Overview

The Black & Decker Cyclone Powerfile (Catalog Number CYPF260) is an instruction manual for a power tool designed for sanding and filing tasks. This manual provides comprehensive information on the tool's functional description, safety guidelines, technical specifications, usage instructions, and maintenance procedures.

Functional Description

The Cyclone Powerfile features several key components for its operation:

  • On/off switch (1): To power the tool on and off.
  • Lock-on button (2): For continuous operation without holding the trigger.
  • Secondary handle / motor (3): Provides an additional grip for better control and houses the motor.
  • Sanding arm (4): The main working part where the sanding belt is mounted.
  • Belt tensioning lever (5): Used to adjust the tension of the sanding belt.
  • Belt tracking knob (6): Allows for adjustment of the sanding belt's alignment on the arm.
  • Variable speed control knob (7): Enables users to adapt the tool's speed to different workpiece materials and tasks.
  • Dust canister (8): Collects dust generated during sanding, primarily for non-metallic materials.
  • Deflector (9): Used instead of the dust canister when working with metallic materials to direct sparks away from the user.

Important Technical Specifications

The power tool operates on a standard household power supply.

  • Voltage: 120V AC (or 120V AC/DC for models with dual ratings).
  • Frequency: 60 Hz.
  • Ampere Rating: The manual includes a table for selecting the correct extension cord gauge based on ampere rating (e.g., 0-6A requires 18 AWG, 6-10A requires 18 AWG, 10-12A requires 16 AWG, 12-16A requires 14 AWG for 0-25 feet).
  • Sanding Belts: Uses 1/2 inch x 18 inch (13mm x 457mm) sanding belts.

Usage Features

The Cyclone Powerfile is designed for various sanding applications, with specific instructions for optimal use:

Adjustments:

  • Attaching/Removing Sanding Arms (Fig. B): Loosen/remove the belt tracking knob (6), ensure the spring (10) is in place, position the arm (4), and then tighten the knob. Reversing these steps removes the arm.
  • Attaching/Removing Sanding Belts (Fig. C): Move the belt tensioning lever (5) to the front (A), ensure belt arrows match housing arrows (13), place the belt (11) over front (12) and rear (14) pulleys, then move the lever to the rear (B). To remove, reverse the process.
  • Adjusting Belt Tracking (Fig. D): Switch the tool on (1) and turn the belt tracking knob (6) until the belt runs straight along the arm.
  • Attaching/Removing Dust Canister or Deflector (Fig. E): Align and slide the dust canister (8) or deflector (9) onto the tool until securely located. Pull to remove.

Operation:

  • Variable Speed Control (Fig. G): Use low speed for fine grit, plastics, ceramics, or painted/varnished surfaces. Use high speed for coarse grit or heavy material removal. Adjust with knob (7).
  • Switching On/Off (Fig. H): Press on/off switch (1) to turn on. Release to turn off. For continuous operation, press (1), then lock-on button (2), then release (1). To turn off continuous operation, press and release (1).
  • Dust Collection: The dust canister (8) is for non-metallic materials. The deflector (9) is for metallic materials (to direct sparks away). Never use the dust canister or vacuum when sanding wood with nails or metal surfaces due to fire hazard. Do not sand magnesium surfaces or wet surfaces.
  • Emptying Dust Cassette (Fig. E): Empty every 10 minutes. Pull cassette (15) off, twist cover (17) counter-clockwise to remove, shake contents out, replace cover clockwise, and refit cassette.
  • Applications: The straight arm (Fig. I) is suitable for general use, slotting, and making joints.

Hints for Optimum Use:

  • Always hold the tool with two hands.
  • Do not exert excessive pressure.
  • Regularly check and replace sanding belts.
  • Always sand with the grain of the wood.
  • Start the sander before contact with the workpiece and lift it off before switching off.
  • Clamp the workpiece to a stable surface when possible.
  • Use extra fine grit for new paint layers.
  • For uneven surfaces or paint removal, start with coarse grit and gradually change to fine grit.
  • Refer to the material-specific belt grit suggestions (e.g., Solid Wood: 80, Veneer: 150, Steel: 80 (remove dust canister)).

Maintenance Features

  • Tool Care: Avoid excessive force to prevent overload and motor damage. Keep air cooling vents clear. If the tool overheats, run it without load for two minutes.
  • Cleaning: Turn off and unplug the tool before cleaning. Use a clean, dry paint brush to clear vents and ducts. Clean housings with a clean damp cloth (avoid solvents, gas, or turpentine).
  • Cleaning Dust Cassette Filter (Fig. E): The filter (16) is reusable and should be cleaned regularly. Empty the cassette (15), pull off the filter (16), tap excess dust into a dustbin, replace the filter, fit the cover (17), and re-secure the cassette. Do not brush, use compressed air, sharp objects, or wash the filter.
  • Service: All repairs, maintenance, and adjustments should be performed by authorized service centers using identical replacement parts to ensure safety and reliability.

Safety Guidelines:

The manual emphasizes safety with DANGER, WARNING, CAUTION, and NOTICE symbols. Key safety rules include:

  • Work Area Safety: Keep the work area clean, well-lit, and free of flammable materials. Keep children and bystanders away.
  • Electrical Safety: Use matching plugs and outlets, avoid body contact with grounded surfaces, do not expose to rain/wet conditions, do not abuse the cord, use outdoor-rated extension cords outdoors, and use a GFCI-protected supply in damp locations.
  • Personal Safety: Stay alert, wear eye protection (ANSI Z87.1), hearing protection (ANSI S12.6), and NIOSH/OSHA respiratory protection, especially when operating in dusty conditions. Prevent unintentional starting. Remove adjusting keys/wrenches before turning on. Dress properly (no loose clothing/jewelry).
  • Dust Hazards: Dust from sanding, sawing, grinding, and drilling can contain chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm (e.g., lead, crystalline silica, arsenic, chromium). Work in well-ventilated areas and use approved dust masks. Avoid prolonged contact with dust.
  • Lead-Based Paint: Sanding lead-based paint is not recommended due to contamination risks. If sanding any paint, ensure no children or pregnant women are in the work area, wear a dust mask/respirator, and avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in the work area.
  • Fire Hazard: Empty the dust canister frequently, especially when sanding surface coatings (polyurethane, linseed oil). Do not use the dust canister or vacuum when sanding wood with nails or metal surfaces due to spark generation; use the deflector instead.
