About Your Warranty

Overview

The BISSELL POWERSTEAMER™ Upright Deep Cleaner, models 1690 and 1695, is a high-tech home cleaning system designed for deep cleaning carpets, upholstery, and bare floors. It features a multi-motor SmartClean™ System for enhanced cleaning power and a SmartMix™ system that automatically adjusts the cleaning formula to specific cleaning needs. The cleaner also incorporates a floating brush suspension that adapts to all floor surfaces, and includes on-board tools for above-floor cleaning.

Function Description:

The POWERSTEAMER™ is primarily designed for deep cleaning various surfaces. For carpets, it uses a combination of hot tap water and BISSELL Fiber Cleansing Formula™ to loosen and extract dirt and stains. The machine sprays the cleaning solution onto the carpet, and then a powerful vacuum motor suctions up the soiled liquid into a Dirty Water Tank Assembly. For upholstery and small areas, the Flex Hose Assembly with specialized tools allows for targeted cleaning of delicate fabrics and hard-to-reach spots. For bare floors, the Bare Floor Cleaning Tool, used with BISSELL Floor Cleansing Formula™ (specifically for no-wax floors), cleans and vacuums up the solution. The SmartMix™ system offers three settings: "WATER ONLY" for gentle cleaning or rinsing, "NORMAL" for everyday dirt and soil, and "HIGH TRAFFIC" for heavy cleaning of entryways, hallways, and heavily soiled areas.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power: Operates on a nominal 120-volt, 60 Hz grounded electrical circuit.
  • Water Capacity: The Clean Water Tank is filled with hot (not boiling) tap water.
  • Dirty Water Tank Capacity: Holds approximately one gallon of soiled liquid. A special float device in the tank prevents the cleaner from removing solution when full, and the motor sound rises in pitch, indicating the tank needs emptying.
  • Formula: Requires BISSELL Fiber Cleansing Formula™ for carpets and upholstery, and BISSELL Floor Cleansing Formula™ for bare floors. The use of cleaning formulas containing lemon or pine oil, chemical spot cleaners, or solvent-based soil removers is warned against, as they may damage the appliance and void the warranty.
  • Hose Length: Includes a 10' Flex Hose Assembly for above-floor cleaning.
  • Grounding: The appliance must be connected to a grounded wiring system with an equipment-grounding conductor and a grounding plug.

Usage Features:

  • Assembly: The cleaner comes in two primary components: the Lower Chassis and the Handle Assembly. Assembly requires a Phillips head screwdriver to secure the handle to the chassis with two bolts and nuts. The Flex Hose Assembly, Upholstery/Carpet Tool, and Spraying Crevice Tool are then attached.
  • Pre-treating (Optional): For highly soiled carpet, the machine can be set to "PRE-TREAT" (I) position to activate the solution pump. The user presses a release pedal and pulls a trigger to spray cleaning solution over soiled areas, moving the cleaner back and forth once without overwetting. A 5-10 minute wait is recommended before full cleaning.
  • Deep Cleaning Carpet:
    • Fill the Clean Water Tank with hot tap water and the SmartMix™ Formula Tank with BISSELL Fiber Cleansing Formula™.
    • Select the desired SmartClean™ setting: WATER ONLY, NORMAL, or HIGH TRAFFIC.
    • Move the Power Switch to "CLEAN" (II).
    • Press the Release Pedal on the left side of the Lower Chassis.
    • Slowly move the cleaner back and forth over the carpet, depressing the trigger to spray solution. Repeat without the trigger to vacuum.
    • Clean in 3'x 4' sections.
    • Empty the Dirty Water Tank when it reaches the full line or when suction decreases and motor noise rises.
  • Deep Cleaning Upholstery & Small Areas:
    • Check the manufacturer's tag for cleaning codes ("W" or "WS" are suitable; "X," "S," or "Dry Clean Only" are not).
    • Tip the Handle Assembly back, remove the Flex Hose Assembly, and connect it to the Dirty Water Tank Triangle port.
    • Connect the Solution Tube Connector to the port at the lower left side of the Handle Assembly.
    • Attach the Upholstery/Carpet Tool or Spraying Crevice Tool to the Flex Hose.
    • Fill the Clean Water Tank and SmartMix™ Formula Tank as for carpet cleaning.
    • Select the SmartClean™ setting.
    • Slowly move the tool over the soiled surface, first spraying only, then spraying and vacuuming, and finally vacuuming only.
    • Empty the Dirty Water Tank as needed.
  • Deep Cleaning Bare Floors:
    • Not recommended for wood floors. Use only on no-wax floors with BISSELL Floor Cleansing Formula™.
    • Remove the Clean Water Tank and Dirty Water Tank.
    • Tip the POWERSTEAMER™ back and attach the Bare Floor Cleaning Tool to the Nozzle, ensuring the strip faces forward.
    • Fill the Clean Water Tank with hot tap water and the SmartMix™ Formula Tank with BISSELL Floor Cleansing Formula™.
    • Select the SmartClean™ setting.
    • Move the Bare Floor Cleaning Tool back and forth over the soiled surface, depressing the trigger to spray. Repeat without the trigger to vacuum.
    • Empty the Dirty Water Tank as needed.
  • Cord Quick-Release: The upper Cord Holder can be rotated to easily release the Power Cord. A clip at the back of the Handle Assembly secures the cord during use.
  • Safety Precautions: Emphasizes indoor use only, avoiding immersion, proper grounding, unplugging when not in use or during maintenance, and not handling with wet hands. Warnings are provided regarding the use of specific cleaning formulas and the importance of emptying the dirty water tank to prevent damage.

Maintenance Features:

  • Emptying and Rinsing Tanks: After use, the Clean Water Tank and Dirty Water Tank should be removed, emptied, and rinsed with clean water. The Dirty Water Tank's circular cap and triangle lid are removable for thorough cleaning.
  • Tool Cleaning: All tools should be rinsed in clean running water, dried, and stored on the machine.
  • General Cleaning: Wipe all surfaces of the cleaner with a soft cloth.
  • Storage: Store the cleaner upright in a protected, dry area. It is important not to leave clean water in the Clean Water Tank Assembly or soiled solution in the Dirty Water Tank Assembly.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides a troubleshooting guide for common issues such as reduced spray/no spray (possible causes: empty tanks, clogged nozzle, pump malfunction) and vacuum not picking up cleaning solution (possible causes: loose tank cap, misaligned tanks, unsecured hose, poor tool position, full dirty water tank).
  • Parts and Descriptions: A detailed list of part numbers and descriptions is provided for ordering replacement parts.
  • Warranty: A one-year warranty covers defects or malfunctions under personal, non-commercial use. BISSELL Inc. will repair, replace, or refund the product. Consumer Services contact information is provided for warranty claims and service referrals.
