Overview

This document serves as the operating manual for the BAOFENG UV-5RA Dual Band/Dual Display Radio, a portable transceiver designed for secure, instant, and reliable communications. It provides comprehensive instructions for installation, operation, and maintenance, ensuring users can maximize the radio's performance.

Function Description:

The UV-5RA is a dual-band handheld transceiver featuring a display function menu on its LCD screen. It incorporates DTMF encoding and functions as a commercial FM radio receiver (65 MHz ~ 108 MHz). The radio supports 105 "DCS" codes and 50 programmable "CTCSS" privacy codes, allowing for closed user group communications. A "VOX" (voice-operated transmission) function enables hands-free operation, automatically activating transmission upon detecting the user's voice and terminating it when speaking stops. The device includes an alarm function for emergencies and offers up to 128 memory channels for storing frequently used frequencies. Users can select between broadband (Wide) and narrowband (Narrow) operation, as well as high (5W) and low (1W) power output. The radio also features a dual watch/dual reception (TDR) capability, allowing it to monitor two frequencies simultaneously.

Usage Features:

The UV-5RA is designed for ease of use with a programmable keyboard and display illumination. A "beep" function provides auditory feedback for key presses. The selectable frequency step can be set to 6.25/12.5 kHz. The "OFFSET" function allows for frequency offset for repeater access, crucial for extending communication range. A battery-saving function ("SAVE") helps prolong battery life, while a transmission timer ("TOT") prevents excessive power transistor overheating by automatically cutting off transmission after a set time. The radio supports various scan modes, including memory channel scanning and full-band scanning. The "BCLO" (Busy Channel Lockout) function prevents accidental disruption of ongoing communications by inhibiting transmission when a strong signal is present on the channel. Built-in RX CTCSS/DCS scan and an LED flashlight enhance its utility. The squelch threshold is adjustable from 0 to 9, allowing users to control the sensitivity of signal reception. Crossband reception/transmission and a tone end of transmission feature are also included. The radio can be programmed via PC, offering advanced customization options. A built-in key lock prevents accidental changes to settings.

The radio's controls include a PTT (Push-To-Talk) key for transmitting, and two side keys: SK-SIDE KEY1/CALL for activating/deactivating the FM radio and alarm function, and SK-SIDE KEY2/MONI for turning on/off the flashlight and monitoring signals. The VFO/MR button switches between frequency and channel modes, while the A/B button switches frequency display. The BAND button allows users to switch between different frequency bands, including FM radio bands (65-75MHz/76-108MHz). The *SCAN key activates the Reverse function, exchanging reception and transmission frequencies, and initiates frequency/channel scanning or FM radio station search. The # key switches between high/low transmit power in channel mode and locks/unlocks the keypad. The MENU key accesses the radio's settings, and the ▲/▼ keys navigate menus and adjust frequencies/channels. A numeric keypad is used for entering programming information and sending signal codes. An accessory jack allows connection of audio accessories or a programming cable.

Maintenance Features:

The manual emphasizes several maintenance aspects to ensure optimal performance and longevity of the UV-5RA. For battery charging, only the manufacturer-specified charger should be used. The charging status is indicated by an LED: red flashing for standby, solid red for charging, solid green for fully charged, and red flashing with green glow for error. New batteries should be charged for 5 hours before initial use, and maximum capacity is achieved after three full charge/discharge cycles. Users are advised to recharge the battery when power runs low.

Battery tips include charging within a temperature range of 5℃ - 40°C to prevent leakage or damage. When charging a battery attached to the radio, the radio should be turned off for a full charge. It's crucial not to interrupt the power supply or remove the battery during charging. Wet batteries should be dried with a soft cloth before charging. Batteries have a finite lifespan, and replacement is recommended when operating time significantly shortens. To prolong battery life, performance in cold weather is addressed, suggesting a spare battery for such conditions. Dust on battery contacts can impair function, so regular cleaning with a dry cloth is advised. For long-term storage, batteries should be fully charged to prevent over-discharge and recharged every six months for Li-Ion batteries. Storage in a cool, dry place at room temperature helps reduce self-discharge.

Safety information highlights the importance of qualified technicians for servicing, avoiding radio modification, and using only BAOFENG-approved batteries and chargers. Users are warned against using damaged antennas and operating the radio in explosive or flammable environments. To prevent electromagnetic interference, the radio should be turned off in restricted areas, including aircraft and blasting sites. Proper handling during transmission, holding the microphone 3-4 cm from lips and keeping the antenna at least 2.5 cm from the body, is crucial for safety and optimal signal. The manual also includes a troubleshooting section to address common issues like the radio not starting, quick battery drain, no sound from the speaker, and communication problems, guiding users to check settings or contact their dealer for support.
