Overview

This document provides user instructions for the Palette table, designed by Jaime Hayon in 2015. It covers safety precautions, cleaning instructions, and maintenance tips for the various materials used in the table's construction.

Function Description

The Palette table is a piece of furniture designed for interior use. It serves as a surface for placing items and is intended to be a decorative and functional element in a living space. The table's design incorporates multiple materials and levels, suggesting a versatile surface for various objects.

Usage Features

The Palette table is designed for indoor use only. Users should handle the brass and marble table tops with care to prevent damage. Brass is susceptible to bending and scratching, while marble can break and is very heavy. It is crucial to immediately remove any spilled liquids from the table top, as they can penetrate the surface treatment and cause damage.

For the wooden table top, regular dusting with a soft cloth is recommended. For cleaning, a soft cloth wrung in a solution of water and a universal cleaning detergent should be used, following the wood grain. The surface should be dried immediately with a soft cloth, again following the wood grain. Abrasive cleaning products like steel wool or polish should be avoided. Additionally, lacquered and stained wood should not be exposed to excessive humidity or heat.

The marble plate, being made of natural marble, will exhibit variations in structure and color, which are not considered defects. The marble is treated with a sealer, but it is strongly advised to use a trivet and avoid placing glasses or cups with liquids directly on the marble to prevent permanent stains. For daily cleaning, a cleaning agent specifically developed for stone or marble is recommended. Re-sealing the marble every second month with an appropriate sealer is also highly recommended.

The brass plate is an alloy of copper and zinc with a fine-grid brushed surface, coated with Renaissance Wax. This wax provides a barrier against aging and oxidation, but over time, the brass will develop a unique and beautiful patina, which is a natural part of the product's life. Handling and use will gradually penetrate the protective wax barrier, and skin oils will accelerate oxidation, highlighting fingerprints and other wear. To maintain the wax barrier, occasional reapplication of Renaissance Wax is recommended. Despite the wax coating, brass is still sensitive to liquids, so it is strongly recommended to use a trivet and avoid placing glasses or cups with liquids directly on the brass plate to prevent permanent stains.

Maintenance Features

The Palette table requires specific maintenance routines depending on the material. For all parts, aggressive or abrasive cleaning detergents should never be used, as they can cause irreparable damage.

For the wooden table top, maintenance involves regular dusting and cleaning with a soft cloth dampened with a mild cleaning solution. It is important to dry the surface immediately and avoid abrasive cleaners or extreme environmental conditions.

The marble plate requires more specialized care. Due to its natural sensitivity, it should be cleaned with a stone-specific cleaning agent. The most critical maintenance aspect for marble is regular re-sealing, recommended every two months, using a sealer designed for stone or marble. This helps maintain its protective barrier against liquids and stains.

The brass plate's maintenance focuses on preserving its appearance and managing its natural patination process. To ensure the brass remains beautiful over time, it should be brushed with a fine-grit abrasive brushing pad, such as a 3M Scotch-Brite™ Hand Pad 7447. It is crucial to always wipe in the direction of the brushed surface's grain. After brushing, the product should be degreased using a non-aggressive, multipurpose cleaning solvent like CT1 Multi-Solve, applied with a clean soft cloth, again following the grain direction. Finally, Renaissance Wax should be reapplied to the entire surface, following the manufacturer's instructions and the direction of the brushed surface. It is explicitly stated that ammonia, products containing ammonia, or any other corrosive cleaning solutions should NOT be used on the brass, as they can damage it.

In summary, the Palette table, with its combination of powder-coated steel, ash or walnut veneer, polished marble, and brushed brass, requires careful handling and specific cleaning and maintenance practices for each material to ensure its longevity and aesthetic appeal. The instructions emphasize preventive measures, such as immediate spill removal and the use of trivets, alongside regular cleaning and protective treatments like re-sealing for marble and re-waxing for brass.
