How to reinitialize my ARCHOS 55b Platinum ?
This process is recommended for your device if : it is frozen, it doesn’t
turn on or you are experiencing a software issue. It will allow you to
perform a low level format on your device. Thus all the data will be
deleted, you won't be able to retrieve them. We strongly recommend to
back them up first. Keep in mind that your device’s battery must be
charged enough to perform this operation.
Since Android™ 5.0, your device is linked to your Google™ account. If you
reset your device from the recovery menu (method 2), you will have to set
the same Google™ account you filled in the last wizard. If you reset your
device in order to resell it, please use the method 1.
1. If you can have access to the Android™ interface
a. Select the Settings app then select Backup & reset > Factory data
reset.
b. To delete music, photos and other user data, you must erase the
internal SD card. Tick Erase phone storage.
c. Select Reset phone and confirm.
2. If you can’t access the Android™ interface
a. Turn off the device by using the ON/OFF button.
b. Continually press the ON/OFF button while repeatedly pressing the
Volume + button until the bootlogo is displayed then release the
ON/OFF button while you keep pressing repeatedly the Volume +
button.
c. When the green robot is displayed, hold down the ON/OFF button
again and press the Volume + button once to display the Android
system recovery menu.
If you failed to access to the recovery menu, please

Overview

This document outlines the procedure for reinitializing an ARCHOS 55b Platinum device, a process often referred to as a factory reset or hard reset. The primary function of this procedure is to address software issues, unresponsiveness (frozen device), or failure to power on correctly. It performs a low-level format, which effectively deletes all data on the device, returning it to its original factory state. This is a critical function for troubleshooting and preparing the device for resale.

Important Considerations Before Reinitialization:

  • Data Loss: The reinitialization process will permanently delete all user data, including music, photos, applications, and other files stored on the internal SD card. It is explicitly stated that data will not be retrievable after this operation. Therefore, backing up all important data before proceeding is strongly recommended.
  • Battery Charge: The device's battery must be sufficiently charged to complete the reinitialization process. This is a crucial technical specification for ensuring the operation runs smoothly without interruption, which could potentially brick the device.
  • Google Account Linkage (Android™ 5.0 and later): For devices running Android™ 5.0 or newer, the device is linked to a Google™ account. If the reset is performed via the recovery menu (Method 2), the same Google™ account used during the initial setup wizard will be required to set up the device again after the reset. This is an important security feature designed to prevent unauthorized use of a stolen or lost device. If the device is being reset for resale, Method 1 (resetting from within the Android™ interface) is recommended, as it typically allows for the removal of the Google account linkage more easily.

Reinitialization Methods:

The document provides two distinct methods for reinitializing the ARCHOS 55b Platinum, depending on whether the user can access the Android™ interface.

Method 1: If you can access the Android™ interface

This method is the preferred approach when the device is functional enough to navigate through its operating system.

  • Usage Feature: This method leverages the standard Android™ settings menu for a software-initiated reset.
  • Steps:
    1. Navigate to Settings: Select the "Settings" application on the device.
    2. Access Backup & reset: Within the Settings menu, locate and select "Backup & reset."
    3. Initiate Factory data reset: Choose "Factory data reset."
    4. Erase Internal SD Card (Optional but Recommended): To ensure all user data, including music, photos, and other files, are completely removed, tick the "Erase phone storage" option. This is a maintenance feature that ensures a clean slate.
    5. Confirm Reset: Select "Reset phone" and then confirm the action when prompted.

Method 2: If you can't access the Android™ interface

This method is designed for situations where the device is frozen, won't boot into Android™, or is otherwise unresponsive, preventing access to the standard settings menu. This typically involves booting into a "recovery mode" or "bootloader."

  • Usage Feature: This method utilizes physical button combinations to force the device into a special diagnostic mode, bypassing the normal Android™ boot process.
  • Steps:
    1. Power Off: Turn off the device using the ON/OFF button. This is a crucial first step to ensure a clean boot into recovery.
    2. Enter Recovery Mode (Button Combination):
      • Continually press the ON/OFF button.
      • While holding the ON/OFF button, repeatedly press the Volume + button.
      • Continue this combination until the boot logo is displayed.
      • Once the boot logo appears, release the ON/OFF button but continue repeatedly pressing the Volume + button. This specific timing and sequence are critical technical specifications for accessing the recovery menu.
    3. Display Green Robot: When a green robot (the Android™ mascot) is displayed on the screen, hold down the ON/OFF button again.
    4. Access Recovery Menu: While holding the ON/OFF button, press the Volume + button once. This action should then display the Android™ recovery menu. If the system is stuck on the green robot, the user is instructed to start again from the beginning of Method 2.

Once in the recovery menu (accessed via Method 2), the following steps are used:

  • Navigation: Use the Volume buttons (Volume + and Volume -) to move up and down through the menu options. This is a key usage feature for interacting with the recovery interface, which typically lacks touch screen functionality.
  • Validation/Selection: Use the ON/OFF button to select or validate the highlighted option.

Recovery Menu Steps (Method 2 continued):

  1. Select "Wipe data/factory reset": Navigate to this option using the Volume buttons and select it with the ON/OFF button. This is the core maintenance feature for performing the factory reset.
  2. Confirm Data Deletion: Select "Yes -- delete all user data" and validate. This step serves as a final confirmation of the irreversible data deletion.
  3. Reboot System: After the data wiping process is complete, select "Reboot system now" and validate. This will restart the device, which will then boot into the Android™ setup wizard as if it were a new device.
