Do you have a question about the Aviator AVW8974G76 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The device described in this manual is an AVIATOR F-SERIES watch, model AVW8974G76. It is a sophisticated timepiece designed with a focus on both style and functionality, featuring a black leather strap and a chronograph movement.

Function Description

The watch offers a range of functions, making it suitable for various activities and daily wear. Its primary functions include:

  • Timekeeping: Displays the current time with hour, minute, and second hands.
  • Date Display: Shows the current date.
  • World Time Bezel: Allows the user to calculate approximate time in different cities around the world. This function uses a 24-hour marker system in conjunction with city names on the bezel. For example, if the local time in Dubai is 4 AM (04:00), the user can align "Dubai" with "0400" on the outer bezel to then read the time in other cities, such as Rio (which would show 2100, indicating 9 PM the previous day). It's important to note that this function does not account for local activities like British Summer Time.
  • Stopwatch Function: A chronograph feature that allows for precise timing.
    • Start/Stop: Pressing button A starts or stops the stopwatch. Pressing it a second time restarts the function from where it left off.
    • Pause/Split Time: Pressing button B once pauses the stopwatch, allowing the user to read a split time. Pressing it again restarts the split time, and the hands will jump forward to show the combined running time.
    • Reset: Pressing button B after pressing button A will reset all stopwatch hands to zero. The hands will quickly wind forwards or backwards until they return to zero.
    • 1/10th Second Hand Dial: This sub-dial functions for one minute and then stops at zero.
  • Tachymetre: A scale on the watch bezel used to measure speed or production rates. It converts elapsed time (in seconds) over a fixed distance into a rate per hour (e.g., miles per hour, kilometers per hour).
    • Usage for Speed: To measure speed, the user needs a known fixed distance (e.g., one mile). Start the stopwatch when crossing the start line and stop it when crossing the one-mile mark. The number on the tachymetre dial opposite where the second hand is pointing indicates the speed. For instance, if the timer runs for 45 seconds, the second hand points to "9" on the bezel, and the tachymetre dial shows "80," indicating 80 mph.
    • Usage for Production Rate: It can also measure the number of units manufactured per hour.
    • Limitation: Tachymetres are designed to measure for a maximum of 60 seconds (one circuit of the dial).
    • Calculation for Shorter Distances: For distances shorter than the fixed unit (e.g., 200m race), the user can time the event, read the tachymetre value, and then divide it by the fraction of the unit distance. For example, if a runner completes 200m in 25 seconds, the tachymetre might show "135." Since 200m is 1/5 of a kilometer, dividing 135 by 5 gives 27 km/h.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Water Resistance: 10 ATM (Atmospheres). This means the watch is suitable for normal swimming but not for diving of any kind.
    • ATM Explanation: 1 ATM equals 10 meters of water resistance.
    • General Water Resistance Guidelines:
      • 3 ATM: Suitable for everyday use, occasional splashing, and rain, but should not be immersed. Not suitable for swimming.
      • 5 ATM: Suitable for relatively short periods in water, including gentle swimming.
      • 10 ATM: Suitable for normal swimming.
    • Factors Affecting Water Resistance: Seals can deteriorate over time due to exposure to chlorine, salt, strong soaps, or extreme temperatures (hot tubs, saunas, baths, showers). Sudden temperature variations can cause materials to contract, leading to condensation inside the watch.
    • Caution: Never use the crown, chronograph pushers, or rotating dial when the watch is under water. Constant contact with perspiration or cosmetics, as well as sharp knocks, can also affect the seals.
  • Warranty: 2-year International Warranty against material and manufacturing defects from the date of purchase. Repairs or replacements are free of charge during this period, excluding failures due to accidents or careless use.
  • Strap: Integrated black leather 8974G strap.

Usage Features

  • Initial Setup:
    • Plastic Tag Removal: New watches may have a small white plastic tag between the crown and the case side to prevent the mechanism from running during storage. This tag must be removed before use.
    • Crown Positions: The main crown has three positions:
      • Fully Depressed (Default Position): Engages the watch movement for normal timekeeping.
      • Pulled Out Slightly (First Click): Turn clockwise to set the date.
      • Pulled Out Further (Second Click): Turn clockwise to set the time.
    • After setting, push the crown fully in to return to the default position.
  • World Time Crown: Used to adjust the World Time Bezel.
  • Buttons (Pushers): Button A and Button B are used to operate the stopwatch function.

Maintenance Features

  • Warranty Coverage: The 2-year international warranty covers material and manufacturing defects.
  • Exclusions from Warranty:
    • Batteries, straps, and bracelets.
    • Damage caused by accident, misuse, or lack of care.
  • Warranty Claim Requirements: To fulfill the warranty, evidence of purchase (when/where) is required. This can be the original receipt, a bank/card statement, or, for in-flight purchases, flight details (airline name and evidence of travel).
  • Return Shipping: The customer is responsible for costs associated with returning the watch to the International Service Centre, but return shipment will be free of charge.
