wind: For added stability against wind gusts, it is highly recommended to keep the propane tank inside the Kindle base to provide extra ballast. The use of enclosed floor clamps (for US models only) is also recommended. During windy situations, the Kindle Shade should be removed, and heaters should be sheltered from wind gusts.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of the Kindle Heater.

  1. Body & Shade (Outside) Cleaning: The Kindle body and the exterior of the lampshade are made of composite resins that are resistant to scratches, chemicals, UV, and fading. These surfaces, excluding the Firewall, should be regularly washed with soapy water using a rag or sponge (avoid abrasive pads) and then towel-dried. A light multipurpose non-abrasive cleaner, such as "Simple Green," can also be used effectively.
  2. Shade (Inside) Cleaning (Firewall): The interior of the shade features a flannel-like grey material called "Firewall," a technical patented material designed to reflect heat. This material requires careful cleaning. It can be dusted to remove dirt, but scrubbing, brushing, or using excessive moisture or abrasion should be avoided to prevent damage. If a tear occurs in the Firewall material, Kindle Living should be contacted for a replacement.
  3. Hardware and Shade Bracket: The hardware and shade bracket should be kept clean and periodically inspected for any unusual wear and tear. They should also be re-tightened periodically to maintain structural integrity.
  4. Professional Servicing: It is recommended to have the Kindle professionally serviced at least once a year. More frequent servicing may be necessary in adverse conditions, such as heavy commercial use, operation in extreme environments, or beachside locations.
  5. Storage: When storing the Kindle Heater, it should be protected from excess moisture and debris. It is important to clean the heater prior to its first use after storage.
  6. Protective Oils: During the first 30 minutes of initial use, some smoke may rise from the Kindle Heater due to protective oils used during the manufacturing process. This is normal.
  7. Firewall Damage: Do not use the heater if there are any tears or rips in the Firewall lining of the Kindle Shade. Care should be taken during transport, storage, and assembly to prevent such damage.

Limited Warranty & Service

Kindle Living products are warranted against manufacturing defects for a period of one year from the date of purchase, with accessory lights and other electronic products warranted for 90 days. The warranty covers factory repair or replacement of parts at the company's sole option and excludes packing and freight charges. The warranty does not cover damage caused by neglect, failure to take precautionary measures during windy conditions, or non-intended use. For any questions regarding warranty terms, replacement parts, repairs, maintenance, or use, Kindle Living should be contacted directly. It is important to note that Kindle Living is not the manufacturer of the heaters themselves, only the decorative covers. The heaters carry their own separate manufacturer's limited warranty, which will be fulfilled directly by the heater manufacturer. Refer to the heater instructions for additional information regarding the heater's warranty.
