  • Airflow: Minimum 150 LFPM at 55°C (ambient) without M.2 drives. Additional airflow is required for M.2 drives to keep the SAS3808 IOC processor's junction temperature at 105°C or less. M.2 drive heat sinks may be necessary.

Power Supply Requirements:

  • Power Source: Supplied through the PCIe 3.3V rail (3.3V ± 9%) and the 12V rail (12V ± 8%).
  • Onboard Regulator: Switching regulator circuitry operates from 3.3V and 12V rails.
  • M.2 Drive Power: Each M.2 drive may use a maximum of 11.55W, powered from the 12V rail.
  • SAS3808 Core Power: Powered from the 3.3V rail, requiring approximately 6W.
  • Total Power: Adapter might draw more than 25W total (limit of some x8 slots). Many systems combine 12V and 3.3V rails to supply up to 35W (25W from 12V, 10W from 3.3V). Total power depends on M.2 SSDs used.
  • Typical Power (two 500 GB x4 NVMe PCIe 16GT/s drives): PCIe 3.3V: 6W, PCIe +12V: 11.5W, Total power: 17.5W.
  • Measurement Conditions: Typical power is measured with maximum I/O traffic, typical silicon process material, and nominal voltages operating the card at an ambient temperature of 45°C with required airflow.

Usage Features:

Operating System Support:

The adapter supports a wide range of operating systems, including:

  • Microsoft Windows
  • VMware vSphere/ESXi
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux
  • SuSE Linux
  • Ubuntu Linux
  • Citrix XenServer
  • CentOS Linux
  • Debian Linux
  • Oracle Enterprise Linux

Installation:

  1. Unpacking: Carefully unpack and inspect the adapter for damage.
  2. Power Off: Turn off the computer power, disconnect the AC power cord, and remove the computer cover.
  3. Connector Review: Refer to the adapter's connector and LED designations for proper identification.
  4. Mounting Bracket: Replace the full-profile mounting bracket with the supplied low-profile bracket if required, using an ESD-safe No. 1 Phillips screwdriver. Ensure proper torque (4.8 ± 0.5 inch-pounds) to avoid damage.
  5. Stand-offs: Install the black plastic stand-offs in the appropriate holes for the M.2 drive length.
  6. M.2 Drive Installation: Install M.2 SSDs into the adapter's connectors and secure them with fasteners.
  7. PCIe Slot Insertion: Insert the adapter into an available PCIe slot, aligning the bus connector and pressing firmly until seated. Secure the bracket to the chassis. Note that some x16 PCIe slots may only support graphics cards.
  8. Airflow: Ensure adequate airflow for the installed adapter, referring to technical specifications for cooling requirements.
  9. Power On: Reinstall the computer cover, reconnect AC power, and power on the host computer. During boot, a BIOS message will appear, indicating firmware initialization and adapter controller information.
  10. Storage Profile: Choose the correct storage profile using the 12Gb/s MegaRAID Tri-Mode Software User Guide and LSI® Storage Authority Software User Guide.
  11. Driver Installation: Install the appropriate operating system drivers, which are routinely updated and available from Broadcom.

LED Designations:

  • LED2 (Yellow IOC over temperature): Stays solid to indicate the SAS3808 IOC temperature sensor is over the threshold. Turns off when the IOC is in the proper temperature range.
