Question and Answer IconNeed help?

Do you have a question about the base engineering MEC EXCELA-WYND ME9000LH-17 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The ME9000LH-17/25 Excela-Wynd™ Hose Reel, with a patent pending design, is a mechanical device designed for efficient hose management, primarily in applications involving cargo tank motor vehicles. It is powered by a BASE Engineering VSC9000 variable speed controller, ensuring precise control over hose deployment and retrieval.

Function Description

The hose reel's primary function is to store, deploy, and rewind a 1-inch ID hose, typically 150 feet in length, used for fluid transfer. It features an automatic level wind system that ensures even layering of the hose on the reel drum, preventing binding and improving overall performance. The reel is designed for hands-free operation during hose deployment, allowing the operator to walk the filler valve to the tank while the reel automatically releases the hose. For rewinding, the operator presses and holds a "REEL IN" button on a remote control (PC3 or ASKW) while walking the filler valve back to the truck. The system includes safety features such as automatic braking when the reel-out mode is paused or canceled, and over-current protection for the motor.

Usage Features

  • VSC9000 Speed Controller: The reel is exclusively powered by a BASE Engineering VSC9000 variable speed controller. This controller allows for customization of hose length settings (100', 125', 150') and rewind speed (1.5 to 3.5 MPH) via DIP switches and a potentiometer. The factory setting for hose length is 150' and for rewind speed is 2.9 MPH.
  • Hands-Free Reel Out™: This feature allows the operator to pull the filler valve towards the tank, release a latch, and rotate the gimbal until it locks in place. Pressing the "REEL OUT" button on the remote releases the reel brake and briefly turns the motor to signal active Reel Out mode.
  • Hose Rewinding: To rewind, the operator presses and holds the "REEL IN" button on the remote while walking the filler valve back to the truck. Releasing the latch and rotating the gimbal allows for rewinding any remaining hose.
  • Adjustable Carriage: The carriage, which guides the hose, can be adjusted to ensure proper alignment and even layering of the hose on the drum.
  • Flexible Inlet Connection: A flexible connection must always be installed between fixed piping and the reel inlet to prevent damage and reduce injury risk.
  • Safety Warnings: The manual highlights critical safety warnings regarding pinch points (hose guide, inlet flange), rotating shafts, and the necessity of operating the reel with guards in place. It also notes that the product contains chemicals known to cause cancer and birth defects in California.
  • Diagnostic Features: The VSC9000 controller includes diagnostic DIP switches for motor reverse, test mode, and sensor override, aiding in troubleshooting and setup.

Maintenance Features

  • Anti-Seize Compound: MEC recommends applying a Nickel-based (copper-free) anti-seize compound to the external threads of all fasteners during installation or servicing to prevent seizing.
  • Regular Inspection: Marshall Excelsior emphasizes the importance of regular inspection and maintenance of its products due to wear, contaminants, corrosion, and aging.
  • Cover Removal/Replacement: The optional reel cover can be easily removed by pulling detent pins or removing locking screws, pushing the cover to compress spring-loaded plungers, and moving fixed posts. Replacement is the reverse process.
  • Manual Crank: In case of power loss or other issues, a manual crank is provided to assist with hose loading. It engages with the axle by inserting a safety collar and pushing it in.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual includes a troubleshooting section to address common issues such as the reel brake not releasing, the reel not turning, or the reel stopping during rewind, offering possible causes and solutions like checking remote batteries, truck ignition, circuit breaker, and hose obstructions.
  • Product Age Determination: A date code (series of letters and numbers) on the product helps determine its age, which is crucial for assessing its safe service life.
