Instructions for Use
Charging
1. Only use 14.6V, LiFePO4 compatible chargers to charge the battery. The charging
current should be ~6A. If you need a charger, please contact us.
2. Fully charge the battery before first use. This depends on the output of the charger but is
typically between 3-5 hours.
3. If your battery came with a Bioenno Power charger, please note that the LED light on the
battery does NOT indicate the state of charge. A red LED light means the battery is
under constant current (CC) charging and green LED means constant voltage (CV)
charging. Always charge for at least 5 hours to ensure full capacity.
4. LiFePO4 does not suffer “memory effect” so please keep the battery fully charged for daily
use. Cell balancing only occurs when the battery is fully charged (top-end balancing).
5. Do not charge the battery in temperatures below 0°C. This can cause damage to the cells.
Maintenance and Storage
The battery requires no manual maintenance due to the included PCM/BMS. However, please
follow the below guideline for best life cycle.
1. Even though the LiFePO4 chemistry is relatively stable, protect the battery from shocks
and drops to prevent internal short circuit.
2. For long term storage, fully charge the battery and then discharge to 50% of the full
capacity. Do NOT leave the battery unattended for more than 6 months.
3. For the best life cycle, avoid using the battery in extreme temperatures and avoid highly
variable pulsing loads.
Troubleshooting
Since the battery can be used in many different configurations and equipment, we cannot provide a
general troubleshooting guide. Please contact us so a technician can provide you with individualized
support.
FAQ
Q. The terminals/connectors on the battery do not fit my application, what do I do?
A. You can change the terminal/connector to whatever type you need without voiding the warranty
so long as you do not open the battery or modify the casing.
Q. I have a universal lead acid charger with high charging current, can I use it instead?
A. Not recommended. Lead acid battery charges at 2.30V to 2.45V per cell whereas LiFePO4 needs
3.60V per cell. Your battery would be undercharged so you won’t get full capacity nor will
balancing be triggered, both of which are not desired. Furthermore, the floating charge of the
lead acid charger is not expected by the battery and can cause problems.
Q. Can I buy another of the same LiFePO4 battery to double the voltage or capacity?
A. Not recommended. Refer to the series and parallel connection section. You should always get a
single battery that meets your voltage and capacity requirement to avoid problems.
Q. How come the battery stops working a few seconds after a high current draw?
A. Make sure the load is not exceeding the rated continuous output current else the PCM shuts off
the battery after 2 sec. To reset, disconnect the load and attach the charger for a few seconds. If
you need more current output, please contact us for an exchange or a custom solution.
Q. I need more help with the battery I bought.

Overview

This document describes the Bioenno Power BLP-30625ML LiFePO4 Starter Battery, a rechargeable battery designed for high-rate discharge applications, primarily starting engines and delivering short bursts of high current. It is explicitly stated that this battery is NOT FOR DEEP CYCLE APPLICATIONS.

Function Description:

The Bioenno Power BLP-30625ML is a LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery, representing an evolution in rechargeable battery technology. It is designed to be safer, non-toxic, higher performing, and longer lasting compared to traditional lead-acid batteries. The primary function of this battery is to provide the necessary power for starting engines and other applications requiring high current output in short bursts. The battery is manufactured in an ISO9001 certified facility, ensuring high quality and maximum performance.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model: BLP-30625ML
  • Chemistry: LiFePO4
  • Dimensions: 6.53 in. x 4.88 in. x 6.88 in. (166 mm x 124 mm x 175 mm)
  • Weight: 5.51 lbs. (2.5 kg.)
  • CCA Rating: 625 CCA (Cold Cranking Amps), indicating its capacity to deliver high current for engine starting.
  • Charging Voltage: 14.6V
  • Charging Current: 2A (Note: The manual also states the charging current should be ~6A, indicating a recommended charger output, while 2A might be the battery's internal charging current limit or a typical charger's output).
  • Open Circuit Voltage Range: 10-14.6VDC
  • Pb Equivalent Capacity: 30-40Ah (Ampere-hours), indicating its capacity relative to a lead-acid battery.
  • Operating Temperature: -10°C to 60°C
  • Protection: The battery includes a PCM/BMS (Protection Circuit Module/Battery Management System) that provides protection against overcharge, overdischarge, overcurrent, and temperature issues, and also handles cell balancing.
  • Terminal / Connector Type: Square Post

Usage Features:

  • Starter Application: Specifically designed for starting engines and applications requiring high current in short bursts.
  • Charging Requirements:
    • Requires a 14.6V LiFePO4 compatible charger.
    • Recommended charging current is ~6A.
    • Must be fully charged before first use, typically taking 3-5 hours depending on the charger output.
    • The LED light on Bioenno Power chargers indicates charging status (red for constant current, green for constant voltage), but does NOT indicate the battery's state of charge.
    • Always charge for at least 5 hours to ensure full capacity.
    • Charging should not occur in temperatures below 0°C to prevent cell damage.
  • Memory Effect: LiFePO4 batteries do not suffer from "memory effect," allowing them to be kept fully charged for daily use.
  • Cell Balancing: Cell balancing, a crucial process for battery longevity, only occurs when the battery is fully charged (top-end balancing).
  • Terminal/Connector Flexibility: Users can change the terminal/connector type to fit their application without voiding the warranty, provided they do not open the battery or modify its casing.
  • High Current Draw Protection: The PCM/BMS will shut off the battery after 2 seconds if the load exceeds the rated continuous output current. To reset, disconnect the load and attach the charger for a few seconds.
  • Series/Parallel Connection (Not Recommended): The manual strongly advises against connecting multiple BLP-30625ML batteries in series or parallel to double voltage or capacity. Users should ideally acquire a single battery that meets their specific voltage and capacity requirements to avoid potential problems.
  • Lead-Acid Charger Incompatibility: Not recommended for use with universal lead-acid chargers, especially those with "anti-sulfation" features. Lead-acid chargers operate at different cell voltages (2.30V-2.45V per cell) compared to LiFePO4 (3.60V per cell), leading to undercharging, lack of balancing, and potential issues from floating charges.

Maintenance Features:

  • No Manual Maintenance: The integrated PCM/BMS handles internal battery management, eliminating the need for manual maintenance.
  • Protection from Physical Damage: Protect the battery from shocks and drops to prevent internal short circuits.
  • Storage Guidelines:
    • For long-term storage, fully charge the battery and then discharge it to 50% of its full capacity.
    • Do NOT leave the battery unattended for more than 6 months.
    • Avoid using the battery in extreme temperatures and with highly variable pulsing loads for optimal life cycle.
  • Safety Precautions (Caution):
    • Do not disassemble the battery.
    • Do not short circuit positive and negative terminals.
    • Use only LiFePO4 compatible chargers; avoid lead-acid chargers, particularly those with "anti-sulfation" features.
    • Do not submerge the battery in water, as the seal is not designed to withstand water pressure.
    • Do not throw the battery in fire or dispose of it improperly.
    • Recycle the battery at a facility that accepts lithium batteries.

The document emphasizes that this battery is specifically designed for high-rate discharge and is not suitable for deep cycle applications, urging users whose intended application does not match this profile to contact Bioenno Power for further information.
