Overview

This document describes the Audemars Piguet Perpetual Calendar watch, an exceptional timekeeper with a sophisticated mechanism.

Function Description

The Audemars Piguet Perpetual Calendar watch is an automatic timepiece that displays hours, minutes, date, day, month, and phases of the moon. Its Perpetual Calendar mechanism is mechanically programmed to automatically account for leap years, ensuring accurate date display without manual adjustment for these occurrences. The watch is designed to rewind automatically through the normal movement of the watch on the wrist.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Basic Movement: Calibre 2120
  • Thickness of Basic Movement (including rotor): 2.45 mm
  • Thickness of Movement and Assembled Perpetual Calendar Mechanism: 4.00 mm
  • Casing-Diameter: 28.00 mm (12¹/2 ligne)
  • Vibrations/Hour: 19,800 (2.75 Hz)
  • Jewelling: 38 rubies
  • Power Reserve: In excess of 40 hours when fully wound
  • Winding: Automatic winding in both directions
  • Rotor: Made of 21 carat gold, turns on four ruby runners
  • Anti-shock System: "KIF Elastor" on balance
  • Balance: Mobile stud, variable inertia balance (Free sprung)
  • Lunation Duration: A lunation (moon cycle) lasts for 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes, 2.8 seconds.

Usage Features

The watch features a two-position crown for various adjustments:

  • Position A: Winding button for manually winding the movement.
  • Position B: Winding button for hand-setting.

Basic Functions:

  1. Hand-setting: To set the watch hands, pull out the crown to position B. This allows for easy correction of several minutes or hours. It is important to distinguish between 12 o'clock midday and 12 o'clock midnight during this process.
  2. Hour Difference (Time Zone): The hour difference can be corrected between 1 a.m. and 6 p.m. without damaging the mechanism. If hands are turned back beyond midnight, the date and day will appear one day ahead briefly, but this does not require correction.
  3. Winding Up: If the watch stops, a few turns of the crown in position A will restart it. Subsequent movement of the watch on the wrist will ensure it rewinds automatically.

Correcting the Indications (Date, Day, Month, Moon Phases):

  • Corrections for a Stop of 3 Days Maximum: Use the winding button (position B) to turn the hands clockwise until the correct indication is reached.
  • Corrections for a Prolonged Stop (in excess of 3 days), using Correctors:
    • Preliminary Precautions: Before using the correctors, turn the hands (crown in position B) clockwise until the date indicator jumps 1 day. Continue turning clockwise to move both hands to 12 o'clock (midday). In this position, no part of the mechanism is working, allowing correctors to be activated without damaging the calendar.
    • Correction Procedure (using a correction tool):
      1. Date (and Month): Correct the date (simultaneously with the day) and, at the end of the month, the month, using the corrector located at the 10 o'clock position (1).
      2. Day: Correct the day using the corrector located at the 8 o'clock position (2).
      3. Phases of the Moon: Correct the moon phases using the corrector located at the 4 o'clock position (3).
  • Adjusting Moon Phases: Position the moon indicator to the 15th day as shown in the indication diagram (9). To establish the date of the last full moon, press the corrector once for each day between the date of the last full moon and the current date. 4. Resetting the Time: For the first half of the day (before midday), turn the hands anti-clockwise. For the second half of the day (after midday), turn the hands clockwise.

Leap Year: The watch automatically accounts for leap years, which occur every year divisible by 4 (e.g., 1916, 1920, 2000, 2004, 2008).

Maintenance Features

  • Correction Tool: A specific correction tool is provided and recommended for use when working on the correctors to prevent damage.
  • Rotating Presentation Case: To ensure the Perpetual Calendar rewinds constantly, the watch is supplied with an automatic winding box. This box is powered by two lithium batteries and keeps the watch in constant motion, maintaining its accuracy and power reserve.

The watch's indications will remain precise from the start of the following day unless another reset is performed.
