MOUNTING THE WIRELESS
INDOOR SENSOR
NOTE: Pair sensor with Wi-Fi thermostat before mounting.
The sensor should be mounted:
• On an interior wall, in a frequently occupied space.
• Within 35 feet of thermostat.
• Approximately 5 feet above the oor.
• At least 18” from the outside wall.
Do not mount the sensor:
• Behind doors, in corners or other dead air spaces.
• In direct sunlight, near lighting xtures, or other
appliances that give off heat.
• On an outside or unconditioned area wall.
• In the ow of a supply register, in stairwells, or near
outside doors.
• On a wall with concealed pipes or ductwork.
PAIRING THE SENSOR TO THE
S86WMUPR THERMOSTAT
1. On the thermostat, navigate
to wireless sensor settings:
Menu > Settings > Installer
Settings (press and hold
UP and DOWN 5 seconds)
> Wireless Sensors > Add.
2. On the sensor, press and
hold the pairing button 5
seconds (the red indicator
on the front of the sensor
will start ashing).
3. On the thermostat, select Continue and wait for the
pairing process to complete.
LOW BATTERY DISPLAY
When the battery gets below 30% life left the sensor will
ash the LED once every 10 seconds. The connected/
paired device will display sensor low battery screen
(see your thermostat or connected device manual).

Usage Features:

• Mounting Guidelines: For optimal performance, the sensor should be mounted on an interior wall in a frequently occupied space, approximately 5 feet above the floor, and at least 18 inches from an outside wall. It should be within 35 feet of the thermostat. Areas to avoid for mounting include behind doors, in corners, dead air spaces, direct sunlight, near heat-emitting appliances (lighting fixtures, etc.), outside or unconditioned area walls, supply register airflow, stairwells, near outside doors, or walls with concealed pipes or ductwork.
• Pairing Process: The sensor must be paired with the Wi-Fi thermostat before mounting. The pairing process involves navigating to the wireless sensor settings on the thermostat (Menu > Settings > Installer Settings > Wireless Sensors > Add), then pressing and holding the pairing button on the sensor for 5 seconds until its red indicator starts flashing. The thermostat will then complete the pairing.
• LED Indicators:
  • Flashes once per second: Indicates connectivity status (pairing mode). The sensor exits pairing mode after 30 seconds.
  • Flashes once per 10 seconds: Indicates a low battery power status.
• Troubleshooting Connection Issues: If connection issues arise, users should first ensure the thermostat has the latest firmware by connecting it to a Wi-Fi network. Then, pressing and releasing the sensor's pairing button once will send updated information to the thermostat. Users can also check the RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) value in the thermostat's wireless sensor settings (Menu > Settings > Installer Settings > Wireless Sensors > View). An RSSI value greater than -70 dBm is recommended for strong connection strength. If the RSSI is less than -70 dBm, relocating the sensor is advised. For persistent issues with an RSSI greater than -70 dBm, AprilAire customer support can be contacted.
• Low Battery Display: When the battery life drops below 30%, the sensor's LED will flash once every 10 seconds. The connected/paired device (thermostat) will also display a low battery screen, alerting the user to replace the battery.

Maintenance Features:

• Battery Replacement: The battery replacement process is straightforward. The backing plate slides down to remove it from the sensor. The old CR2032 battery is then removed and replaced with a new lithium CR2032 type, after which the backing plate is reattached.
• Firmware Updates: The thermostat, when connected to a Wi-Fi network, will automatically install the latest firmware, which can improve sensor performance and compatibility.
