SAFETY INFORMATION
Working in the vicinity of lead-acid battery is DANGEROUS due to EXPLOSIVE GASES generated by
the battery which can be ignited by a spark, cigarette or flame and blow the battery apart,
forcefully showering the area with battery pieces and acid.
To reduce the chance of exploding batteries follow instructions by manufacturers of batteries as
well as these instructions.
IN CASE OF ACCIDENT RINSE EYES WITH CLEAN WATER AT LEAST 5 MINUTES AND SEE A
DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY. NEVER USE EYE DROPS OR OTHER MEDICATION UNLESS DIRECTED BY
A DOCTOR.
When around lead-acid batteries wear eye protection and avoid touching or rubbing the battery as
well as clothing, skin and eyes. NEVER smoke, have an open flame or sparks near battery. Have
plenty of ventilation and keep your face as far as possible from the battery. Undercharged lead-
acid batteries will freeze during cold weather. Never test or charge a frozen battery. Do not allow

Overview

The document describes the Associated Equipment Corporation Model 6029 Battery Tester, a device designed to evaluate the condition of 12-volt lead-acid batteries and their associated charging and starting systems.

Function Description

The Model 6029 Battery Tester performs three primary functions:

  1. Battery Load Test: This test assesses the battery's ability to crank an engine by drawing current from the battery and measuring its voltage level under load. A good battery maintains a relatively steady voltage, while a defective battery shows a rapid voltage drop.
  2. Charging Voltage Test (12 Volt Only): This test measures the output voltage of the alternator/regulator to detect under or overcharging, which can lead to poor battery performance and a shortened lifespan.
  3. Starter Motor Test (12 Volt Vehicles): This test identifies excessive starter current draw, which can make starting difficult and reduce battery life.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Model: 6029
  • Voltage Compatibility: 12-volt systems for Charging Voltage Test and Starter Motor Test. The Battery Load Test appears to be applicable to both 6-volt and 12-volt batteries based on the mention of 12.4 (6.2) volts for state of charge.
  • Load Test Duration: 10 seconds.
  • Load Test Duty Cycle: Maximum of 3 load tests in a 5-minute period, with a 1-minute cool-down period between tests to prevent incorrect readings and unit damage.
  • CCA Estimation Guidelines:
    • Small (4 cyl): ~300 CCA
    • Medium (6 cyl): ~400 CCA
    • Large (8 cyl): ~500 CCA

Usage Features

General Safety Information:

  • Explosive Gases: Working near lead-acid batteries is dangerous due to explosive gases that can be ignited by sparks, cigarettes, or flames, potentially causing the battery to explode and shower the area with acid and debris.
  • Eye Protection: Always wear eye protection.
  • Contact Avoidance: Avoid touching or rubbing the battery, clothing, skin, and eyes.
  • No Smoking/Flames/Sparks: Never smoke, have an open flame, or create sparks near the battery.
  • Ventilation: Ensure plenty of ventilation and keep your face away from the battery.
  • Frozen Batteries: Never test or charge a frozen battery, as undercharged lead-acid batteries can freeze in cold weather.
  • Tool Handling: Do not allow tools to drop onto or lay on the battery.
  • Accident Protocol: In case of acid contact, rinse eyes with clean water for at least 5 minutes and seek immediate medical attention. Do not use eye drops or other medication unless directed by a doctor.

Battery Load Test Procedure:

  1. Turn off the engine, accessories, and battery test equipment.
  2. Connect the negative (black) clamp to the negative battery post and the positive (red) clamp to the positive battery post. "Rock" clamps to ensure a good electrical connection. Use adapters for side terminals.
  3. The tester's meter will indicate the battery's STATE OF CHARGE. If the charge is below 12.4 volts (or 6.2 volts for a 6V battery), recharge the battery before load testing. If recharging doesn't bring the voltage up, the battery is defective. If the needle is off scale to the left, check for loose or reversed clamps.
  4. Note the battery's Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) rating. If unknown, use the provided estimation guidelines.
  5. Depress the load switch for 10 seconds.
  6. Read the meter at the end of 10 seconds with the switch still depressed. Refer to the LOAD TEST ANALYSIS chart.

Compensating for Low Temperatures: Low temperatures degrade battery performance. Adjust CCA readings based on temperature:

  • 50°F: Read 100 CCA less than battery rating.
  • 30°F: Read 200 CCA less than battery rating.
  • 10°F: Read 300 CCA less than battery rating.

Load Test Analysis Chart:

  • Needle in temperature-corrected green scale: Battery is GOOD.
  • Little if any movement, needle in temperature-corrected yellow scale: Battery is QUESTIONABLE. RECHARGE AND RETEST.
  • Noticeable meter movement and/or needle in temperature-corrected red scale: Battery is DEFECTIVE. REPLACE.

Charging Voltage Test Procedure (12 Volt Only):

  1. Ensure the engine is at normal operating temperature.
  2. Connect tester clamps to the battery as described in the Battery Load Test steps.
  3. Turn off all lights and accessories. Operate the engine at a fast idle (approx. 1500 RPM).
  4. Do not operate the tester's load switch.
  5. Read the meter voltage. The needle should be in the Green (OK) area of the Charging System scale.
  6. Turn on high beam lights and the blower on high. The meter needle should remain in the Green (OK) area.
  7. If the meter needle goes to the Red (LO or HI) areas, the charging system is not operating correctly.

Troubleshooting Hints (Charging Voltage Test):

  • LO Voltage: Possible causes include a loose belt, defective voltage regulator, or defective alternator.
  • HI Voltage: Possible causes include loose or corroded connections or a defective voltage regulator.

Starter Motor Test Procedure (12 Volt Vehicles):

  1. Ensure the engine is at normal operating temperature.
  2. Connect tester clamps to the battery as described in the Battery Load Test steps.
  3. Disable the ignition to prevent the car from starting.
  4. Crank the engine and note the voltage reading during cranking.
  5. A meter reading of 9 volts or less indicates excessive current draw, possibly due to bad connections, a failing starter motor, or a battery too small for the vehicle's requirements.
