Overview

The Bentwood Vertical 63 is a coffee grinder designed for grinding roasted coffee beans, intended for indoor use. It operates on a 220-230V, 50-60Hz power supply and has a protection type of IPX1 and protection class I. The grinder features a 6.3Amp fuse and an idle speed of 1400 rpm. Its sound emission during grinding is 80 dBA. The grinding capacity ranges from 3-8 g/s, depending on the espresso bean type, selected grinding degree, and mains frequency. The maximum permitted operating cycle is 30 seconds ON / 6 minutes OFF, with a maximum daily output of 20 kg. The grinder's dimensions are 198 × 415 × 550 mm (W x D x H), and it weighs 22.0 kg (net). The bean hopper has a maximum filling quantity of 600g.

Function Description:

The Vertical 63 is specifically designed for grinding roasted coffee beans. It is not intended for grinding other products or objects. The grinder features a bean hopper (2) with a lid (1) for holding coffee beans, a grind adjustment mechanism (4) with a grinding degree scale (5) to select the desired fineness, and an outlet (7) for dispensing ground coffee. A slider (3) on the bean hopper allows for opening and closing the bean container. The grinder is equipped with an On/Off button (9) and a power cable outlet (10). A ventilation grid (11) is present for cooling. The user interface includes a display with a menu button (1), check arrow (2), up arrow (3), down arrow (7), and a manual button (6) for controlling grinding operations. The grinder also includes a thermal overcurrent circuit-breaker to protect against electrical overload.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model: Vertical 63

Usage Features:

The grinder is set up by placing it on a level, stable surface and ensuring it is switched off. The bean hopper is then positioned and secured with a slot screwdriver. The grinder is connected to a properly installed earthed socket with a 16 A-slow fuse. The portafilter support (if supplied) can be adjusted and fixed.

To operate, roasted coffee beans are poured into the bean hopper, ensuring the quantity is approximately 1 cm below the edge and not less than 2 cm to prevent dispensing fluctuations. The lid is replaced, and the sliding valve (3) is opened. The grinder is switched on using the On/Off switch (9) to position "I".

Grinding degree is selected by moving the grind adjustment handles (4) until the desired grind size is shown through the lens (5). It's important to reduce the grinding degree only while the grinder is in operation and to avoid grinding below grind size 100 and above 1000 to prevent damage.

The grinder allows for setting shot sizes based on grinding time. Users can save settings for single and double shots. The grinding time can also be controlled manually using the manual mode button (6). To set grinding time, the menu button (1) is pressed, "set dose" is selected, and the up (3) or down (7) arrows are used to choose single or double dose. The check arrow (2) confirms the selection, and grinding time is adjusted with the up (3) and down (7) buttons, then saved with the check button (2). Manual grinding starts when button (6) is pressed and continues until pressed again.

Other user-configurable settings include changing the language and setting the date and time via the menu button (1). The grinder also features a shot counter, accessible through the menu, which displays the number of grind cycles since the first activation.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the grinder's longevity and performance. The manufacturer recommends that maintenance be carried out by qualified, professional personnel.

Cleaning:

  • Surface Cleaning: The surface on which the grinder stands should be cleaned by switching off the grinder, removing the power plug, lifting the grinder by its casing with both hands, cleaning the surface and underside with a damp cloth, drying them, and then placing the grinder back.
  • Casing Cleaning: The casing, outlet (7), start button (11), and drip tray (8) should be cleaned with a brush. The casing and drip tray can be wiped with a damp cloth as needed.
  • Bean Container Cleaning: The bean container (2) should be cleaned daily to remove coffee oil residue, which can negatively affect taste. This involves closing the sliding valve (3), grinding any remaining beans until idle, releasing the locking screw with a slot screwdriver, removing the bean container, temporarily transferring beans, cleaning the container inside and out with a damp cloth, drying it, removing excess beans from the intake, repositioning the container, pushing it down, and securing it with the locking screw. Finally, the beans are poured back, and the sliding valve is opened.
  • Grinding Mechanism Cleaning: The manufacturer recommends using GRINDZ™ or CAFETTO™ cleaning products every 2-5 days to clean the grinding mechanism.

Troubleshooting:

The manual provides a troubleshooting guide for common issues:

  • Grinder not grinding/display off: Check if the power plug is inserted and if the bean container is properly inserted.
  • Thermal overcurrent circuit-breaker triggered: Check if the circuit-breaker's release button has popped out and push it back in. If it repeatedly trips, contact the supplier. Also, check the electric fuse and replace if necessary.
  • Grinder humming but not grinding: The grinding mechanism may be blocked. Turn the grind adjustment gear to the maximum and start grinding to clear it.
  • Grinder not grinding finely enough: The grinding discs may be worn out, requiring contact with the supplier.

Safety:

The manual emphasizes several safety warnings:

  • Risk of electric shock: Installation should only be done by authorized, qualified personnel. The grinder should be connected to a socket with good accessibility. The power cable and plug should be checked for damage, and if damaged, replaced by qualified personnel. The grinder should not be immersed in water or cleaned with water jets or compressed air. Wet hands should not touch the power plug.
  • Risk of injury: The appliance should not be used by children or individuals with reduced physical, sensorial, or mental abilities without supervision or training. Children should not play with the grinder or its packaging materials. The grinder should always be placed on a flat, stable surface to prevent tipping.
  • Risk of damage: Do not open the grinder casing; repairs should be left to experts. Only original appliance specifications parts should be used for repairs. Avoid using harsh cleaning products or sharp objects that can scratch the surface. Do not put components in the dishwasher. Lift the grinder only by the casing with both hands, not by the bean container.
