Do you have a question about the Black & Decker BDCDD220C and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document is an instruction manual for the BLACK+DECKER 20V MAX* Cordless Drill, model number BDCDD220C. It provides safety guidelines, functional descriptions, operating instructions, maintenance information, and troubleshooting tips for the drill and its associated battery and charger systems.

Function Description

The BLACK+DECKER 20V MAX* Cordless Drill is a versatile power tool designed for drilling in wood, metal, and plastics, as well as for screwdriving tasks. It features a variable speed switch, forward/reverse button, torque adjustment collar, keyless chuck, dual range gearing, and an integrated LED work light. The cordless design, powered by a 20V MAX* Lithium-Ion battery pack, offers portability and convenience. The tool is intended for home use and is not designed for commercial applications.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Voltage: 20V MAX* (Maximum initial battery pack voltage measured without a workload is 20 volts; measured under a workload, nominal voltage is 18).
  • Power Source: Battery-operated (cordless).
  • Charger Compatibility: Designed to work with specific BLACK+DECKER 20V MAX* chargers (LCS200, LCS1620, LCS201, L2AFC, L2AFCBST, BDCAC202B).
  • Battery Compatibility: Uses specific BLACK+DECKER 20V MAX* battery packs (LBX20, LBXR20, LBXR20BT, LBXR2020, LBXR2520, LB2X3020, LB2X4020).
  • Chuck Type: Keyless chuck.
  • Gearing: Dual range gearing for different speed and torque requirements.
  • Torque Control: Adjustable collar for selecting operating mode (drilling or screwdriving) and setting torque.

Usage Features

  • Variable Speed Switch: The drill's speed is controlled by the trigger switch; the farther it's depressed, the higher the speed.
  • Forward/Reverse Button: This button determines the direction of rotation (forward for driving, reverse for removing fasteners) and also acts as a lock-off button to prevent accidental starting. The center position locks the tool in the off position.
  • Torque Adjustment Collar: Allows users to select between drilling mode (indicated by a drill symbol) and various torque settings for screwdriving. Higher torque settings are needed for larger screws and harder materials.
  • Keyless Chuck: Enables quick and easy insertion and removal of drill bits and other accessories without a key. To insert, grasp the rear half of the chuck and rotate the front half counterclockwise. Insert the accessory, then tighten by holding the rear half and rotating the front portion clockwise.
  • Dual Range Gearing: Provides two speed/torque ranges:
    • Low Speed, High Torque (Position 1): Selected by sliding the gear shifter button away from the chuck. Ideal for heavy-duty screwdriving and drilling large holes.
    • High Speed, Low Torque (Position 2): Selected by sliding the gear shifter button towards the chuck. Suitable for faster drilling and lighter tasks.
    • It is crucial to change gears only when the tool is off and stopped.
  • LED Work Light: An integrated LED light automatically illuminates the work area when the trigger switch is pulled, improving visibility in dimly lit conditions. It should not be used as a flashlight.
  • On-Board Bit Holder: A convenient holder for screwdriver bits is built into the tool, located just above the battery pack.
  • Battery Installation/Removal: Battery packs are inserted into the tool until an audible click is heard, ensuring full seating and latching. To remove, the battery release button is depressed, and the pack is pulled out.
  • Drilling Techniques:
    • Use sharp drill bits appropriate for the material.
    • Support and secure the workpiece.
    • Start drilling slowly with light pressure to prevent slipping.
    • Apply consistent pressure in a straight line with the bit, ensuring it bites without stalling the motor.
    • Reduce pressure when breaking through to minimize stalling.
    • Keep the motor running when pulling the bit out of a drilled hole to reduce jamming.
    • For metal, use a cutting lubricant (except for cast iron and brass, which are drilled dry).
    • For masonry, use carbide-tipped bits and maintain even force.

Maintenance Features

  • Cleaning: The tool should be cleaned with mild soap and a damp cloth. No liquids should enter the tool, and it should never be immersed in liquid.
  • Repairs: All repairs, maintenance, and adjustments (beyond those described in the manual) should be performed by authorized service centers or qualified service personnel using identical replacement parts to ensure product safety and reliability.
  • Battery Charging:
    • Chargers are designed specifically for BLACK+DECKER battery packs.
    • Plug the charger into an appropriate outlet, then insert the battery pack.
    • A flashing green LED indicates charging, while a continuously lit green LED signifies a full charge.
    • Batteries should be recharged as soon as possible after use and not fully discharged to maximize battery life.
    • Optimal charging temperature is between 65°F and 75°F (18°- 24°C). Avoid charging in temperatures below 40°F (4.5°C) or above 105°F (40.5°C).
    • The charger includes diagnostics for bad batteries (indicated by a red LED flashing in a specific pattern) and hot/cold pack delays (suspending charging until the battery normalizes).
    • The charger and battery pack can be left connected indefinitely, as the charger maintains a full charge.
  • Battery Pack Care:
    • Do not incinerate battery packs.
    • Do not force battery packs into non-compatible chargers.
    • Avoid charging or using batteries in explosive atmospheres.
    • If battery contents contact skin or eyes, wash with soap and water or rinse with water, respectively, and seek medical attention if necessary.
    • Do not splash or immerse batteries in water.
    • Store batteries away from extreme temperatures (below 40°F or above 105°F/40°C).
    • Never attempt to open a battery pack. Return cracked or damaged packs to a service center for recycling.
    • When transporting batteries, ensure terminals are protected from short circuits by conductive materials.
  • Accessory Use: Only recommended accessories should be used with the tool. For assistance, contact BLACK+DECKER customer service.
  • Recycling: The RBRC® Seal on Lithium-Ion batteries indicates that BLACK+DECKER participates in the Call 2 Recycle® program, facilitating the environmentally conscious recycling of spent batteries. Users are encouraged to return spent batteries to authorized service centers or retailers.
