Overview

The NMEA 2000® Remote Button is an external push-button device designed to be connected to an NMEA® backbone, primarily used to mark a Crew Overboard (MOB) waypoint at the vessel's current location. This device serves as a critical safety tool, allowing users to quickly create a waypoint in emergency situations by simply pressing the button. Repeated presses will generate multiple waypoints, providing flexibility in marking an incident.

Function Description:

The primary function of the NMEA 2000® Remote Button is to provide a rapid and accessible means of marking a Crew Overboard event. When activated, the button transmits a Crew Overboard Notification (PGN 127233) over the NMEA 2000® network. This notification is then received by compatible Multi-Function Displays (MFDs) or instrument displays, which will record the vessel's position as an MOB waypoint. The button features an LED light that illuminates at maximum level when pressed, providing visual confirmation of activation. While the button can create waypoints, the deletion of these waypoints must be performed through the MFD or a compatible instrument display, such as a Triton². The device is designed to integrate seamlessly into an existing NMEA 2000® network, drawing its power from the network itself.

Important Technical Specifications:

Environmental:

  • Operating temperature: -15°C to 55°C (5°F to 131°F), ensuring reliable operation across a wide range of marine conditions.
  • Waterproof rating: IP67, indicating that the device is protected against dust ingress and can withstand temporary immersion in water up to 1 meter for 30 minutes, making it suitable for harsh marine environments.

Electrical:

  • Power supply voltage: 12 V DC, standard for NMEA 2000® networks.
  • Operating voltage: 9 V DC – 18 V DC, providing a flexible operating range.
  • Power consumption: 1 LEN (Load Equivalency Number), which translates to 0.39 W (28 mA at 13.8 V). This low power consumption ensures minimal impact on the vessel's electrical system.
  • Reverse polarity protection: Yes, safeguarding the device from damage due to incorrect wiring.

Physical:

  • Weight: 0.13 kg (0.3 lbs), making it lightweight and easy to install.
  • Dimensions: The remote button itself has a diameter of 22.5 mm (0.88") for the button face and an overall diameter of 25 mm (0.98") for the mounting flange. The label for the button has a diameter of 52.0 mm (2.04"). The cable length from the button to the Micro-C connector is approximately 1.73 m (5.67 ft), with various segments for flexibility in installation. The cable includes a 0.6 m (1.97 ft) segment, an 88 mm (3.5") segment, a 1.0 m (3.3 ft) segment, and a 41 mm (1.62") segment leading to the connector. The connector itself is compact, with a length of 20 mm (0.79") and a width of 12 mm (0.47").

Usage Features:

  • Ease of Use: The single-button operation simplifies the process of marking an MOB waypoint, crucial in emergency situations where quick action is required.
  • Visual Confirmation: The LED light on the button provides immediate feedback that the button press has been registered and the waypoint is being created.
  • Network Integration: Designed to be part of an NMEA 2000® network, it seamlessly communicates with other compatible devices such as GPS sensors and MFDs.
  • Mounting Flexibility: The compact design and included Micro-C T-connector allow for straightforward installation in various locations on a vessel. The button requires a mounting hole of 22 mm (0.87") in diameter.
  • Multi-Waypoint Creation: Repeated presses allow for the creation of multiple waypoints, which can be useful in tracking a drifting object or person.

Maintenance Features:

  • Robust Construction: The IP67 waterproof rating ensures durability and protection against marine elements, reducing the need for frequent maintenance.
  • Self-Powered: Drawing power directly from the NMEA 2000® network eliminates the need for separate power sources or battery replacements for the button itself.
  • Compliance: The device complies with various international standards, including CE under EMC Directive 2014/30/EU, UKCA under The Electromagnetic Compatibility Regulations 2016, and Australian/New Zealand Radiocommunications (Electromagnetic Compatibility) standard 2017, ensuring its reliability and safety.
  • Warranty: A warranty card is supplied, and further support can be found on the brand's websites (lowrance.com, simrad-yachting.com, bandg.com).

Important Considerations:

The manufacturer emphasizes that this product is not a substitute for proper training and prudent seamanship. Users are solely responsible for observing maritime safety practices and should not rely on this device as the sole or primary source of navigation. It is recommended to use multiple navigational methods to ensure safety. Navico Holding AS and its affiliates disclaim liability for any misuse of the product. The manual also serves as a guide for the product at the time of printing, and specifications may change without notice.
