Overview

The Bauer Variable Speed Compact Router, model 19121E-B, is a corded power tool designed for various routing applications. This manual provides comprehensive instructions for its safe operation, setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Function Description:

The Bauer Compact Router is primarily used for cutting parallel to the edge of a workpiece, following a clamped guide, or cutting circles. It features a variable speed control, allowing users to adjust the router's speed to suit different materials and bit diameters. The router is equipped with a 1/4" collet, accommodating bits with a 1/4" shank. Its compact design makes it suitable for detailed work and applications where maneuverability is crucial. The tool's depth adjustment screw and locking lever enable precise control over cutting depth.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Electrical Rating: 120 VAC, 60 Hz, 6.5 A
  • No Load Speed: 10,000 – 30,000 RPM (revolutions per minute)
  • Collet Size: 1/4"
  • Max. Accessory Diameter: 1-3/8"

Usage Features:

  • Variable Speed Control: The router features a speed control dial with settings from 1 (slowest) to 6 (fastest), allowing users to select the optimal speed for the material being cut and the bit diameter. This helps prevent damage to the workpiece and the tool.
  • Depth Adjustment: The depth adjustment screw and locking lever facilitate precise setting of the cutting depth. Users can retract the router bit within the base, place the base on a flat surface, and slide the router down until the bit tip contacts the work surface to establish a starting position. The desired depth of cut is then added to this starting position, and the housing is moved accordingly. A test cut on scrap material is recommended to verify the adjustment.
  • Fence Installation: The router can be used with a fence for making cuts parallel to the edge of a workpiece or following a guide. The fence bracket can be installed with the fence facing inward (for parallel cuts) or outward (for use with a temporary guide). The fence is secured using an attachment knob and wing nut, allowing for precise distance adjustments from the router bit.
  • Circle Cutting: For cutting circles, the fence can be installed with its center hole aligned with the desired center point of the circle. A nail driven through the center hole secures the fence, allowing the router to pivot and cut a perfect circle. The distance from the center hole to the far edge of the router bit should equal the desired radius of the circle.
  • Router Bit Installation: The tool uses 1/4" shank bits. To install a bit, the spindle lock is pressed to prevent rotation, and the collet nut is loosened with the large wrench. The new bit is then inserted fully into the collet nut, pulled out slightly to create a 1/16" gap at the bottom, and the collet nut is tightened while holding the spindle lock.
  • Workpiece and Work Area Setup: Before operation, it is crucial to designate a clean, well-lit work area free from distractions. Workpieces should be secured with a vise or clamps to prevent movement. The power cord must be routed safely to avoid tripping hazards and ensure sufficient length for free movement.
  • Operating Direction: The router bit rotates clockwise. For most materials, it is best to move the router from left to right when facing the workpiece. When cutting outside edges, the router should be moved counterclockwise, while for inside edges, it should be moved clockwise.
  • Safety Features: The manual emphasizes the importance of wearing ANSI-approved eye protection and NIOSH-approved breathing protection. It also highlights the need for proper grounding for tools marked "Grounding Required" and explains the double insulation system for tools that do not require grounding.

Maintenance Features:

  • Pre-Use Inspection: Before each use, a general inspection of the tool is required. This includes checking for loose hardware, misalignment or binding of moving parts, damaged cord/electrical wiring, cracked or broken parts, and any other condition that might affect safe operation.
  • Post-Use Cleaning: After use, the external surfaces of the tool should be wiped with a clean cloth.
  • Dust Removal: Periodically, users should wear ANSI-approved safety goggles and NIOSH-approved breathing protection and use dry compressed air to blow dust out of the motor vents.
  • Lubrication: The collet, collet nut, and router bits should be periodically wiped with a light oil to prevent rust.
  • Carbon Brush Replacement: If the tool's performance diminishes or it stops working, the carbon brushes may need replacement. This procedure should be performed by a qualified technician.
  • Cord Maintenance: Any damaged supply cord must be replaced by a qualified service technician to prevent serious injury.
  • Storage: After use, the tool should be turned off, unplugged, cleaned, and stored indoors out of reach of children.

Safety Information:

The manual includes extensive safety warnings and instructions, categorized into work area safety, electrical safety, personal safety, power tool use and care, router-specific safety, and vibration safety. It warns against operating power tools in explosive atmospheres, using damaged cords, and emphasizes the importance of proper grounding and personal protective equipment. Vibration safety guidelines are provided to mitigate the risk of physical injury from prolonged exposure to tool vibrations, including recommendations for medical check-ups, avoiding smoking, wearing gloves, and taking vibration-free periods. The manual also advises against depressing the spindle lock during operation and leaving the tool unattended while plugged in. For individuals with pacemakers, specific precautions are listed, such as avoiding operating alone, not using with the trigger locked on, proper maintenance, and grounding the power cord.
