Condition Probably cause Corrective action
Low compression Weak or damaged valve springs. Replace.
Compression leak at cylinder head gasket. Replace gasket.
Sticking damaged piston ring. Replace piston rings.
Warn piston ring or cylinder. Overhaul engine.
(Trouble-shooting procedure)
Inject a small quantity of engine oil in spark plug hole, and then measure cylinder compression.
Compression increases. Malfunctioning cylinder or piston ring.
Compression does not change. Compression leaks from valve, cylinder head or head
gasket.
IMPROPER ENGINE Loose or cracked vacuum hoses or air hoses Check for loose connections or cracks.
