Overview

This document describes the Black & Decker GT20/GT25 hedgetrimmer, a tool designed for trimming hedges, shrubs, and brambles, intended for consumer use.

Function Description

The Black & Decker GT20/GT25 hedgetrimmer is a mains-powered tool equipped with a double switching system for safety. This system requires both the front handle switch (1) and the trigger switch (2) to be squeezed simultaneously for operation, preventing unintentional starting. Releasing either switch will turn the tool off. The tool features a blade (4) and a blade sheath (5) for protection when not in use. A guard (3) is also included and must be fitted before use to ensure safe operation. The tool is designed to cut effectively, with blades that can be slightly tilted (0-15°) relative to the line of cut to enhance cutting performance. The double-sided blade allows for cutting in either direction.

Usage Features

Assembly and Setup: Before using the hedgetrimmer, ensure it is switched off and unplugged. The guard (3) must be placed onto the tool and secured using the two supplied screws (6). It is crucial never to use the tool without the guard. The cable retention system (fig. C) helps manage the mains cable by feeding it through an opening and securing it around pegs, preventing accidental cutting or entanglement.

Operating the Tool: To switch on the hedgetrimmer, squeeze both the front handle switch (1) and the trigger switch (2). To switch off, release either switch. Never attempt to lock a switch in the "on" position. The tool should be allowed to work at its own pace and not be overloaded. When operating, carefully guide the cable to avoid cutting it; a recommended method is to place the cable over your shoulder.

Trimming Techniques: For optimal results, slightly tilt the tool (up to 15° relative to the line of cut) so that the blade tips point towards the hedge. Begin by trimming the top of the hedge, holding the tool at the desired angle and moving it steadily along the line of cut. To achieve a very straight cut, a piece of string can be stretched along the hedge at the desired height as a guideline, cutting just above it. For flat sides, cut upwards with the growth; cutting downwards can cause shallow patches in the hedge as younger stems move outwards.

Safety Precautions During Use: Always wear safety glasses or goggles, gloves, and ear protection when operating the tool. Keep children, visitors, and animals away from the work area and the tool. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery that could get caught in moving parts. Prevent body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces. Do not overreach and maintain proper footing and balance. Stay alert and do not operate the tool when tired. Secure the workpiece if applicable. Always check for damaged parts before use and ensure the switch operates correctly. Unplug the tool when not in use, before changing parts, or before servicing. Avoid unintentional starting by ensuring the tool is switched off when plugging in. Do not abuse the cord; keep it away from heat, oil, and sharp edges. Store the tool in a dry, locked-up, high place, out of reach of children.

Specific Hedgetrimmer Safety: Keep the cable away from the blades. Never touch the blades while the tool is running. Do not force the blades to a standstill. Do not put the tool down until the blades have come to a complete standstill. Regularly check blades for damage and wear; do not use worn or damaged blades. Avoid hard objects like metal wire or railings, as these can damage the blades. If the tool accidentally hits an object or starts to vibrate abnormally, switch it off immediately and check for damage. If the tool stalls, switch it off and unplug it before attempting to remove obstructions. After use, always place the blade sheath over the blades and store the tool safely. Ensure all guards are fitted and never use an incomplete or modified tool.

Maintenance Features

General Maintenance: The Black & Decker hedgetrimmer is designed for long-term operation with minimal maintenance, provided proper care and regular cleaning are performed. Before any maintenance, always switch off and unplug the tool.

Blade Care: After each use, carefully clean the blades. To prevent rusting, apply a film of light machine oil to the blades after cleaning. Regularly oil the blades during use to maintain performance.

Tool Cleaning: Regularly clean the ventilation slots in the tool using a soft brush or dry cloth. Clean the motor housing with a damp cloth; do not use abrasive or solvent-based cleaners.

Repairs and Service: This tool complies with relevant safety requirements, and repairs should only be carried out by qualified persons using original spare parts. Attempting repairs yourself or using unauthorised parts can be dangerous. If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by an authorised repair agent. For warranty claims or service, contact an authorised Black & Decker repair agent. Information on repair agents and after-sales service is available through local offices or online at www.2helpU.com.

Electrical Safety: The electric motor is designed for a specific voltage; always check that the power supply matches the rating plate. The tool is double insulated, meaning no earth wire is required. If the mains plug needs replacing (U.K. & Ireland only), ensure it is a 13 Ampere BS1363A approved plug with the correct fuse. Connect brown wire to Live (L) and blue wire to Neutral (N). Ensure the cable restraint holds the outer sheath firmly and leads are fixed at terminal screws. Always use an approved extension cable suitable for outdoor use and unwind it completely from a cable reel. Never use a light socket for power.
