Overview

This document is an operator's manual for an Ariens Automatic Tractor, model 936083, a 42" automatic tractor. It provides comprehensive information on safe operation, assembly, maintenance, troubleshooting, and warranty.

Function Description

The Ariens Automatic Tractor is a ride-on lawn mower designed for cutting grass and can be equipped with various attachments. Its primary function is to provide efficient and dependable lawn maintenance. The tractor features an internal combustion engine, an automatic transmission, and a cutting deck with blades. It is designed for use by responsible adults familiar with its operation.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Model: 936083 42" Automatic Tractor
  • Gasoline Capacity and Type: 1.50 Gallons (5.67 L) Unleaded Regular. Gasoline containing up to 10% ethanol (E10) or up to 10% MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether) is acceptable. Use of gasoline exceeding 10% ethanol or 10% MTBE will void the product warranty.
  • Oil Type (API: SG-SL): SAE 30 (above 32°F/0°C), SAE 5W30 (below 32°F/0°C).
  • Oil Capacity: 56 oz. (1.65 L) with filter, 48 oz. (1.4 L) without filter.
  • Spark Plug: Champion RC12YC, Gap: .030" (0.76 mm).
  • Charging System: 3 Amps Battery, 5 Amps Headlights.
  • Battery: Amp/Hr: 28, Min. CCA: 230, Case Size: U1R.
  • Blade Bolt Torque: 45-55 FT. LBS. (62-75 Nm).
  • Cutting Height Range: Approximately 1 to 4" (25.4 to 101.6 mm).
  • Maximum Recommended Operation Angle (Loading/Unloading): 15°.
  • Maximum Towing Speed: 2 mph (3.2 km/h).

Usage Features

The tractor is equipped with several controls and systems for operation:

  • Attachment Lift Lever (A): Used to raise and lower the mower or other attachments.
  • Brake Pedal (B): Used for braking and starting the engine.
  • Parking Brake (C): Locks the clutch/brake pedal in the brake position. An operator presence sensing switch ensures the engine shuts off if the operator leaves the seat without setting the parking brake.
  • Throttle/Choke Control (D): Used for starting and controlling engine speed. Full speed (fast) is recommended for best mower performance.
  • Attachment Clutch Lever (E): Engages the mower blades or other attachments.
  • Ignition Switch (F): Used for starting and stopping the engine.
  • Reverse Operation System (ROS) "ON" Position (G): Allows operation of the mower or other powered attachment while in reverse. This system is designed to prevent the engine from shutting off when backing up with the attachment clutch engaged, but its use is strongly discouraged unless absolutely necessary.
  • Light Switch (H): Turns headlights on and off.
  • Forward Drive Pedal (K): Used for forward movement.
  • Reverse Drive Pedal (L): Used for reverse movement.
  • Freewheel Control (M): Disengages the transmission for pushing or slowly towing the tractor with the engine off.
  • Gauge Wheels: Adjustable to keep the deck slightly off the ground at the desired cutting height, preventing scalping.
  • Seat Adjustment: The seat can be adjusted for operator comfort by grasping the adjustment handle, pulling up, sliding the seat to the desired position, and releasing the handle.

Mowing Tips:

  • Mow up and down slopes, not across.
  • Avoid wet grass, holes, ruts, bumps, rocks, or other hidden objects.
  • Choose a low ground speed and avoid stopping or shifting on slopes.
  • Do not mow in reverse unless absolutely necessary.
  • Operate the engine at full throttle for best mowing performance.
  • For tall grass (over 6 inches), mow twice, with the first cut relatively high.
  • The left-hand side of the mower should be used for trimming.
  • Drive so clippings are discharged onto the cut area for even distribution.
  • When mowing large areas, start by turning right to discharge clippings away from obstacles, then mow in the opposite direction.

Maintenance Features

The manual outlines a detailed maintenance schedule and procedures for various components:

  • Tractor:

    • Brake Operation: Check and adjust if the tractor requires more than five feet (1.5 m) to stop at highest speed.
    • Tires: Maintain proper air pressure (PSI shown on tires) and keep them free of gasoline, oil, or insect control chemicals.
    • Operator Presence System and ROS: Regularly check for proper functioning.
    • Blade Care: Keep blades sharp; replace bent or damaged blades. Blade removal involves turning the blade bolt counterclockwise and installing new blades with "GRASS SIDE" facing the ground, ensuring the center hole aligns with the mandrel star.
    • Battery: Periodic charging (6-10 amperes for 1 hour) is recommended. Keep terminals clean and tight. The original equipment battery is maintenance-free.
    • V-Belts: Check for deterioration and wear after 100 hours of operation; replace if necessary.
    • Transaxle: Sealed at the factory; fluid maintenance is not required unless leaks or servicing are needed.
    • Mower Deck Levelness: Check and adjust side-to-side and front-to-back for best cutting results. The front tip of the blade should be 1/8" to 1/2" (3.1 to 12.7 mm) lower than the rear tip.
    • Mower Blade Drive Belt: Replaceable without tools.
    • Motion Drive Belt: Replacement procedure detailed in the manual.
    • Wheels: Removal involves blocking the axle, removing the axle cover, retaining ring, and washers. Rear wheels have a square key.
    • Front Wheel Toe-in/Camber: Factory set and not adjustable.
    • Headlight Bulb: Replaceable by pulling the bulb holder out of the grill.
    • Interlocks and Relays: Check wiring for loose or damaged connections.
    • Fuse: Replace with a 20 amp automotive-type plug-in fuse.
    • Deck Washout Port: Utilize after each use for cleaning the mower deck. Connect a garden hose to the nozzle adapter, attach it to the washout port, turn on water, start the engine, and engage the cutting deck.
  • Engine:

    • Lubrication: Use high-quality detergent oil (API SG-SL) with appropriate SAE viscosity grade for expected operating temperatures. Change oil every 50 hours or annually.
    • Oil Filter: Replace every season or every other oil change (if used more than 100 hours).
    • Air Filter: Service more often in dusty conditions.
    • Air Screen: Clean regularly to prevent overheating.
    • Spark Plugs: Replace at the beginning of each mowing season or every 100 hours.
    • Muffler: Inspect and replace if corroded.
    • In-Line Fuel Filter: Replace once each season.
    • Engine Cooling System: Clean debris from the blower housing to prevent overheating.

Storage:

  • Remove the mower for winter storage.
  • Clean the entire tractor thoroughly.
  • Inspect and replace belts, lubricate, ensure fasteners are secure, and touch up painted surfaces.
  • Battery: Fully charge, disconnect cables, and clean terminals. Store off concrete.
  • Fuel System: Empty the fuel tank, run the engine until fuel lines and carburetor are empty, or use a fuel stabilizer. Do not use engine or carburetor cleaner products in the fuel tank.
  • Engine Oil: Drain warm oil and replace with clean engine oil.
  • Cylinder(s): Remove spark plug(s), pour one ounce of oil into cylinder(s), turn the ignition key to "START" for a few seconds, and replace with new spark plug(s).
  • Store the tractor indoors and cover it with a suitable protective cover that does not retain moisture. Do not cover while the engine and exhaust areas are warm.
