Overview

The Breville Smart Grill™ Pro (BGR840) is a versatile indoor grilling appliance designed for precision cooking and ease of use. It functions as a contact grill, panini press, and can open flat into a BBQ mode, offering a 1650 sq. cm grilling surface. This adaptability allows users to sear meats, cook eggs, pancakes, and vegetables, or prepare sandwiches and open melts.

Function Description

The core function of the Smart Grill™ Pro is to cook food using direct heat from two cooking plates. It features a 2400-watt embedded heating element system with Element IQ™ technology, which uses sensors to detect temperature drops and inject heat for rapid recovery, ensuring consistent cooking temperatures and reduced preheating times.

A key feature is the integrated probe with Smart Settings, designed to achieve consistent doneness results for various meats. The grill comes with five pre-programmed meat settings (Beef, Lamb, Pork, Poultry, Fish), each with pre-set temperatures for different doneness levels (Rare, Medium Rare, Medium, Well Done). When using the probe, the grill guides the user through selecting the meat type and desired doneness. The probe is inserted into the thickest part of the meat, and the LCD screen displays the current internal temperature and the target temperature.

The grill also incorporates a "REST MEAT" indicator, which alerts the user to remove the meat from the grill before it reaches the final SET TEMP. This accounts for residual heat (carry-over cooking) during the resting phase, preventing overcooking and ensuring juicier results.

For general grilling without the probe, the appliance offers a Temperature Dial with specific modes: SEAR (210°C-230°C) for fast preheating and searing, PANINI (sandwich) (180°C-205°C), and LOW (160°C-175°C), along with the ability to select alternative temperatures in 5°C increments. The LCD screen illuminates orange during preheating and stops flashing once the selected temperature is reached.

The grill's design allows for multiple cooking configurations:

  • Contact Grill Mode: The top plate rests on the food, cooking both sides simultaneously. This mode is optimized for use with the integrated probe and Smart Settings, particularly when the PLATE TEMP dial is set to SEAR.
  • Panini Press Mode: Similar to contact grill mode, but often used with the Adjustable Height Control Clip to gently rest the top plate on delicate foods like sandwiches or artisan breads, accommodating varying thicknesses.
  • Open Flat BBQ Mode: The grill opens flat to create a large, open grilling surface. In this mode, the ribbed plate is ideal for searing meats, while the flat plate is suitable for eggs, pancakes, and vegetables. While the probe can be used in BBQ mode, it's noted that additional cooking time may be required, and regular flipping of meat is recommended for best results.

Usage Features

  • Adjustable Height Control: A clip on the right side of the top plate allows the user to fix the top plate at various positions above the bottom plate. This reduces the weight on delicate foods and accommodates different food thicknesses, making it suitable for open melts or cooking fish without crushing it.
  • Adjustable Plate Tilt: A dial on the lower back, right side of the grill allows adjustment of the cooking plates' angle. This feature is useful for draining fats into the integrated drip tray for healthier cooking. The plates can also be set to a flat position, which is recommended for cooking eggs, pancakes, Turkish bread, focaccias, and leaner meats.
  • Temperature Conversion Button: Located on the left side of the LCD screen, this button allows users to switch the temperature display between Celsius (default) and Fahrenheit. The selected unit remains in memory until the button is pressed again or the grill is unplugged.
  • Sound Alert: The grill provides audible alerts, for example, when preheating is complete or when the "REST MEAT" indicator is activated.
  • Probe Storage: The integrated probe has a dedicated storage area on the right-hand side of the grill, with a loop for wrapping the cord, ensuring easy storage and preventing tangles.
  • Auto Shut-off: The grill automatically stops heating the cooking plates after 1 hour of inactivity, enhancing safety and energy efficiency.
  • Cord Storage: Located on the underside of the grill, providing a neat solution for storing the power cord when not in use.

Maintenance Features

  • Removable, Interchangeable Plates: Both the top and bottom cooking plates can be independently removed using the "PLATE RELEASE" buttons. This facilitates easy cleaning and allows for interchanging plate positions if desired (e.g., placing the ribbed plate on top or bottom). The plates are made of cast aluminum with a PFOA-free titanium-infused Quantanium™ non-stick coating for scratch resistance and oil-free cooking.
  • Integrated, Removable Drip Tray: This tray slides out from the front of the grill to catch excess fat and juices during cooking, promoting healthier meals and simplifying cleanup. Its unique design ensures fat drains from both plates into the same tray when in BBQ mode.
  • Cleaning Instructions: The manual provides clear instructions for cleaning the probe, outer body, drip tray, and cooking plates after each use to prevent residue build-up. It emphasizes using a soft, damp sponge with a non-abrasive liquid cleanser and avoiding metal or sharp utensils to protect the non-stick coating. Stubborn residue on plates can be removed with a non-abrasive plastic scouring pad or nylon washing brush.
  • Error Modes: The LCD screen displays specific error codes (Erl, Er2, Er3) to indicate issues such as incorrectly inserted cooking plates, excessive probe temperature, or overheat protection. The manual provides troubleshooting steps for each error, guiding users on how to resolve common problems.
  • Storage: The grill can be stored flat or in an upright position. For upright storage, the cooking plates should be locked together using the adjustable height control clip in the "LOCK" position, and the probe cord wrapped around its storage area.

The Breville Smart Grill™ Pro is designed to be a user-friendly and efficient appliance, offering precise temperature control and versatile cooking options, all while prioritizing safety and ease of maintenance.
