Overview

This document is the User's Information Manual for the WAG-Series Combination Gas/Electric Wall-Mount unit, manufactured by Bard Manufacturing Company. It provides essential information for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the gas furnace.

Function Description:

The WAG-Series Combination Gas/Electric Wall-Mount unit is designed to provide heating and cooling for a building. It operates using an Electronic Blower Control (EBC) and a gas control system for heating functions. For cooling, it utilizes a compressor and condenser fan. The unit is equipped with a vent shut-off system that monitors combustion air and prevents flue products from entering the structure if the vent becomes blocked. A fresh air damper assembly allows outside fresh air to be introduced into the building when the main unit comfort air blower is operating.

Important Technical Specifications:

The manual specifies filter sizes:

  • Main System Filter: 20 X 30 X 1 Fiberglass disposable
  • Fresh Air Filter: 4 x 26 x 1/2 Washable

The heating cycle involves the EBC turning on the inducer motor, followed by the pressure switch closing to signal the ignition control. An intermittent pilot with a hot surface igniter lights the pilot burner, senses the flame, and then the main gas valve opens, allowing the pilot flame to light the main burners. There is a 60-second delay before the comfort air blower starts on low speed for heating. After the thermostat is satisfied, burners turn off, the inducer runs for 5 seconds, and the comfort air blower runs for two minutes.

For the cooling cycle, the compressor and condenser fan start immediately, and the comfort air blower starts 6 seconds later on high speed. When the thermostat is satisfied, the compressor and condenser fan stop, and the comfort air blower continues to operate for 60 seconds.

Canadian units are equipped with high and low pressure controls for compressor lockout protection. To reset the lockout relay, the thermostat must be set to "OFF" and then returned to the normal operating position.

The manual fan (continuous airflow) operation allows the comfort air blower to operate continuously on heating speed for air circulation, helping to keep operating noise down and conserve energy. During a call for cooling, the blower automatically shifts to cooling speed and returns to heating speed 60 seconds after the thermostat is satisfied.

Usage Features:

The manual emphasizes safety and proper operation. Users are instructed to keep the manual in a safe, readily available place and to pass it on to future purchasers. In case of missing or damaged documents, users should contact their installer or the manufacturer. For efficient service, the furnace model and serial number are required.

Critical safety warnings are provided regarding:

  • Gas and Combustion Products: Users are warned about the dangers of fire, explosion, nausea, asphyxiation, or death if gas or combustion products enter the furnace area. Instructions for what to do if gas is smelled are detailed, including not trying to light appliances, not touching electrical switches, not using the phone in the building, and immediately calling the gas supplier or fire department from a neighbor's phone.
  • Flammable/Corrosive Products: Users are strictly warned against storing or using flammable liquids/vapors (e.g., gasoline, paint thinners) or corrosive products (e.g., cleaners containing chlorines, fluorines) near the furnace, as these can cause fire, explosion, or vent system/heat exchanger failure.
  • Furnace Operation: Do not operate the furnace with the blower door open or removed, as this can allow combustion products to circulate. The front door must be in place during operation due to hot surfaces. Combustion and ventilation air openings must not be blocked or covered, including keeping insulation at least 12 inches away from burner combustion air openings in attics or insulated spaces.
  • Emergency Shutoff: Users MUST know how to turn off gas and electricity to the furnace before an emergency. Instructions are provided for manual shutoff valves on the gas control, in the gas supply line, and at the gas meter/propane tank, as well as electrical shutoff devices near the furnace or at the main circuit panel.
  • Troubleshooting: Actions are outlined for various emergencies, such as smelling gas, continuous hot air with the blower on, cycling hot/cold air, unfamiliar odors during operation, or tripped circuit breakers/blown fuses.

Maintenance Features:

The manual outlines several maintenance requirements:

  • Air Filter Cleaning: Users are responsible for keeping air filters clean. Dirty filters reduce efficiency and can damage the blower motor, heat exchanger, or air conditioning system. Filters should be inspected weekly for the first four weeks after installation, then monthly. Washable filters should be cleaned according to manufacturer specifications. Filter access covers must be replaced after cleaning or changing filters.
  • Duct Work: Registers and return air grilles must be kept open and unobstructed.
  • Annual Inspection: The furnace, vent terminal, and combustion air intake hood should be inspected yearly by a qualified service agency, preferably before the heating season. Owners should also conduct regular general inspections (monthly or every two months during heating season) of the furnace area and vent terminal for physical soundness, blockages, and proper clearances.
  • Owner/Occupant Periodic Inspection: A detailed procedure is provided for owner/occupant inspections, including setting the thermostat to OFF, shutting off electrical power, removing the burner access door, observing the burner compartment for scaling/sooting/corrosion, inspecting the vent terminal for debris, restoring electrical power, observing pilot and main burner flames (looking for mostly "blue" flames with possibly a little orange at the tips, centered in compartments, and no wavering/blowing on blower start-up), and replacing the burner access door. If any issues are observed, a service agency should be contacted.
  • Lubrication: The main blower motor and induced draft blower motor are permanently lubricated and require no maintenance.
  • Crankcase Heater Start-Up: For air conditioning, a crankcase heater prevents liquid refrigerant migration. Specific start-up procedures are detailed, including ensuring the thermostat is off, applying power to energize the heater, allowing 4 hours or 60 minutes per pound of refrigerant (whichever is greater) for the heater to evaporate liquid refrigerant, and then setting the thermostat to operate the compressor.
  • Fresh Air Damper: The fresh air damper blade can be set to full open, 50% open, full closed, or automatic (barometric) operation. The cleanable filter in the fresh air damper requires periodic cleaning, with frequency depending on unit operation and local air conditions.
  • Replacement Parts: Replacement parts are available through local distributors. When ordering, the complete model number and serial number of the unit must be provided to ensure correct parts are issued.
