CARATTERISTICHE TECNICHE
Gli addolcitori BAV devono essere impiegati per il trattamento di acqua destinata al consumo uma-
no ed avente caratteristiche chimico-fisiche previste dalle normative vigenti in materia di trattamento
dell’acqua.

Question and Answer IconNeed help?

Do you have a question about the Balugani BAV5 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The BAV water softener is designed for treating potable water, ensuring it meets the chemical-physical characteristics required by current water treatment regulations. It reduces the salts responsible for water hardness, proportionally to the adjustment of the hardness-mixer screw, and causes a slight increase in sodium ions due to the action of the cationic ion exchange resins used in the treatment process.

Usage Features:

The BAV automatic water softeners are equipped with an electronic head featuring a volumetric regeneration system for the resins. The microprocessor software initiates regeneration only when a specific volume of water has passed through the resins, unlike chronometric control valves that regenerate at fixed intervals regardless of actual daily water consumption. In cases of low water consumption, the control valve operates in a combined volumetric/chronometric mode, activating a forced regeneration based on user or manufacturer settings, which can be reprogrammed.

Control Valve Components:

  • Protective Cover: Shields internal components.
  • Display and Programming Keyboard: Allows users to monitor status and adjust settings.
  • Hardness Regulating Screw: Adjusts the blend of softened water (0°F) with tap water to achieve desired hardness. The softener is delivered with a 0°F setting. Do not overtighten this screw.
  • Volumetric Counter: Measures the volume of water processed.
  • Water Inlet/Outlet: Connections for water flow.
  • Pipe for Brine Aspiration and Filling: Manages the brine solution for regeneration.
  • Supply Connector: For electrical connection.
  • Drain: For wastewater discharge.

Installation Guidelines:

Installation must be performed by qualified personnel in compliance with local regulations. Incorrect installation can lead to environmental damage, harm to people, animals, and property, for which the manufacturer disclaims responsibility.

  • Drain Hose: The provided drain hose must be securely connected to the appropriate hose clip, ensuring it is flexible, of adequate section, and free of kinks. It must be firmly fixed to the drain pipelines to prevent spills. The drain hose must NOT be immersed in stagnant water to avoid backflow.
  • Distance to Drain: The device should not be more than 4 meters from the drain.
  • Temperature: The softener should be placed in environments with temperatures between 5°C and 35°C to prevent damage from excessive heat or cold.
  • Inactivity: After long periods of inactivity, a manual regeneration is required to rinse the resins.

First Start Procedure:

  1. Pour Water into Brine Tank:
    • BAV5: 2.5 L
    • BAV8: 4 L
    • BAV10: 5 L
    • BAV12: 6 L
    • BAV18: 10 L This step will be automated after each regeneration.
  2. Add Salt: Fill the brine tank with salt tabs (EN973 Type “A”) up to ¾ of its capacity (refer to MIN/MAX labels). Using dirty or unsuitable salt can damage the softener and void the warranty.
  3. Open Water Supply: Slowly open the tap feeding the softener, then open a downstream tap to purge air from the pipes and rinse the resins for 3-5 minutes.
  4. Check for Leaks: Visually inspect all parts for water leaks.

Display Language Selection:

The BAV control valve has a multilingual display.

  1. Ensure the valve is powered off.
  2. Connect the power supply.
  3. Immediately press the "Menu/Confirm" and "Back" buttons simultaneously.
  4. After about 5 seconds, the list of available languages will appear.
  5. Release the buttons.
  6. Use the up/down arrow buttons to select the desired language and press "Menu/Confirm" to confirm.

Time Setting:

If the display time is incorrect:

  1. If a padlock symbol appears (keyboard locked), press the up/down arrow buttons simultaneously for about 5 seconds to unlock.
  2. Once unlocked, press "Menu/Confirm" (the display will show "choose 12/24 h").
  3. Use the down arrow button to select "time setting" and confirm with "Menu/Confirm".
  4. Adjust hours and minutes using the up/down arrow buttons and confirm with "Menu/Confirm".
  5. Press "Back" to return to the service screen. The keyboard will relock after 60 seconds. All other electronic parameters are pre-set and optimized for most users, requiring no further adjustments.

Water Hardness Regulation:

The control valve allows adjustment of water hardness. Use a screwdriver on the regulating screw to blend softened water (0°F) with tap water. Tightening the screw reduces hardness to 0°F, while loosening it increases hardness. This adjustment should be assisted by a water hardness measurement kit. The softener is delivered with a 0°F setting. Do not overtighten the regulating screw.

Forced Regeneration:

To activate a forced regeneration:

  1. In service mode, press the "Manual Regeneration" button. This will activate the valve's motor.
  2. The display will show regeneration phases and their timing.
  3. To skip a phase, press the "Manual Regeneration" button until you reach the desired phase. The service condition will be restored after regeneration.

Modifying Cyclic Capacity (for low water hardness):

BAV softeners are programmed with a cyclic capacity based on a hypothetical incoming water hardness of 40°F. If the actual incoming water hardness is lower, the softener's capacity can be increased to achieve higher treated water volume. From service position:

  1. Press "Menu/Confirm".
  2. Press "Down" 5 times to reach "advanced settings".
  3. Press "Menu/Confirm".
  4. Press "Down" 2 times to reach "production water in cycle".
  5. Press "Menu/Confirm".
  6. Use the following formula to calculate the new capacity: (X * 5000) / actual hardness to treat.
    • BAV5: (3.5 * 5000) / hardness
    • BAV8: (5 * 5000) / hardness
    • BAV12: (9 * 5000) / hardness
    • BAV18: (18 * 5000) / hardness Modify the displayed value using the up/down arrow buttons.
  7. Press "Menu/Confirm".
  8. Press "Back" to return to the main service screen.

Modifying Regeneration Interval:

If low water consumption prevents volumetric regeneration for more than a week, the softener will automatically regenerate and rinse resins based on a programmed time interval (in days) in the "advanced settings" menu. From service position:

  1. Press "Menu/Confirm".
  2. Press "Down" 5 times to reach "advanced settings".
  3. Press "Menu/Confirm".
  4. Press "Down" 7 times to reach "max days between regenerations".
  5. Press "Menu/Confirm".
  6. Use the up/down arrow buttons to set the parameter to 7 days and press "Menu/Confirm".
  7. Press "Back" to return to the service screen.

Maintenance Features:

  • Brine Tank Cleaning: The brine tank should be cleaned at least twice a year to remove sediments and foam caused by salt deposits.
  • Resin Replacement: The resins have an average lifespan of 5 years and must be replaced by qualified personnel thereafter.
  • Resin Condition Check: Test water hardness immediately after regeneration. If the water is still hard, the resins may be exhausted and need replacement.
  • Salt Level Check: Regularly check the salt level in the brine tank and refill as needed, as regeneration relies on a hydro-saline solution formed by dissolving salt in water.
  • Recommended Salt: Use salt tabs specifically for water softening. Other salt products can damage the softener and void the warranty.
  • Filter Maintenance: If an upstream filter is installed, it should be cleaned 3-4 times a year and the cartridge replaced with a similar one if necessary.

Troubleshooting:

Before consulting the table, ensure salt is present for regeneration and the system is electrically connected. If issues persist, contact BALUGANI Water Treatment.
