Do you have a question about the Blue Sea Systems Sure Eject 7850 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document describes the Blue Sea Systems 120V AC Shore Power Disconnect, specifically models 7850, 785001, 7851, and 7851001. This device is designed to automatically disconnect shore power upon an incident to prevent damage.

Function Description

The 120V AC Shore Power Disconnect serves as a safety device for marine and RV applications, automatically disconnecting shore power when an incident occurs to prevent damage to the vessel's electrical system. It features a motor-driven design that ensures years of reliable operation and eliminates the need for manual lifting or locking mechanisms. The device is equipped with a keyed plug design for easy insertion and removal, and an automatic weather-resistant boot that protects the connection.

The unit incorporates LED indicators to provide visual feedback on its status:

  • Green LED: Indicates the AC connector is inserted and AC power is properly passing through the Sure Eject unit and supplying power to the vehicle.
  • Red LED (Solid): Indicates the AC connector is inserted but AC power is not passing through the SureEject.
  • Red LED (Flashing): Indicates a connector jam, meaning the SureEject is attempting an ejection.
  • LED Off: Indicates the connector is not inserted or AC power is not connected to the SureEject.

Important Technical Specifications

Electrical Specifications:

  • Operating Voltage Range: 4.5V-18V DC
  • Nominal Voltage: 120V AC
  • DC Current: 0.5A max (ejection), <50mA (standby)
  • Installation Screws: #8-32 (Max. Torque: 11 in-lb)
  • Mounting Screws: #8-32 (Max. Torque: 10 in-lb)
  • Temperature Range: -40°C to 55°C

Physical Dimensions:

  • Ejection Unit: 3.6" (91mm) diameter, 2.05" (52mm) depth from mounting surface.
  • Terminal Side View: 3.5" (89mm) width, 2.05" (52mm) depth from mounting surface.
  • Mounting Surface Thickness: The device is designed for various mounting surface thicknesses. For 1/8" (3.2mm) thickness, use #8-32 x 1.0" (1") screws. For 1/4" (6.4mm) thickness, use #8-32 x 1.25" (1-1/4") screws. For 3/8" (9.5mm) thickness, use #8-32 x 1.25" (1-1/4") screws. For 1/2" (13mm) thickness, use #8-32 x 1.375" (1-3/8") screws.
  • Mounting Hole Depth: Minimum 1.25" (3.17mm).

Compatibility:

  • Compatible with existing 15A and 20A connectors in the station.
  • Compatible with all existing shore power cords.
  • Connectors included: 7840 (15A) or 7841 (20A).
  • Replacement boots available: 7820 (Black), 7821 (White), 7822 (Blue), 7823 (Red), 7824 (Yellow), 7825 (Gray).

Usage Features

Installation: The installation process involves mounting the Sure Eject unit and connecting the wiring.

  1. Mounting: The unit must be mounted vertically (+/- 15°) as shown in the diagram, in a nominally dry and protected location. The mounting surface should be appropriate for the desired thickness.
  2. Wiring: Connections must include appropriate drip and service loops.
    • AC Safety Ground: Connects to the vehicle chassis ground.
    • AC Neutral: Connects to the vehicle neutral conductor.
    • Black 12/10 AWG: Connects to the AC line (ungrounded conductor).
    • 16 AWG (Red): Connects to the 10A fuse, then to the engine start (solenoid circuit).
    • 16 AWG (Black): Connects to the negative terminal of the battery DC.
    • 16 AWG (White): Connects to the positive terminal of the battery DC.
    • #8-32 Termination Screws: Max torque 10 in-lbs.
  3. Ejection Unit: The ejection unit (item 5) is mounted externally or exposed to weather elements. Installation with the weather-resistant boot (included) is recommended.
  4. Cover: Route wires through the cover.
  5. Boot: Ensure the weather-resistant boot over the ejection unit wires exit at the bottom.
  6. Sealant: Apply sealant to shrink cover in place before or after installation.

Operation: The device automatically disconnects shore power when an incident occurs. The keyed plug design allows for easy insertion and removal of the shore power cord. The LED indicators provide immediate visual feedback on the device's status, allowing users to quickly identify if power is flowing correctly or if there's an issue like a connector jam.

Maintenance Features

Replacement Parts:

  • Installation Screws: #8-32 (4 packs included).
  • Gasket: Quantity 2 included.
  • AC/DC Termination Cover: Included.
  • Connector: 120V AC.
  • Weather-resistant Boot: Included.
  • Nylon Crimp Ring Terminals: 12-10 AWG (4 packs).
  • Water-resistant Dielectric Grease Packet: 2 grams (2 packets).

Troubleshooting:

  • Incorrect Screw Length: If incorrect screw length is used, it may damage the ejection unit. Do not use screws that will penetrate the Ejection Unit's mounting holes deeper than 3/8". If the vehicle wall/mounting surface material is less than 1/8" thick, shim with extra 1/8" thick gasket (included).
  • Connector Jam: If the red LED is flashing, it indicates a connector jam. The SureEject is attempting an ejection.

General Maintenance:

  • Regularly check the weather-resistant boot for wear and tear.
  • Ensure all connections are secure and free from corrosion.
  • Refer to the Blue Sea Systems website for more information and support.
