Overview

The Peterson 6700B is a portable horizontal grinder designed to process various organic materials into a customer-specified size. It is equipped with material handling assemblies for feeding, grinding, and discharging material, supported by an engine, clutch, hydraulic, and electronic control systems.

Function Description:

The 6700B grinder is designed to reduce construction and demolition debris, land clearing slash, urban wood waste, scrap lumber and pallets, tree stumps, lumber mill yard waste, wet leaves and grass, and other green waste. Materials are fed into the machine, where a rotor grinds them against an anvil and through grates. The grinding process occurs in three stages: raw material compression and breakdown by rotor bits, further reduction by grinding through the anvil gap, and final reduction by grinding through the grates.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Engine: Caterpillar C27 diesel engine (optional C32 available).
  • Hydraulic Clutch: HP600S hydraulic clutch, mounted directly to the engine drive shaft, transfers engine power to the rotor drive belts.
  • Hydraulic System: Powers feed chain, compression roll, discharge conveyor, and cooling fans. Includes a main hydraulic oil tank and a clutch oil tank.
  • Compression Roll Speed Ratio: Typically 1.5 times faster than the feed chain speed, adjustable via the display screen.
  • Discharge Conveyor Speed: Adjustable in three 100 ft/min (30 m/min) increments: 500 ft/min (152 m/min), 600 ft/min (182 m/min), and 700 ft/min (213 m/min).
  • Water Sprayer System: Self-contained, gasoline-powered, high-pressure system with a 150-gallon (550 liters) tank, 25 ft (8 m) maximum solid stream spray distance, 50 ft (15 m) 1-inch diameter spray hose, and a minimum full tank discharge time of 12 minutes. Nozzle adjusts from solid stream to fog.
  • Air Bags (Optional): Provides closer control of anvil movement in float mode, with pressure adjustable from 5 to 20 psi (0.34 to 1.38 bar).
  • Dimensions (Transport): Width: 11 ft 9 in. (3.4 m); Length (A): 44 ft 1/2 in. (13.4 m); Height (C): 13 ft 1 in. (3.9 m).
  • Weights (Transport): Total machine weight: 90,000 lb (40,800 kg); Tridem weight: 58,000 lb (26,300 kg); Tridem weight per axle: 19,333 lb (8,770 kg); Fifth-wheel weight: 32,000 lb (14,500 kg).

Usage Features:

  • Control Panel: Main operating controls are mounted in a lockable cabinet on the radiator (left) side of the machine, operated from ground level. Includes an Emergency Stop button.
  • Remote Transmitter: Allows remote control of many machine functions, can be carried by hand or in a separate vehicle, and has strong magnets for attachment to metal surfaces. Features dual-function buttons with white and yellow labels, and a green button to switch between functions.
  • Automatic Feed Control (Peterson Adaptive Control System): Varies feed system speed and compression roll height to optimize engine power. Includes features like Auto Down Pressure, Anti-Bridge, and Compression Roll Stall Bump.
  • Impact Release System (IRS): Allows the anvil housing to pivot upward when an ungrindable object strikes the anvil, preventing damage. Can be enabled or disabled (float mode). If tripped, the system idles the engine, triggers an alarm, and stops/reverses the feed system.
  • Land Clearing Mode: Increases the compression roll height settings by 15 in. (38 cm) to accommodate large stumps, with an on-screen warning to keep the hazard zone clear.
  • Water Sprinkler System: Suppresses dust during grinding, using an external water source.
  • Magnetic Head Pulley (Optional): Removes scrap iron from processed material before discharge, directing it to a separate chute. It is powerful, permanent, and requires no operator controls.
  • Engine Start/Stop: Engine starts by rotating and holding the ENGINE switch for 3 seconds. Normal shutdown involves stopping material feed, running hopper and conveyors empty, idling the engine, disengaging the clutch, and turning off the discharge conveyor.
  • Display Screens: The Peterson Adaptive Control System provides various display screens for system settings and machine operation monitoring, including Machine Status, Engine Information, Hydraulic System, Electrical Information, Feed System, Maintenance, and Setup menus.

Maintenance Features:

  • Daily Checks for Wear: Regular inspection of feed system parts (feed chain link pins, alignment, hopper walls, tail deck plate, upper chain deck, compression roll seals, feed plate) and grinding area parts (compression roll housing wear plates, anvil housing wear plate, rotor wear plates, rotor, grates, grate supports, grate support shear bolts, bit-to-anvil gap, rotor gauging bars, bits).
  • Maintenance Schedule: Display screens provide daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance schedules, with timers for engine and hydraulic oil changes.
  • Lockout/Tagout: Battery Disconnect Switch lockout device prevents electrical control system activation during service or when unattended.
  • Fire Prevention Equipment: Includes a hand-held ABC-type fire extinguisher and a hand-operated water pump can for soaking dry combustible material.
  • Fluid Recommendations: Guidelines for diesel engine fuel and oil, main hydraulic system oil, and clutch hydraulic system fluid, with viscosity recommendations based on ambient temperature.
  • Air Compressor Maintenance: Checks for outlet valve, tank water, compressor crankcase oil level, and engine crankcase oil level.
