Overview

The Slackers Climbing Kit is a home-based climbing wall system designed for children aged 5 and above, with a maximum user weight of 250 lbs (113 kg). The kit, identified by model number SLA.826, provides the essential components for constructing a climbing wall, offering a fun and challenging athletic activity.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Slackers Climbing Kit is to enable the construction of a personal climbing wall, allowing users to practice and improve their climbing skills in a controlled environment. The kit includes various climbing holds, t-nuts, bolts, wood screws, rope holds, eyebolts, and an Allen wrench, which are all necessary for assembling the climbing surface. Users can arrange the holds to create different "routes" of varying difficulty, providing a customizable and progressive climbing experience. The inclusion of different colored holds allows for the creation of color-coordinated routes, and for more advanced users, tape can be used to designate specific routes when mixing hold colors.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Age Range: 5+
  • Weight Limit: 250 lbs (113 kg)
  • Kit Contents:
    • 20 Climbing Holds
    • 23 T-nuts
    • 20 Bolts
    • 20 Wood Screws
    • 3 Rope Holds
    • 3 Eyebolts
    • 1 Allen Wrench
  • Additional Items Needed (Not Included):
    • 1 (4×8 ft) 3/4-in plywood panel (ACX grade recommended)
    • 3 (8 ft long) 2×4 furring strips
    • 1 box (3 in. long) #9 wood screws
    • 1 (7/16 in.) wood spade drill bit
    • Hammer
    • Stud finder
    • 120-grit sandpaper
    • Drill
  • Plywood Recommendation: 3/4" ACX plywood is strongly recommended due to its high-grade exterior quality and fewer voids in inner layers, which prevents wing nuts from ripping through the sheeting. Thinner plywood is not strong enough.
  • Framing Materials: For vertical walls, 2"x 4" studs are sufficient. For overhanging walls, wider and stronger framing materials like 2"x 6" or 2"x 8" studs are required, with the size determined by the span and load.
  • Product Conformance: ASTM F1148 (consumer safety performance specification for Home Playground Equipment) and EN71-8 (European standards for outdoor play equipment).

Usage Features:

  • Adult Supervision: Adult supervision is required at all times during assembly and use.
  • Plywood Preparation: The process begins by drawing 12-inch margins on the top and bottom and 4-inch margins on the left and right sides of the plywood. A grid pattern is then created by dividing the sheet into 6 vertical and 11 horizontal segments. Holes are drilled at every other intersection, starting from the bottom left and working across and up. The front of the panel can optionally be painted with lead-free paint.
  • Hold Installation: T-nuts are inserted from the back of the panel until flush. Climbing holds are mounted to the front by inserting a screw into the hold and screwing it into the T-nut. The T-nut should penetrate the plywood until it is flush with the back. Wood screws are used in smaller holes on the holds to further secure them to the wood.
  • Rope Hold Installation: Eyebolts are screwed into T-nuts, ensuring they are parallel to the top and bottom of the plywood. Ropes are then slid through the eyebolt and secured with a plastic stopper. Eyebolts are not to be used as holds themselves; ropes must be used to prevent finger entrapment.
  • Wall Installation: A stud finder is used to locate and mark three adjacent wall studs. Eight-foot long 2x4s are attached to these studs with 3-inch #9 screws. Framing studs should run vertically every 16 inches behind the wall, as well as at the top and bottom, to form a robust framework. An eight-foot wide wall requires nine studs (seven vertical studs spaced 16 inches apart, plus a top and bottom plate). The panel is then secured to these strips with 3-inch #9 screws. Rough edges and splinters should be smoothed with sandpaper.
  • Route Setting: Different colored holds can be used to create defined routes. Closer holds and larger holds generally make a route easier. For mixed-color routes, easily removable tape can be used to designate specific paths, allowing for a variety of challenges.
  • Safety Precautions:
    • Always ensure correct installation and check for wear before each use.
    • Contact b4Adventure for replacement parts if worn or damaged parts are found; do not substitute with non-b4Adventure parts.
    • Wear close-fitting, athletic clothing; avoid scarves or loose clothing that could become entangled.
    • Never use the Climbing Kit when wet, or during rain or lightning.
    • Consult a physician before engaging in the activity.
    • Adult assembly and supervision are mandatory.
    • Exercise extreme caution to prevent serious injury or death.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Inspection: The most common maintenance involves tightening and inspecting the holds. Holds can loosen quickly, especially when new, after temperature changes, or in humid environments.
  • Hold Replacement: Immediately remove any damaged or cracked holds, even if the crack is small, as spinning or broken holds can lead to dangerous falls.
  • Hardware Check: Periodically check bolts, screws, joints, and all other hardware for looseness, wear, or damage. Look for signs of stress, such as expanding joints or seams, which may indicate a need for reinforcement or repair.
  • Warranty: The product comes with a one-year warranty on all parts and workmanship, excluding normal wear from use.
