Overview

This document provides installation, operation, and maintenance instructions for the American Standard Central Air Conditioner, specifically models TCM030F1, TCM036F1, TCM042F1, and TCM048F1. These units are manufactured housing package cooling units with optional electric heat, available in 2-1/2 to 4 ton capacities.

Function Description:

The central air conditioner is designed for both cooling and optional heating functions, controlled by a room thermostat. The system operates automatically once the system switch is set to either HEAT or COOL. For units with an automatic changeover thermostat, the system can switch between heating and cooling based on room temperature. The cooling cycle involves energizing the indoor fan and compressor circuits, which starts the indoor fan motor, compressor, and outdoor fan motor. For heating, the electric heaters are activated by the thermostat's "W1" circuit, and if two stages of heat are provided, the "W2" circuit can be energized for additional heat. The indoor fan must be configured to operate during the heating mode for the heater control circuit to be energized.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Models Covered: TCM030F1, TCM036F1, TCM042F1, TCM048F1.
  • Capacity: 2-1/2 to 4 Tons.
  • Filter Requirements: Filters are essential for these units. The basic unit does not include filters but can accommodate a filter frame accessory or an installer-provided filter rack. Filters must be installed in the return air system.
    • TCM030F: 1000 Nominal CFM, 3.33 Sq Ft Filter Size, 0.05 Resistance.
    • TCM036F: 1200 Nominal CFM, 4.00 Sq Ft Filter Size, 0.05 Resistance.
    • TCM042F: 1400 Nominal CFM, 4.67 Sq Ft Filter Size, 0.05 Resistance.
    • TCM048F: 1600 Nominal CFM, 5.33 Sq Ft Filter Size, 0.05 Resistance.
    • These filter footages are based on 300 F.P.M. face velocity.
  • Condensate Drain: A 3/4-inch female NPT condensate drain connection is provided. The drain line must be trapped, filled with water before starting, pitched 1/4" per foot downward, and made of 3/4" pipe size. It should not be connected to a closed drain system.
  • Electrical Connections:
    • Wiring and grounding must comply with local codes or the National Electrical Code ANSI/NFPA 70.
    • A weatherproof disconnect switch must be provided on the unit side or nearby and within sight.
    • Branch circuit protection must match the unit rating plate.
    • Power supply lines require weathertight conduit and strain relief. Flexible conduit supports are recommended to prevent noise.
    • Thermostat wire sizes and maximum lengths: 18 AWG (75 ft), 16 AWG (125 ft), 14 AWG (200 ft). Total resistance of low voltage wires must not exceed one (1) ohm.
    • The sump heater should be energized for eight (8) hours prior to starting the compressor.
  • Ductwork: All conditioned air ductwork outside the structure must be insulated with at least 2 inches of insulation and weatherproofed. A flexible, watertight connection made of heavy canvas is required for horizontal ductwork to prevent noise transmission.

Usage Features:

  • Installation:
    • Units should be positioned on a level pad, the size of the unit or larger, ensuring no contact with the structure.
    • Outdoor supply and return air ducts should be as short as possible.
    • Rubber isolators are provided for placement under the unit.
    • Ductwork must be insulated and weatherproofed with a proper seal where it enters the structure.
  • Pre-Start Checklist: Before starting, verify the unit is correctly located and level, ductwork is clean and sealed, condensate line is properly sized and trapped, filter size and number are correct, wiring connections are tight, fuse sizes are correct, thermostat is properly wired and set, air conditioning systems have been checked, condenser and indoor blower motors turn freely, indoor blower speed is set, and all covers and access panels are in place.
  • Cooling Start-Up: Set the thermostat system selector to OFF, then apply power. Do not change the thermostat system switch until the sump heater has been energized for eight hours to evaporate any liquid R-22.
  • Heating Start-Up: Ensure the system selector switch is set to OFF or place the heating selector lever at a setting below room temperature.
  • Troubleshooting: A comprehensive chart is provided to diagnose system faults related to the refrigerant circuit (liquid pressure, suction pressure, frosting, compressor issues) and electrical components (compressor/fan start-up, compressor hums, cycles on IOL, blower issues).

Maintenance Features:

  • Routine Maintenance by Owner:
    • Filters: Inspect monthly, or weekly for new homes during the first four weeks. Replace disposable filters; do not clean them. Clean permanent filters with mild detergent and water, ensuring they are thoroughly dry before reinstallation. Replace permanent filters annually if washing fails or signs of deterioration appear.
    • Unit Cabinet: Clean regularly.
    • Condenser Coil: Clean the coil surface vertically with a soft-bristled brush to remove dust and dirt. Keep all vegetation away from the condenser coil area.
    • General Inspection: Conduct a general unit inspection regularly.
  • Maintenance by Serviceman (Cooling Season):
    • Annual inspection by a qualified serviceman is recommended.
    • Check filters (cleaning or replacement), motors and drive system components, gaskets, safety controls (mechanical cleaning), electrical components and wiring (replacement and connection tightness), condensate drain (cleaning), unit duct connections (soundness and sealing), unit mounting support (structural integrity), and overall unit deterioration.
  • Maintenance by Serviceman (Heating Season):
    • Inspect the unit to ensure unobstructed airflow for the condenser coil.
    • Verify control panel wiring for tight electrical connections and intact wire insulation.
  • Safety Warnings: The product contains fiberglass wool insulation. Fiberglass dust and ceramic fibers are believed by the State of California to cause cancer through inhalation and may cause respiratory, skin, or eye irritation.
    • Precautionary Measures: Avoid breathing fiberglass dust, use a NIOSH approved dust/mist respirator, avoid skin/eye contact (wear long-sleeved clothing, gloves, eye protection), and wash clothes separately.
    • First Aid: For eye contact, flush with water; for skin contact, wash with soap and warm water.

Warranty Information:

  • Residential Use (Parts Only): A limited warranty is extended to the original purchaser and succeeding owners of the real property. It covers manufacturing defects for five years from the original purchase date for any part, and five years for the sealed motor-compressor. This warranty does not cover local transportation, service labor, diagnosis calls, refrigerant, or damages from unreasonable use or improper maintenance. It applies to products installed on or after 10/1/2001, manufactured after 1/1/2000.
  • Commercial Use (Parts Only): A limited warranty is extended to the original purchaser and succeeding owners of the real property. It covers manufacturing defects for one year from the original purchase date for any part, and the second through fifth year for the sealed motor-compressor. This warranty does not cover corrosion, erosion, deterioration, local transportation, service labor, diagnosis calls, or refrigerant. It applies to products installed on or after 10/1/2001, manufactured after 1/1/2000.
  • General Warranty Limitations: The warranty and liability are in lieu of all other warranties, express or implied, including merchantability and fitness for a particular use. The warrantor is not liable for incidental or consequential damages. Some states may not allow these limitations. Parts are provided through authorized service organizations.
