Overview

The AQUA AQUARIUS Sand Filter for Swimming Pools is a filtration system designed for the treatment of water in pools used for human bathing. Its primary function is to guarantee filtration and to retain suspended matter that is not captured by traditional filter baskets located upstream in the system. The filter is manufactured to hold materials and suspended matter ranging from 0.4 mm to 0.8 mm in size. The operational principle involves trapping suspended matter as the treated water flows through the filtering material inside the filter.

Technical Specifications:

The filter is classified as pressure equipment according to the 97/23/CE PED directive, as it operates at pressures higher than 0.5 bar. It also conforms to UNI 10637:2015 and UNI EN 16713-1 standards.

The AQUARIUS sand filter models are available in various flow rates: 6 mc/h, 10 mc/h, 14 mc/h, 22 mc/h, and 35 mc/h.

  • Maximum Operating Pressure (MOP):
    • 6 mc/h, 10 mc/h, 14 mc/h, 22 mc/h models: 1.5 bar
    • 35 mc/h model: 2.5 bar
  • Resistance to Static Pressure:
    • 6 mc/h, 10 mc/h, 14 mc/h, 22 mc/h models: 2.145 bar
    • 35 mc/h model: 3.575 bar
  • Cyclic Test Pressure: 0-3 bar for all models.
  • Cyclic Test Duration: 10,000 cycles for all models.
  • Burst Pressure:
    • 6 mc/h, 10 mc/h, 14 mc/h, 22 mc/h models: 4 bar
    • 35 mc/h model: 3.75 bar

The fluid temperature for operation should be between +5°C (Tmin) and +40°C (Tmax). If the fluid temperature is expected to drop below freezing, the equipment must be isolated from the inlet system and emptied as specified in the maintenance section.

Usage Features:

The filter is designed to operate with aqueduct or ground water, seawater, and water mixed with sodium hypochlorite (in compliance with UNI 901:2002, with a maximum solution of 0.2 mg/l or 2 ppm).

Installation:

Installation should be carried out by authorized and qualified staff. The equipment connects to the pool system circuit using threaded pipe unions, with thread and diameter specifications provided in the components card. The pipe union exit should be connected by a glued smooth PVC pipe. During normal operation, the equipment should be placed in a covered, dry area, protected from direct sunlight and heat. The flow stream direction, indicated by arrows near the pipe unions, must be respected.

Refilling:

The filter is refilled by adding filtering material through the lid opening. Before refilling, the access hole of the center manifold pipe (located under the lid) must be closed, and the gasket removed from the filter's entry. The filtering material should be added slowly according to the specified quantities for each model:

  • 6 m³/h: 75 Kg
  • 10 m³/h: 100 Kg
  • 14 m³/h: 150 Kg
  • 22 m³/h: 250 Kg
  • 35 m³/h: 450 Kg

Recommended filter media include Quartz Sand and Milled Quartz (granulometry 0.4-0.8 mm, 1-2 mm, 1-3 mm, 3-6 mm), Zeolite (1-2.5 mm, 2.5-5 mm), Diatomaceous, Anthracite, and Activated Carbon (0.8-1.8 mm). After refilling the material, the closure used for the manifold pipe must be removed. The sand filter is then filled slowly with water until it overflows the filter's edge, ensuring the water spreads into all interstices of the filtering material. Care must be taken to prevent excess water from contacting nearby voltage or electric components.

Filter Closing:

To close the filter, ensure contact surfaces are clean. Place the gasket on the filter, then assemble the pressure gauge on the lid. Position the lid, secure it with the clamp, and tighten the two nuts using screws until the sides are coincident, avoiding over-tightening.

Starting:

Slowly open the valves on the connection pipe and check for any water leaks. If leaks occur, immediately close the filter valves and inspect the system.

Multi-Port Valve Functions:

The filter's multi-port valve (if included) allows for several operating positions:

  1. Filtration: Normal operating position, filtering treated water from entry to exit.
  2. Backwash: Used for cleaning the filter media by removing suspended matter caught during normal operation.
  3. Rinsing: Performed after backwash to remove any residual impurities inside the valve.
  4. Waste: Allows water to flow directly to waste (e.g., for emptying the pool).
  5. Circulation: Allows the system to operate without the filter, bypassing water directly to the exit.
  6. Lock: Closes all passages of the valve.
  7. Winter: An intermediate position for an empty system, preventing damage from freezing.

Important Note for Multi-Port Valve: The selection of the multi-port valve lever should only be done when the system is switched off and not in use.

Maintenance Features:

AQUA S.P.A. reserves the right to change or integrate the handbook to improve the product. The user is responsible for handling ordinary maintenance operations, which can also be executed by AQUA S.P.A. upon request. Maintenance operations, fault finding, and repairs are only permitted for qualified staff; unauthorized operations void the warranty.

Ordinary Maintenance Schedule (indicative for 8 hours/day, 365 days/year):

  • Pressure Control (Manometer): Daily. Pressure should be below 1 bar; if it exceeds 0.5 bar, perform a backwash.
  • Backwash (Multi-port valve position 2): Weekly. Cycle time maximum 5 minutes (check the clearness of the multi-port valve's glass).
  • Filtering Sand Level: Every 3 months. Refill with material until half of the filter's height. To do this, select the filter from the system, empty it by unscrewing the closing plug at the lower part, and remove the lid. After refilling, screw the drain plug back in.
  • Filtering Material Replacement: Yearly.

Draining:

Waste material must be disposed of in accordance with local governing laws. Partial or complete draining requires waste separation.

Prohibitions:

  • Do not install the equipment on a non-flat and non-horizontal surface.
  • Do not install accessories not authorized by AQUA S.P.A.
  • Do not use the equipment for operations not described in this handbook.
  • Do not use the equipment for pressures or performances higher than those mentioned in this handbook.
  • Do not allow non-qualified and non-trained staff to use the equipment.
  • Always use protection.
  • Do not change the equipment's original parts.

All maintenance operations performed on the filter should be recorded in the provided "Maintenance Operation Book."
