Do you have a question about the AsahiKASEI AK4493 and is the answer not in the manual?
The AK4493 is a new generation Premium 32-bit 2-channel Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC) featuring VELVET SOUND™ technology, designed to achieve industry-leading low distortion characteristics. This device is ideal for high-resolution audio source playback in various applications such as AV receivers, CD/SACD players, network audios, USB DACs, USB headphones, sound plates/bars, measurement equipment, control systems, IC recorders, Bluetooth headphones, and HD audio/voice conference systems.
The AK4493 converts either PCM or DSD data to an analog signal and supports an external digital filter interface. In PCM mode, data is input via BICK, LRCK, and SDATA pins. In DSD mode, data is input via DCLK, DSDL, and DSDR pins. For the external digital filter (EXDF) mode, data is input via BCK, DINL, DINR, and WCK pins. The device supports PCM mode in Pin Control Mode.
The AK4493 offers both manual and automatic settings for switching to DSD mode. In manual setting mode (ADPE bit = “0”), D/A conversion mode switching between PCM and DSD is executed by the DP bit. This switching must occur during the reset state by setting the RSTN bit to “0” and takes 2/fs to 3/fs for data mode switching. The external digital filter interface is selected by setting the DP bit to “0” and EXDF bit to “1”. Internal/external digital filter switching by the EXDF bit must be executed during reset by the RSTN bit to “0” and takes 2k/fs to 3k/fs. In Auto Setting Mode (ADPE bit = “1”), the DP bit setting is ignored, and the AK4493 monitors input signals on pin 4 to select PCM or DSD mode when EXDF bit = “0”, and pin 6 to select EXDF or DSD mode when EXDF bit = “1”.
The device includes channel-independent digital output volumes (ATTL/R) with 256 levels at 0.5dB steps, including MUTE. Volume changes are executed in soft transition to prevent switching noise. It can attenuate input data from 0dB to -127dB and MUTE when the output signal level is 0dB (ATTL/R[7:0] bits = “FFH”). The transition time for digital output volume is set by ATS[1:0] bits.
The AK4493 features a gain adjustment function, allowing the analog output amplitude to be adjusted by GC[2:0] bits. It also has a channel-independent zero detection function, with a zero detection flag output from the DZFL/R pin when the DZFE bit = “1” and DDMOE bit = “0”. The polarity of the detection flag can be selected by the DZFB bit. The zero detect function can be disabled by setting DZFE bit = “0” or when Volume Bypass is selected in DSD mode.
The device includes an LR Channel Output Signal Select and Phase Inversion Function. In register control mode, input and output combinations can be changed by MONO and SELLR bits, and the output signal phase can be inverted by INVL and INVR bits. In pin control mode, the phase of the R channel output can be inverted by setting the INVR pin.
A Sound Quality Adjustment Function is available, controlled by SC[2:0] bits. The analog characteristics are specified and guaranteed in Setting 1 and Setting 5 combined, which is fixed in Pin Control Mode.
The AK4493 also features an independent full-scale detection function for each channel in DSD mode. The analog output signal can be muted after detecting a full-scale signal by setting the DDM bit to “1”. If the input data of either Lch or Rch is continuously "H" or "L" for a period set by DDMT[1:0] bits, the AK4493 enters full-scale detection state, and the corresponding DML or DMR bit becomes "1".
An Automatic Mode Switching Function (PCM/EXDF ⇔ DSD Mode) is available by setting ADPE bit = “1”. The AK4493 detects DSD or PCM/EXDF mode from input signals on the BICK/BCK/DCLK, LRCK/DSDR, and WCK pins. The result of automatic mode detection can be read out by the ADP bit.
