Overview

This manual describes BINKS Air Motor Drives and Agitators for Pressure Feed Tanks, designed for use with pressure containers that supply liquid material at a constant preset pressure up to a maximum of 7.0 bar. These agitators are suitable for use with flammable coating materials and in Zone 1 classified hazardous areas, with all models certified for use in Hazardous areas, Zone 1 for areas around the tank and Zone 0 for inside the tank. The temperature class is T4 (135°C).

Function Description:

The devices covered include various models of air motor drives and agitators, each designed for specific applications with pressure feed tanks.

  • QS-5012-CE: An air motor drive with a 15:1 gear reduction. It includes air adjustment for speed control, along with a hose and fittings for connection to a tank regulator.
  • QMS-431-CE, 433-CE, and 434-CE: Agitators intended for use with the QS-5012-CE Gear reduction drive on 2, 10, and 15 gallon tank models. These can also be operated manually without a drive motor.
  • QMS-430-CE: A direct drive air motor and agitator, specifically for use on 83S-211-CE SS Pressure Feed tanks. It features air adjustment for speed control, a hose, and fittings for tank regulator connection.
  • PT-427/418-CE: A direct drive air motor for use on 83C and 83Z-211-CE pressure feed tanks.
  • PT-419/428-CE: An agitator shaft and impeller designed for use with PT-427-CE/418-CE.

Important Technical Specifications:

The agitators are CE marked in accordance with the ATEX Directive 94/9/EC for hazardous area use and the Machinery Safety Directive 98/37/EC.

  • ATEX Classification: All models are classified as II 2 G c T4 or II 1/2 G c T4.
  • Ambient Temperature Range: +1°C to 40°C (34 to 104°F).
  • Maximum Pressure: 7 bar for all agitator codes.
  • Maximum RPM:
    • QS-5012-CE, QMS-431-CE, QMS-433-CE, QMS-434-CE: 200 rpm (Max recommended: 60 rpm).
    • QMS-430-CE, PT-427-CE/418-CE, PT-419-CE/428-CE: 3000 rpm (Max recommended: 1000 rpm).
  • Materials of Construction:
    • Motor bodies, Gearbox Housing: Cast Iron.
    • End Plates, Bearing Housing & Drive Shaft: Aluminium.
    • Rotors: Cast Iron rotor, Stainless Steel Shaft (except PT-419-CE Carbon Steel).
    • Paddles: Conductive Nylon.
    • Shaft Seals: Turcon (modified PTFE).
  • End Clearances (for Air Motor):
    • Total clearance: 0.063mm (0.0025").
    • Top end clearance: 0.038mm (0.0015").

Usage Features:

  • Installation: Detailed instructions are provided for installing the QS-5012-CE gear reduction drive with agitators, QMS-431-CE/433-CE/434-CE agitators, and QMS-430-CE/PT-428-CE direct drive models onto pressure feed tanks. This includes steps for air supply connection, paddle fitting, and securing the agitator housing.
  • Air Supply: Air supplies (compressors, etc.) must be located in a non-hazardous area with a 5-micron filter on the air intake system to prevent ingress of dust or foreign material.
  • Air Motor Lubrication: An automatic air line filter/lubricator should be installed within 0.5m of the air motor, with the lubricator level with or above the motor. The reservoir should be filled with SAE 10W motor oil, and the lubricator adjusted to feed 1 drop of oil per 1400 litres (50 cfm) of air or 1 drop per minute for continuous running.
  • Operation: Before operating, the oil level in the gearbox (for QS-5012-CE) must be checked and topped up with 140 weight SAE motor oil if low. Air adjusting valves should be screwed in fully before turning on the air supply, then slowly opened to reach the desired speed.
  • Safety Precautions: The manual emphasizes reading and following all instructions and safety precautions. Key hazards include explosion due to static electricity (requiring ATEX compliance, electrical continuity checks, and grounding of metallic equipment), inhaling toxic substances (requiring MSDS compliance, adequate exhaust, and respiratory protection), and general safety (eye and ear protection, proper training). Special conditions for safe use under ATEX certification include using lubricating medium resistant to carburization with an auto ignition temperature over 185°C for T4 equipment, verifying gearbox lubricant presence, and ensuring all metallic parts are bonded to earth.

Maintenance Features:

  • Pressure Relief Procedure: Before any installation or maintenance on agitators for pressure feed tanks, the tanks must be relieved of pressure. This involves turning off the main air supply, closing the air inlet valve, and bleeding off air by turning the air relief valve thumb screw counter-clockwise until all air has escaped.
  • QS-5012-CE Preventative Maintenance:
    • Check gearbox oil level every 2 days.
    • After the first 250 hours of operation, remove the gearbox, drain the oil (when warm), and replace it as per operation instructions.
    • After 6 months or 2500 operating hours, replace the oil again.
  • All Air Motors Maintenance:
    • Lubricate the air motor as per installation instructions.
    • Check the exhaust muffler filter every 500 hours; clean or replace as necessary.
    • If the air motor runs slowly or sluggishly, flush it with Gast #AH255B Flushing Solvent or equivalent to remove contamination. This should be done in a well-ventilated area with eye protection, avoiding combustible solvents.
  • Service Checks (Troubleshooting):
    • Sluggish/Slow/Stopped Motor: Cause could be dirt/foreign object or internal corrosion. Correction: Flush or strip and rebuild motor.
    • Hot Motor/Slows Down: Cause could be misaligned vanes. Correction: Strip and rebuild motor.
    • Motor Runs Slowly: Cause could be low air pressure. Correction: Raise air pressure.
    • Motor Runs Slowly at Max Pressure: Cause could be too small/long air line bore or restricted exhaust. Correction: Use larger/shorter air line, or change muffler filter/flush motor.
  • Replacement of Parts: Detailed procedures are provided for replacing parts for QS-5012-CE, QMS-431-CE/433-CE/434-CE, QMS-430-CE/PT-428-CE/PT-419-CE, and QS-4016 Air Motor. This includes steps for disassembling and reassembling gearboxes, shafts, seals, and motor components, with specific instructions for checking wear, applying thread locking compound, and tightening fasteners to specified torques. Part lists with reference numbers, descriptions, and individual parts required are included for each model.
