American Flame: E-Stop Gas Timer
Model: ESTOP1-0H
Description The E-Stop Gas Timer is an emergency shut-off, mechanical timer, and manual shut-off gas valve
designed to be installed on the inlet side of a gas appliance to enable the user to control the time gas is allowed to ow
to a gas appliance. This is a mechanical timer (no batteries or power required) that has the ability to control gas ow for
1-hour (60 minutes) using the ESTOP1-0H model or 2.5-hours (150 minutes) using the ESTOP2-5H model. In addition,
both models have an emergency shut-off (red knob) that enables the user to quickly and easily shut the gas completely
OFF, should the need arise.
The E-Stop Gas Timer body is 4-inches high x 2 -inches wide x 2 ⅛ -inches deep and can replace a manual shut-off
valve and meet local code requirements as the accessible shut-off valve. It can be use for multiple applications (indoor
or outdoor) from gas re pits, gas grills, gas logs, gas torch lights, etc., wherever a shut-off valve is a requirement or a
specied by a customer.

Overview

The E-Stop Gas Timer is a safety-focused, mechanical gas valve designed to provide timed gas flow and an emergency shut-off function for gas appliances. It operates entirely without batteries or external power, relying on a mechanical timer mechanism. This device is intended for installation on the inlet side of a gas appliance, allowing the user to control the duration of gas flow.

Function Description

The primary function of the E-Stop Gas Timer is to regulate the time gas is supplied to an appliance. It integrates a mechanical timer with a manual shut-off gas valve. Two models are available: the ESTOP1-0H, which controls gas flow for up to 1 hour (60 minutes), and the ESTOP2-5H, which allows for up to 2.5 hours (150 minutes) of gas flow.

In addition to timed operation, a crucial safety feature is the emergency shut-off. This is activated by a prominent red knob, enabling users to quickly and easily cut off the gas supply completely in case of an emergency or when the appliance is no longer needed. When the red knob is pressed inward, it locks down with a "click," immediately stopping gas flow. To resume gas flow, the red knob must be turned clockwise until it "pops" outward.

The device is designed to replace a standard manual shut-off valve and can meet local code requirements for an accessible shut-off valve. It is suitable for a wide range of indoor and outdoor applications, including gas fire pits, gas grills, gas logs, and gas torch lights, or wherever a shut-off valve is required or specified.

Usage Features

Installation:

The E-Stop Gas Timer is designed for straightforward installation. The recommended installation position is upright. It features two inlet and two outlet gas connections, with two 1/2" NPT plugs provided to seal any unused connections. Gas supply should be connected to an inlet, with the arrow on the device pointing into the valve, and the outlet side connected to the gas appliance. After plumbing is complete, a gas leak test is mandatory to ensure safety.

Mounting:

The timer offers flexible mounting options. It can be mounted from the side using four provided holes (two per side) or by using the two mounting hole tabs located at the top and bottom of the body when facing forward. Each mounting hole accommodates 3/16-24 machine screws. For outdoor applications, the use of stainless steel screws is recommended for durability.

Operation:

To turn on the gas and initiate the timer:

  1. Set the Time: Rotate the clear timer dial clockwise past the "20" mark for the ESTOP1-0H model or past the "0.5" mark for the ESTOP2-5H model. This action sets the desired countdown time, and the timer will begin "ticking."
  2. Enable Gas Flow: Turn the red knob clockwise. It will rotate about 1½ turns until it "pops" outward. This action opens the gas valve, allowing gas to flow to the appliance, which can then be lit.

To turn off the gas:

  • Timer Expiration: The gas flow will automatically stop when the set time on the timer expires.
  • Manual Shut-off: Alternatively, the user can manually stop the gas flow at any time by simply pressing the red knob inward. The knob will lock down with a "click," immediately cutting off the gas supply.

Important Operational Notes:

  • Users should not force the timer dial to the OFF position after the time has been set. Doing so can weaken the internal spring mechanism and affect the accuracy of the timer.
  • The device is designed with fine mesh screens in the inlets to filter out any debris, helping to maintain clean gas flow and prevent blockages.

Maintenance Features

The E-Stop Gas Timer is designed for minimal maintenance due to its mechanical nature. However, regular checks are recommended to ensure continued safe and proper operation.

Troubleshooting:

The manual provides a comprehensive troubleshooting guide for common issues:

  • No Gas Flow:

    • Ensure the timer dial has been rotated beyond the "turn past" position to set the time.
    • Verify that the red knob is protruding outward in the ON position.
    • Check if the set time has expired; if so, restart the timer.
    • Confirm that the primary gas supply is turned ON.
    • Ensure the gas timer is plumbed correctly according to the installation instructions.
    • Inspect for any visible physical damage to the unit.
    • Verify that other gas valves, both before and after the timer in the gas line, are operating correctly.
    • Check the inlet mesh screen for debris blockage, which could impede gas flow.
  • Gas Flow Won't Stop:

    • Confirm that the timer is plumbed correctly and not backward. Check the inlets and outlets on the timer.
    • Verify that the gas pressure does not exceed the maximum allowable pressure (1/2" PSI).
    • Ensure the timer is plumbed into both inlet lines and not just one of the outlets.
    • Inspect for any physical damage; if damage is found, the timer should be replaced.

General Maintenance Advice:

  • It is crucial to read and follow all instructions carefully. Failure to do so could damage the product or create a hazardous condition.
  • Before installation, verify that the E-Stop Gas Timer's ratings are suitable for the specific application.
  • Installation should only be performed by a trained, experienced service technician or gas plumber.
  • After installation, a thorough check of the product's operation, as outlined in the instructions, is essential to confirm proper functionality.
  • The device is designed to filter debris through its inlet mesh screens, but periodic inspection of these screens for excessive buildup may be beneficial, especially if gas flow issues arise.

The E-Stop Gas Timer is a robust, mechanically operated device intended to enhance safety and convenience in gas appliance operation through its timed gas flow and immediate shut-off capabilities.
