Overview

The BAKFlip is a best-selling hard folding cover designed for truck beds, offering a blend of functionality, security, and ease of maintenance. It is available in several models, including G2, VP, HD, F1, FiberMax, and MX4, each with varying warranty periods.

Function Description

The primary function of the BAKFlip cover is to secure and protect the contents of a truck bed from weather elements and theft. Its hard folding design allows for multiple configurations, from fully closed to fully open, providing versatile access to the truck bed. When closed, the cover lies flat, creating a sleek, low-profile appearance. The folding mechanism enables users to partially or fully open the cover, accommodating different cargo sizes and access needs.

The cover features a robust latching system that secures it to the truck bed rails, ensuring that cargo remains protected. Drain tubes are integrated into the design to channel water away from the truck bed, keeping the contents dry. For Ram Box models, specific hardware is included to ensure compatibility and proper installation, such as front cover mounting plates, prop rod swivel mounting brackets, prop rods to lock the cover open, and various drain caps.

Usage Features

Installation: The installation process begins with preparing the truck bed. This involves installing a cab/bulkhead seal (weather strip) by cleaning the surface with isopropyl alcohol and allowing it to dry before applying the tape. For Ram Box models, an adhesive promoter is applied to the top edge of the aluminum rail, and a seal is taped to the top inner edge, with the rubber bump facing inward. Tie-downs are removed from the rail and reinstalled later. Plugs are unclipped and removed from the rail.

Mounting plates are slid into the rail from the end. The slotted cover mounting plate is positioned as far forward as possible, with its top edge aligning with the rubber seal. Before mounting the cover on the truck, two buckle ends are installed into pre-drilled holes on the front header using machine screws and threaded posts, tightened by hand.

The cover is then set in the folded position on the BakFlip rails towards the front of the cab. The small panel faces forward, towards the cab, and folds down over the silver brackets. The front panel must sit just inside the bulkhead rail, with the seal resting on top. The panel is folded down and aligned squarely on the rails, matching the mounting holes with the silver slotted brackets. A large flat bolt with a rubber washer is inserted through the front panel and silver slotted bracket underneath.

The cover is mounted using an elevator bolt, rubber washer, flat washer, lock washer, and star knob, in that order, centered in the bed opening, and tightened. Prop rod swivel mounts are installed approximately 17 inches from the bulkhead, ensuring the rod swivels into the slide lock with clearance, with the U-shape facing up. Remaining brackets are installed where each latch meets the rail, ensuring the latch plate does not touch the bottom of the cover and latches when closed. The latch brackets are positioned to clear other hardware like the slide lock. Prop rod retaining clips are attached to the Ram Box rail where they will meet the prop rod when rotated down.

Drain caps and hoses are attached at each end, with the larger cap towards the cab and the smaller caps towards the tailgate. Cab bumpers are attached to the very top edge of the panel facing the cab. The two outer cab bumpers should be 3 inches from the panel edge to prevent rail interference when closed. If the truck has a slider window, the center bumper should be cut in two pieces and placed on either side of the slider to prevent direct contact.

Operational Positions: The BAKFlip offers three main operational positions:

  • Closed Position: All panels are fully closed and latched to the tonneau side rail, with latches engaged. This position provides maximum security and weather protection.
  • Folded Up Position: To drive with the cover folded up, tie-down straps and buckles are used. Both buckle clips are fully inserted into the buckle ends on the front header panel, and straps are adjusted to ensure the cover is secure. Clips should be secured in the storage position when not in use.
  • Flipped Up Position: The cover can be folded open and lifted vertically or past 90 degrees towards the truck cab. The prop rod, attached to the rail, is released, folded over, and positioned firmly against the vertical plate on the underside of the cover. The prop rod locks are then slid downwards, and the knobs are tightened to lock into position on both sides of the cover. This ensures the cover is firmly in position with minimal movement.

Tail Panel Operation: To close the tailgate panel, it is crucial to shut the tailgate before closing the cover to prevent damage. The BAKFlip MX4 model features a universal tailgate seal, allowing the tailgate to close whether the cover is up or down. To raise the tailgate panel, open the tailgate and reach under the panel for the cable at the ends of the panel housing. Pull down on either cable to release both rear latches while lifting the panel with the other hand.

Safety Guidelines: It is important to adhere to safety guidelines for proper operation. While driving, the cover must be completely flat and secure with all latches in the closed position, or completely folded up (all panels) and secured at the cab. Driving with the cover partially opened is not recommended. Before folding the cover, any snow or foreign material must be removed. The vehicle should not be towed from the rear with the tonneau on the truck, and the vehicle should not be operated with objects on top of the cover. Failure to follow these cautions may result in severe damage and void the warranty.

Maintenance Features

General Care: BAKFlip tonneau covers are made from durable materials and require simple care to ensure a long life and optimal performance. Regular cleaning and inspection are recommended.

Cleaning the Top (G2, HD, MX4, Fibermax & F1): Standard automotive soap and water with a soft sponge or cloth are recommended for cleaning. Shammy drying helps keep the finish polished and brilliant. Wax is not recommended as it can fill in cracks and crevices, potentially affecting the textured panel finish. Harsh cleaners or abrasives should not be used.

Cleaning the Top (VP): For VP models, which incorporate OE marine-grade vinyl laminated on the top surfaces, standard automotive soap and water with a soft sponge or cloth are recommended. Shammy drying prevents water spots and ensures a rich, dark finish.

Treating the Vinyl Top (VP): 3M 303 Aerospace Protectant can be used to keep the vinyl surface clean and protected from the elements. It also helps remove water spots and protects against fading, discoloration, and cracking from harmful UV rays. Additionally, it repels dust and stains. Simply spray on and wipe dry for a beautiful, matte finish that protects the cover from road grime and dust.

All BAKFlip Maintenance: It is recommended to periodically check that the cover is securely attached to the truck bed. Inspect the clamps and front mounting bolts to ensure they are properly installed and have not come loose or become misaligned during operation. Covers that are used frequently or are subjected to vibrations and impacts from rough roadways may require adjustment.

Lubricating the Latches: Periodically inspect and service the latches on each panel. Clean away any excess dirt or grime and lubricate with silicone spray. This ensures the latches move freely in and out, properly engage the side rail, and provide optimum security. Care should be taken not to overspray the cover, and any excess around the latch location should be wiped away.
