Overview

This document is the 2020 BMW Maintenance booklet, providing essential information for maintaining BMW vehicles.

Function Description:

This manual serves as a comprehensive guide for BMW owners, detailing recommended maintenance services, intervals, and the functionality of the BMW Maintenance System. It aims to help owners keep their vehicles in optimal operational performance, road-safety, and reliability. The document outlines what is covered under the BMW Ultimate Care Scheduled Maintenance Program, what is excluded, and provides information on program upgrades and extensions. It also includes a section for owner/driver information and contact details for BMW centers.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model Year: 2020 BMW vehicles.
  • Engine Oil: 2020 model year vehicles are factory-filled with BMW-approved fully synthetic oil for gasoline engines. Engine oil should be changed when the engine is at operating temperature.
  • Long-Term Rated Fluids and Oils: Systems and assemblies are factory-filled with long-term rated fluid and oil. Fluid replacement is generally only necessary when repairs are performed, unless otherwise noted. This includes engine cooling system (antifreeze/coolant), automatic and manual transmissions, and all-wheel drive transfer cases (except when indicated by the vehicle).
  • Maintenance System: All BMW vehicles are equipped with an integrated BMW Maintenance System that uses sensors and algorithms, along with elapsed time and driving distance/profile, to monitor and evaluate maintenance needs and dynamically adapt service task intervals.
  • Service Data Storage: Maintenance service task status information is continually updated and stored in the vehicle's remote control key.
  • 1200 Mile Running-In Service: Applicable to BMW M vehicles (M2, M4, M5, M8, X3 M, X4 M, X5 M, X6 M) only, indicated as "Break-In Inspection" in the Control Display. This service includes changing engine oil and oil filter, changing rear axle differential oil, bleeding the intercooler reservoir (M4 only), and deactivating the running-in check using a diagnostic tool.
  • Maintenance Service Intervals (General):
    • Engine Oil Service: Change engine oil and oil filter.
    • Every 2nd Engine Oil Service (approx. 20,000 mi): Replace microfilter for optional 5-zone automatic climate control (X7 only), replace ventilation microfilter (All models), replace battery in remote control keys (All models).
    • Every 3rd Engine Oil Service (approx. 30,000 mi): Replace air filter element (more often in dusty conditions) (M550i, 750i, M760i, and All other models), replace spark plugs (All models).
    • Every 4th Engine Oil Service (approx. 40,000 mi): No specific additional items listed beyond the standard engine oil service.
    • Every 5th Engine Oil Service (approx. 50,000 mi): Change fluid in the rear axle differential (All models), change fluid in the transfer case (M5, M8 only).
    • Every 6th Engine Oil Service (approx. 60,000 mi): Replace spark plugs (All models), replace battery in remote control keys (All models).
    • Oxygen Sensor: Replacement recommended at 150,000 miles (All models).
  • Brake Fluid: Replacement is a covered service.
  • Brakes (Front and Rear): Replace brake pads, clean brake pad contact points in calipers. Check surface and thickness of brake discs; replace as necessary. Visually check M Carbon Ceramic Brakes for wear using surface wear indicators (M4, M5, M8 for front; All M models for rear). Parking brake shoes/linings are repaired/replaced only if effectiveness is reduced and are excluded from the Maintenance Program if fitted.
  • Vehicle Check: Includes checking horn, headlight flasher, hazard warning flashers, instrument and control lighting, heater/air-conditioning blower, lighting system (turn signals, back-up, license plate, interior, glovebox, luggage area lights), safety belts, windshield wipers and washer jet positions, tire tread depth, wear pattern, outer condition, inflation pressure (including spare), 12V Battery state of charge, SRS airbag units for damage, convertible top/retractable hardtop operation (2, 4 Series, M4), rear-view mirrors and camera, engine coolant level and concentration, windshield washer and intensive cleaning systems protection level and fluid level, water drain cavities for debris, Mobility System sealant bottle expiration date, charging cable for damage/wear, charging cable port for damage/wear, and brake system connections and lines for leaks/damage/positioning.
  • Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM): Reset is covered when done in conjunction with a scheduled maintenance service.
  • Exclusions: Front/rear "standard" and carbon ceramic brake pads and discs, parking brake shoes/linings, wiper blade assemblies and inserts, engine drive belt, manual transmission clutch assembly, gasoline fuel/additives/fuel filter, DMTL and NVLD system filters, "topping off" low fluids (except with covered service), tires and wheels/rims, wheel alignment, tire balancing and rotation (except TPM reset with covered service), wear and tear of soft trim items, damage from negligence/improper operation/driving habits/conditions/repair/environmental influences/accidents/fire/road salt corrosion/alteration/non-genuine parts/improper fuel, altered VIN/odometer irregularities.

Usage Features:

  • Owner/Driver Information: Dedicated section for recording personal and vehicle details.
  • Maintenance Service Display: The in-vehicle display provides access to the current status of maintenance tasks (Engine oil, Vehicle check, Front/Rear brake pads, Brake fluid, 1,200 Mile running-in service). It shows future dates (month/year) or remaining miles.
  • iDrive Control Display: Allows viewing of current service item status and additional service/maintenance information. Navigation through the iDrive system involves opening the start menu, pressing the controller for the i-menu, selecting "Vehicle Info" or "CAR," and then "Vehicle status" and "Service required" or "Service schedule."
  • Symbols: The display uses symbols to indicate service status: "OK" for no service required, a triangle for approaching deadlines, and a crossed-out triangle for passed deadlines.
  • Remote Control Key: Stores maintenance service task status information, which can be accessed by authorized BMW centers using a key reader to generate a customized maintenance checklist.
  • BMW Driver's Guide App: A customized Owner's Manual app optimized for smartphones and tablets, available offline from App Store® or Google Play Store®.

Maintenance Features:

  • Authorized BMW Center Recommendation: BMW recommends all maintenance and repair work be performed by an authorized BMW center.
  • Dynamic Maintenance Intervals: The BMW Maintenance System dynamically adapts service intervals based on operational and driving conditions, not just fixed time or mileage.
  • Combined Services: Certain maintenance tasks (Cabin Microfilter(s), Engine air filter(s), Spark plugs, Final drive oil) are identified as needing to be performed in conjunction with specific "Engine oil" service tasks.
  • Vehicle Storage Considerations: Disconnecting the battery during long-term storage interrupts time-dependent maintenance calculations. BMW recommends having time-based services (brake fluid, engine oil, cabin microfilter) brought up to date by an authorized BMW center after such periods.
  • Regular Checks by Vehicle Operator: BMW recommends regular checks by the operator, such as when refueling, for washer fluid level, engine oil level, coolant level, brake fluid level, and tire pressure/condition/wear.
  • BMW Ultimate Care Scheduled Maintenance Program: Covers factory-recommended maintenance services for 36 months or 36,000 miles (whichever comes first) for the first purchaser/owner/lessee of a new 2020 vehicle from an authorized BMW center in the US (including Puerto Rico). Coverage begins on the date of first retail sale or in-service date.
  • Program Qualification: Generally non-transferable, with an exception for household transfers (current or former spouse/spousal equivalent, child, sibling, parent, grandparent, or grandchild).
  • Maintenance Program Upgrade and Extension Options (BMW Ultimate Care +): Available for purchase to add transferability, enhance, or extend coverage.
