Imprope r installation of child restraints can reduce their effec-
tivene ss or even prevent them from providing any protection.
An improperl y installed child restraint can interfere with the
airbag as it deploy s and seriously injure or even kill the child - even
with an Advanced Airbag System.
Always follow the manufacturer's instructions provided with
the child safety seat or carrier carefully.
Never place additional items on the seat that can increase the
total weight regi stered by the weight-sen sing mat and can cause
injury in a crash.

The airbag system can provide supplemental protection
to properly restrained front seat occupants .

Your vehicle is equi pped with an "Advanced Airbag Syst e m" in compli -
ance with Unite d States Federa l Moto r Vehicle Safety Sta ndard
(FMVSS) 2 0 8 as applicable at t he time your vehicle was manufac-
t ured . The safety belts for t he front seats have "pretensioners" t hat
help to t ake slack out of the belt syst em. The pretension ers are also
act ivated by the electronic control unit for the airbag system.
The fr ont safety bel ts al so have load limit ers to help red uce t he fo rces
applied to the body in a crash.
The air bag for the driver is in the steering whee l hub ~ fig . 97 and t he
airbag for the front passenger is in the instrument panel~ fig . 98 .
The general location of the airbags is ma rked "AIRBAG".
The re is a lot you nee d t o know abo ut t he air bags in your vehicle . We
urge you to read the detai led information about airbags, safety be lts
and child safety in t his and the other chap t ers t hat make up t he
owne r's literature. Please be sure to heed the WARNINGS - they are
extremely important for your safety an d t he sa fety of your passen -
gers, especially infants a nd sma ll childre n.

Even when they deploy, airbags provide only supplemental
protection.
