Overview

This document serves as an installation, operation, and maintenance manual for Arctic Air Refrigerated Counter-Top Prep units, designed for commercial use. The manual provides comprehensive guidance to ensure optimal performance, longevity, and safe operation of the appliance.

Function Description

The Arctic Air Refrigerated Counter-Top Prep unit is a commercial refrigeration appliance primarily designed for storing and displaying packaged food products. Its core function is to maintain a consistent, cool temperature, ensuring that foodstuffs remain fresh and safe for consumption. The unit features a counter-top design, making it suitable for use in kitchens, delis, and other food service establishments where ingredients need to be kept chilled and readily accessible. The appliance is equipped with multiple bays for containers, allowing for organized storage of various food items. A glass assembly, which is an optional feature, can be installed to enclose the top section, providing a clear view of the contents while maintaining temperature control and hygiene. This design is particularly beneficial for prep areas where ingredients are frequently accessed and replenished. The refrigeration system works to cool the interior, and the unit is designed to operate efficiently when its pan bays are full, even if some pans are empty, to maximize cooling effectiveness.

Usage Features

The refrigerated counter-top prep unit is designed for straightforward operation and user convenience. Before initial use, it is crucial to allow the unit to stand upright for approximately 12 hours if it has been stored or moved in a non-upright position, to allow the refrigerant to settle. The appliance should be positioned on a flat, stable surface, maintaining a minimum distance of 20cm (7 inches) from walls or other objects to ensure adequate ventilation, with increased distance recommended if a heat source is nearby. Prior to its first use, the interior of the appliance should be cleaned with soapy water.

To turn on the unit, the door(s) must be closed, the power switch set to 'O' (off) at the appliance, and then the unit plugged into a socket and switched on at the wall. Finally, the power switch on the appliance should be set to 'I' (on), at which point the current internal temperature will be displayed. For best results, foodstuffs should only be stored in the appliance once it has reached its correct operating temperature. It is important to keep the pan bays full at all times, as empty bays can significantly reduce the appliance's efficiency. The internal fans should never be obstructed to ensure proper air circulation and cooling.

The optional glass assembly enhances the unit's functionality by providing a protective and visually appealing enclosure. The installation process for the glass panels involves screwing collars to the rim of the appliance, ensuring the grub screw holes face inwards. Side panels are then slotted into the collars, followed by the rear panel, with grub screws used to secure them. Plastic plugs are inserted into the holes, and brackets are screwed to the inside of each pane using bolt assemblies, ensuring the short end of the bolt assembly is on the outside. Finally, the top panel is placed onto the brackets, aligned with the holes, and secured with plugs and bolt assemblies. This glass enclosure helps maintain a stable temperature for the stored food and offers a hygienic barrier.

The unit is intended for commercial use only, and its warranty is void if used in non-commercial applications. It is crucial to store only foodstuffs in the appliance and avoid using it for medical supplies or placing other electrical appliances, such as heaters or ice-cream makers, inside. The appliance should always be carried, stored, and handled in a vertical position, holding it by its base.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance is essential for the optimal performance and longevity of the Arctic Air Refrigerated Counter-Top Prep unit. The manual outlines several key maintenance procedures.

Before any cleaning or maintenance, the appliance must be switched off and disconnected from the power supply. The interior of the appliance should be cleaned as often as possible using non-abrasive cleaning agents to avoid leaving harmful residues. The door seal should be cleaned with water only, and the entire unit should always be wiped dry after cleaning. When cleaning the rear of the appliance, caution should be exercised due to potentially sharp edges.

Periodically cleaning the condenser is a mandatory maintenance task, and failure to do so will void the warranty. It is recommended that a qualified agent or technician perform this cleaning. Regular condenser cleaning ensures efficient operation of the refrigeration system, preventing overheating and potential damage.

The unit also features a manual defrost function. While the manual does not detail the steps for manual defrost, its inclusion implies that the appliance may require periodic manual defrosting in addition to any automatic defrost cycles it might have, to prevent ice buildup and maintain cooling efficiency.

Troubleshooting guidance is provided to help users address common issues. For instance, if the appliance is not working, users are advised to check if it is switched on, if the plug and lead are damaged, or if the fuse has blown. If the appliance turns on but the temperature is too high or low, potential causes include the unit being near a heat source, obstructed airflow to the condenser, high ambient temperature, unsuitable foodstuffs being stored, or an overloaded appliance. Solutions range from checking connections and replacing fuses to relocating the refrigerator, increasing ventilation, removing hot foodstuffs, or reducing the amount of food stored. Any repairs, especially those involving damaged power cords or internal wiring faults, should be carried out by a service agent or a recommended qualified technician to avoid hazards.

The appliance is designed with safety in mind, and users are advised to consult local and national standards for health and safety, fire precautions, and electrical wiring regulations. All packaging should be kept away from children and disposed of according to local authority regulations. If the power cord is damaged, it must be replaced by a qualified technician.

Disposal of the refrigeration product must be done by specialist companies that remove and recycle all gasses, metal, and plastic components, in accordance with US regulations. Local waste collection authorities can provide advice on disposal.

The appliance is supplied with a 3-pin, moulded BS1363 plug and lead with a 13 amp fuse. The wiring is standard: live wire (brown) to terminal L, neutral wire (blue) to terminal N, and earth wire (green/yellow) to terminal E. All appliances must be earthed using a dedicated earthing circuit. Electrical isolation points must remain clear of obstructions for emergency disconnection.
