Stepper motor driver
If you want to design a device where you need to precisely control the
rotation of the motor shaft, such as in 3D printers or other CNC machines, or
robotic arms, etc., you will need several stepper motors and, above all,
stepper motor drivers.
It is impractical and in most cases impossible to control stepper motors with
the microcontroller board. That is why we need an electronic driver circuit for
each stepper motor.
In this eBook we will cover the "A4988" stepper motor driver. This device
can control the speed and direction of rotation of the motor shaft, as well as
operate the stepper motor in multiple excitation modes. We can even use
microstepping excitation modes with this device. However, we can only
control bipolar stepper motors with this stepper motor driver.
The main chip on this device is the "A4988" circuit, manufactured by
"Allegro". The driver has an integrated translator for easy operation. This
reduces the number of control pins to two, one to control the steps and one
to control the direction of rotation. The driver offers five different step
resolutions or excitation modes: full step and four microstep modes: half
step, quarter step, eighth step and sixteenth step.
