Overview

The PM84x Series 13.8 V DC Switch Mode Power Supplies are high-efficiency, cost-effective power supply units designed for use in Intruder, Access Control, and general Security applications. These units provide a regulated 13.8 V DC output, delivering continuous full-rated current to the connected load while also supplying additional current for charging a standby battery. A key feature for ensuring maximum battery life is the integrated deep discharge protection, which prevents premature battery failure during extended standby operation (dependent on model).

The power supplies offer universal mains input voltage (90-264 V AC), making them suitable for use across a wide geographical area. The highly efficient switch mode design contributes to low operating costs, reduced heat generation, and a compact physical size, which in turn increases available space for additional PCBs or cables within the enclosure. The modular construction of the units simplifies both maintenance and installation processes.

Key Features:

  • Continuous Full Rated Current: Delivers a steady current to the connected load.
  • Standby Battery Charging: Provides additional current specifically for charging a standby battery.
  • Battery Deep Discharge Protection: Prevents premature battery failure during extended standby operation (model-dependent).
  • Universal Mains Input: Accepts a wide range of AC input voltages (90-264 V AC).
  • Volt-Free Contact Signaling: Includes volt-free contacts to signal mains failure, as well as battery and output faults (model-dependent).
  • High Efficiency Electronics: Contributes to reduced running costs and lower operating temperatures.
  • Installer Safe Design: All high voltage electronics are fully shrouded for enhanced safety during installation.
  • Modular Construction: Facilitates ease of maintenance and installation.
  • Full Electronic Short Circuit and Overload Protection: Protects the load output under mains operation.
  • Mains Transient Protection Circuit: Safeguards against mains voltage fluctuations.
  • Lid Opening Tamper Detection: Detects when the enclosure lid is opened.
  • Removal from Mounting Tamper Detection: Signals if the unit is removed from its mounting (model-dependent).
  • LED Indicators: Features a green "Mains Present" LED and a red "Fault" LED for quick status checks.

Usage Features:

The unit is designed for permanent connection and is not suitable for external installation. It must be earthed, and an external disconnect device should be OFF before installation.

  • Mounting: Securely mount in the correct orientation, ensuring a minimum clearance of 100mm all around for proper ventilation. Cables should be routed through different knockouts/entry holes using UL94 HB rated bushes and cable glands.
  • Mains Power-up: Connect the correctly rated mains cable (minimum 0.5 mm² [3 A], 300/500 V AC) and secure with cable ties. After applying mains power, verify 13.8 V DC on load outputs and confirm the green Mains LED is on.
  • Load Output: Connect the correctly rated load cable, observing polarity, and secure with cable ties. After applying mains power, confirm the green Mains LED is on. A flashing or steady red Fault LED is normal if no battery is connected.
  • Standby Battery Connection: Attach the supplied battery cables to the terminal block and battery, ensuring correct polarity (+ve to red lead, -ve to black lead). Mount the battery to avoid all lid fixing screws. After applying mains power, confirm the green Mains LED is on and no fault indication on the red LED. Verify that EPS and GEN Fault contacts are CLOSED.
  • Tamper (PM844-A Only): Connect the tamper switch to the appropriate inputs of the Control & Indicating Equipment (CIE). The tamper switch should be CLOSED when the lid/cover is closed and secured, and OPEN when the lid/cover is open or screws are removed. A fine adjustment screw allows alignment of the set position indicator with the set point.

Maintenance Features:

This unit is intended for use by Service Personnel only, with no user-serviceable parts inside.

  • LED Indicators: The green Mains LED illuminates when mains supply is present. The red Fault LED illuminates (flash or steady) and corresponding fault signal contacts (EPS or GEN) open in the event of a fault.
  • Routine Maintenance: No regular maintenance is required beyond periodic testing and replacement of the standby battery. Battery manufacturer's documentation should be consulted to determine typical battery life and schedule replacements.
  • Troubleshooting: If the PSU output fails, the cause (e.g., short circuit load) should be investigated and rectified before restoring power. Fuses may need replacement; ensure correct fuse rating and type.
  • Battery Replacement: Risk of explosion if the battery is replaced by an incorrect type. Used batteries must be disposed of according to the battery manufacturer's instructions and all local/national regulations.
  • Recycling: The product packaging is recyclable. The product itself, including the battery, must be disposed of according to WEEE and battery directives respectively, returning to local suppliers or designated collection points.
