1. Getting to know your device
The Beurer BY 40 breast pump allows nursing mothers to express their breast milk easily and conveniently.
If not enough breast milk is taken from mothers who have recently given birth, this can lead to the pain-
ful build-up of milk, which in the worst-case scenario could cause inflammation of the nipples (mastitis).
This build-up of milk can be prevented through targeted expressing of breast milk using the breast pump.
In addition, breast pumps help to alleviate cracked or sore nipples. You can use the integrated stimulation
function to draw out flat or inverted nipples, making it easier to then pump the breast milk. The breast
pump also allows you to store breast milk in the bottle, for example if you will be travelling or away from
your baby for an extended period of time.
Babies who cannot be breast-fed directly for health reasons (due to a premature birth or cleft palate) can
still be given breast milk by using the breast pump.

Initial Use:

  1. Assembly: Screw the pump attachment onto the bottle, ensuring it is firmly secured. Insert the silicone tube into the pump attachment and the breast pump.
  2. Power: Connect the breast pump to the mains cable and insert the mains plug into the socket. Alternatively, for battery operation, open the battery compartment on the rear side of the motor unit, insert four AA batteries (included), ensuring correct polarity, and close the compartment. A single battery charge with new AA batteries lasts approximately 60 minutes at the lowest setting.
  3. Operation:
    • Wash hands and breasts thoroughly before use.
    • Sit with your upper body slightly forward, using a pillow for back support.
    • Place the breast shield with silicone cushion gently on the breast, ensuring the nipple is completely enclosed and no air pockets. The breast shield must be drawn firmly onto the breast for proper function.
    • Press the ON/OFF button to switch on. The breast pump automatically starts in stimulation mode (indicated by ◎) with a two-minute timer. Adjust stimulation intensity using the +/– buttons.
    • After two minutes, the pumping mode indicator will flash. Press the MODE button to begin pumping breast milk. Select a comfortable suction intensity using the +/– buttons.
    • If you wish to switch back to stimulation mode, press the MODE button; the stimulation and two-minute timer will restart.
    • The breast pump has a memory function, recalling the last programmed stimulation or pumping level when switched on.
    • To switch off, press the ON/OFF button.

Tips for better milk flow:

  • Choose a relaxing location and time for pumping.
  • Having your child nearby or looking at their picture can enhance milk flow.
  • If feeding from one breast, use the pump on the other simultaneously.
  • Warmth and relaxation encourage milk flow; pump after a shower or bath.
  • For swollen or sore breasts, apply a warm towel for a few minutes to improve milk flow.
  • If milk doesn't flow immediately, relax and try again later.
  • If no milk is extracted after five minutes, stop and try again later.
  • Consult a doctor if you experience sharp pains.

Storing breast milk:

  • Ensure the breast pump and container are disinfected before use.
  • Store breast milk in disinfected containers immediately after expressing; do not leave it at room temperature.
  • If freezing, mark the bottle with the date of expressing.
  • Storage periods:
    • Room temperature: Can be kept for 6 hours.
    • Refrigerator (approx. 3-5°C): Can be kept for 24 hours (do not store in the fridge door).
    • Freezer (approx. -16°C): Can be kept for 3 months.
    • Defrosted breast milk: Use immediately; can be kept for 10 hours in the refrigerator. Do not refreeze.

Feeding with breast milk:

  • Disinfect the bottle before filling it with stored breast milk.
  • To defrost, store overnight in the fridge to retain nutrients; use within 24 hours. In urgent cases, defrost in warm water.
  • Dispose of breast milk if it smells unpleasant.
  • Never heat breast milk in the microwave as it can heat unevenly and cause burns.
  • Always check food temperature before feeding.

Troubleshooting:

  • No suction: Check assembly, pump attachment placement, silicone tube insertion, suction level, and if the pump is switched on. Ensure no milk obstructs the silicone valve.
  • No milk pumped: Relax and try again. Reduce suction level if painful. Consult a doctor.
  • Pain during pumping: Reduce suction level. Consult a doctor.
  • Milk leaking: Remove and re-attach the silicone cushion, ensuring it's correctly positioned and secured. Lean your upper body slightly forward.
  • Altered/damaged components: Do not use corrosive cleaning agents. Temperature fluctuations can damage plastic. Stop using if parts are damaged.
  • Pump not switching on: Ensure correct assembly and connection to mains power.

Maintenance features:

  • Cleaning and sterilising:
    • Before first use and each use: Clean and sterilise all separate parts that come into direct contact with breast milk (except the motor unit and silicone tube) individually. Never sterilise the motor unit.
