Overview

The Aqara Camera Hub G3 is a versatile smart home device designed to enhance security and provide convenient control over your environment. It functions as a camera hub, offering advanced surveillance capabilities, and also integrates as a central hub for other Aqara smart devices, allowing for comprehensive home automation.

Function Description

The primary function of the Aqara Camera Hub G3 is to provide video surveillance. It supports dual-band Wi-Fi networks (2.4/5GHz), ensuring flexible connectivity options. The camera is compatible with various Wi-Fi security protocols including WEP, WPA/WPA2, WPA3, and WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK, offering secure network integration.

A key feature of the G3 is its pan/tilt functionality, allowing users to remotely adjust the camera's viewing angle. The camera boasts a maximum horizontal rotation angle of 340 degrees and a maximum vertical rotation angle of 45 degrees (30 degrees up and 15 degrees down), providing extensive coverage of a room. This pan/tilt capability can be controlled via the Aqara Home app.

Beyond basic surveillance, the G3 incorporates advanced AI functions. It supports facial recognition, which can be used to trigger family alerts or execute automated actions when familiar or unfamiliar faces are detected. This feature allows for personalized security responses and smart home automations based on who is present. The camera also includes gesture recognition, enabling control through specific hand movements. However, it's important to note that enabling gesture recognition consumes more hardware resources, which may temporarily disable other AI functions like face, human shape, and pet recognition, as well as pan/tilt related automations. Disabling gesture recognition restores these other AI functions.

Another significant function of the Aqara Camera Hub G3 is its infrared remote-control capability. This allows the camera to act as a universal remote for various infrared-controlled appliances in your home. Users can add appliances to be controlled through the Aqara Home app, turning their smartphone into a remote controller. For appliances not listed in the supported devices, a customize feature is available, though this function is exclusively for appliances that support infrared control.

For audio communication, the camera hub supports 2-way audio. This feature can be initiated through the Aqara Home app by clicking the "phone" icon on the Aqara Camera Hub G3 interface, allowing users to have a voice call through the camera.

Storage of video footage is handled via a MicroSD card. The camera supports MicroSD cards up to 128GB and is compatible with exFAT and FAT32 formats. The MicroSD card slot is conveniently located at the bottom of the vertical pan/tilt mechanism, accessible by rotating the pan/tilt upward or by activating the sleep mode through the Aqara Home app. Videos recorded on the MicroSD card can still be saved even if there's a network disconnection, providing continuous local recording.

The Aqara Camera Hub G3 also integrates with Apple HomeKit, specifically supporting HomeKit Secure Video. This allows for secure video recording and viewing within the Apple Home app on iOS and macOS devices.

Usage Features

Connecting the Aqara Camera Hub G3 to your network involves scanning a QR code. For successful scanning, the terminal (e.g., mobile phone or tablet) used to display the QR code should have a minimum screen size of 4.7 inches. The Wi-Fi network name (WLAN) and password can be up to 32 ASCII characters long, including numbers, letters, and special symbols. The optimal scanning distance between the QR code and the camera is between 8 and 20 cm.

Facial recognition is enabled and managed through the Aqara Home app. Upon first use, the app guides users to add and synchronize face information to the camera. This face data is stored securely in the cloud server, associated with the family unit. Users can synchronize face information across multiple G3 cameras for batch operations and can also add or import faces via the app's settings.

The pan/tilt function can be controlled manually or through automated "cruise" settings. If the pan/tilt position is manually adjusted while the camera is powered on, it may lead to a disturbance in its position memory. To recalibrate, users can access the "one-button pan/tilt calibration" option in the Settings > Pan Tilt Settings menu within the Aqara Home app. The continuous working time for a single cruise is limited to 5 hours, after which the pan/tilt will automatically stop, and a notification will be sent to the app.

While the camera can record video to a MicroSD card without a network connection, remote viewing of these videos via the app is not possible until a network connection is re-established.

The camera supports multiple users viewing live video simultaneously. Although there's no strict limit on connected users, it is recommended that no more than 4 users watch videos concurrently to avoid consuming excessive processor resources, which could lead to real-time screen lag and delay.

For HomeKit Secure Video, a 200GB iCloud storage plan is required to support one camera, and a 2TB plan is needed for up to five cameras. Videos recorded through HomeKit Secure Video are stored in iCloud for up to 10 days and do not count towards your general iCloud storage space.

Maintenance Features

The Aqara Camera Hub G3 offers features that contribute to its ongoing usability and data management.

Regarding facial recognition data, users have the ability to proactively delete their face information. Furthermore, all uploaded face information will be cleared automatically after a device reset, ensuring privacy and data control.

The camera's ability to record locally to a MicroSD card even without a network connection is a key maintenance feature for continuous surveillance. This ensures that critical moments are captured regardless of internet availability.

The associated events feature allows for efficient retrieval of specific video footage. The camera can mark local video recordings with different events, such as motion detection or activation of a door/window sensor. This marking includes the time and location of the event within the video footage saved on the MicroSD card, simplifying the process of finding relevant clips. This feature can be configured through the Aqara Home app by navigating to Settings > More Settings > Alert Settings > Trigger Device > Color, and then saving the associated events.

When inserting a MicroSD card, it is crucial to power off the device first to prevent any potential data corruption or damage to the card or camera.

The pan/tilt calibration feature in the app serves as a maintenance tool to correct any position memory disturbances that might occur from manual adjustments, ensuring the camera's movement remains accurate.

It is important to note that while the camera can be connected to HomeKit, pan/tilt control functions through the Apple Home app are temporarily unavailable and are expected to be supported in a future software update. In the meantime, pan/tilt rotation can still be controlled using the Aqara Home app.
